May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. As such, the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) and the Student Wellness Advisory Group (SWAG) have chosen the month of May to launch their #H.E.C.K.A.well campaign. #H.E.C.K.A.well is an acronym for Helping Every Child Know Authentic Wellness and the campaign is geared towards destigmatizing the myths that pertain to mental health awareness and supports.

May 9 is an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, empowering youth and community members to make safe and healthy decisions. The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) collaborates to address the dangers of fentanyl specific to youth and works with municipalities and educational organizations to share collateral specific to campaigns aimed at youth. The SCCBOE has named student physical and mental health as a priority.
Student Impact
In 2021, 154 opioid-related overdose deaths were recorded in Santa Clara County, 31 of which were youth aged 15-24, and 11 ages 10-19. The Santa Clara County Office of Education collaborates to address the dangers of fentanyl specific to youth and works with municipalities and educational organizations to share collateral specific to campaigns aimed at youth, empowering them to make safe and healthy choices.

National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday of National School Nurse Week, which is May 6 - 12 each year. National School Nurse Day was established in 1972, with the goal of educating the public of the critical role of school nurses in the education setting.

National School Nurse Day and Week are an opportunity for youth and schools to honor the value school nurses bring to a campus. The County Superintendent of Schools and SCCBOE recognize the important contributions of nurses including ensuring the health and well-being of all students and staff in Santa Clara County schools.

The week of May 21–27, 2023 is recognized as Classified School Employee Week by the Santa Clara County Office of Education. The California Legislature has named the third full week of May as Classified School Employee Week for their contributions made to students and learning institutions.

Classified school employees are an integral part of the educational system and their impact on student outcomes is vast. Classified employees provide services that enable the SCCOE and the districts within Santa Clara County to respond effectively to the needs of students, their families, staff, and the greater community. Classified employees play a key role in creating a school environment that contributes to the whole child by promoting student achievement, wellbeing, and health. Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated during the first full week of May each year and offers the opportunity for communities to reaffirm their commitment to teacher partnerships.
