[D. Set the Agenda]
TRUSTEE MAH? I WOULD LIKE TO. SORRY, I'D LIKE TO MAKE A CHANGE.I'D LIKE TO MOVE TO CHANGE THE AGENDA.
I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE ITEMS EIGHT B AND EIGHT C TO PROCEED 8.A.
I JUST WANT TO PULL ITEM FIVE FROM THE AGENDA CONSENT CALENDAR.
CAN YOU REPEAT THE NUMBER ONE MORE TIME? 5.E FROM THE CONSENT CALENDAR.
DEWAN, IN TERMS OF THE CLOSED SESSION, WILL THE PARENTS OR THE PARTICIPANTS OF THOSE MEETINGS BE NOTIFIED, AND WILL THEY BE ABLE TO ARRIVE ANTICIPATED IN TIME FOR THOSE? SHOULD WE PROCEED? I'M CHECKING WITH OUR TEAM TO MAKE SURE SO I CAN VERIFY WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THAT.
OKAY. IS THERE A SECOND FOR THE, I GUESS, MOTION TO MOVE ITEMS B AND C. BERTA TO CONFIRM.
YES. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THE PARENTS.
OKAY. SO, I'M ASSUMING, TRUSTEE MAH, THAT WAS A MOTION FROM YOU.
YES. AND TRUSTEE LARI, YOU WERE ASKING TO ALSO PULL AN ITEM.
SO CAN I TRUSTEE MAH WOULD YOU ACCEPT THAT AS A FRIENDLY AMENDMENT TO YOUR.
OKAY. AND IS THERE A SECOND THEN FOR THE MOTION.
SO, IT'S TO MOVE ITEMS EIGHT, B AND C TO PROCEED EIGHT A AND THEN PULLING ITEM 5.E WHICH WILL BECOME 6.B.
IT'LL FOLLOW 6.B IT WILL JUST DO IT UNDER ITEM FIVE WILL JUST DO IT SEPARATELY.
OKAY. FOR DISCUSSION AND ACTION.
THANK YOU. SO IS THERE A SECOND? VICE PRESIDENT ROCHA. THANK YOU.
THANK YOU FOR THE REQUESTED AMENDMENTS OR CHANGES TO THE AGENDA.
I'M SORRY, I'M NOT GOING TO BE SUPPORTING THOSE.
I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE TIMING AND HOW LATE WE MIGHT GET TO THE EVALUATION.
AND GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE INVESTMENT OF TIME WE'VE ALREADY MADE ON IT, I PREFER NOT TO HAVE THAT ITEM LAST AND POTENTIALLY END UP BEING HEARD IN THE LATE HOUR.
[00:05:02]
SO THAT WILL BE MY VOTE.THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS.
OTHERWISE, I DO BELIEVE WE STILL NEED A SECOND.
SO, IN THAT CASE, WHICH MAKES SENSE.
BUT GIVEN YES, THAT WE DON'T WANT TO DELAY THE EVALUATION ITEM, I WOULD.
LIKE TO CONSIDER MOVING THEN? THE CLOSED SESSION ITEMS BEFORE THE INFORMATION ITEMS. SO, AMEND MY MOTION, I GUESS.
SO, IF I COULD JUST MAKE A COMMENT.
I DO BELIEVE WE HAVE STUDENT PRESENTERS HERE AS WELL FOR THE INFORMATION ITEM.
SO, I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT SUPPORT THAT MOTION.
BUT YOU'RE WELCOME TO MAKE THE CHANGE TO THE MOTION IF YOU'D LIKE TO PROCEED WITH THAT.
AND I MEAN, IT COULD GET VOTED DOWN OR NOT, BUT I'M JUST TRYING TO GIVE THE PARENTS A BREAK SO THAT WE CAN GET TO THEIR ITEM EARLIER, HOPEFULLY QUICKLY, AND THEN GIVE ENOUGH TIME FOR THE OTHER CLOSED SESSION ITEM, THE LENGTH OF TIME THAT IT NEEDS.
CAN I ASK A QUICK CLARIFYING QUESTION? DO STAFF PROVIDE KIND OF AN ANTICIPATED TIME OF FOR THE CLOSED SESSION TO BEGIN? WE DO ATTEMPT TO DO THAT.
WE ON THE EARLY SIDE JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME UNKNOWNS, BUT WE'LL, WE ATTEMPT TO DO THAT FOR IF THE BOARD DID WANT TO HEAR THE CHARTER SCHOOLS ITEM INFORMATION ITEM LATER, WE COULD DO THAT TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEEDS AND INTEREST OF THE BOARD.
I DID WANT TO AFFIRM WHAT YOU SAID.
PRESIDENT BERTA THAT FOR ITEM SEVEN A, WE DO HAVE STUDENTS PRESENT.
THEY'RE ALREADY HERE FOR THAT ITEM.
OKAY. AND TRUSTEE MAH, CAN YOU JUST CLARIFY EXACTLY WHAT YOUR MOTION IS NOW? SO, MY MOTION HAS NOT CHANGED OKAY.
SO, KEEPING B AND C BEFORE A AND YOU PULL 5.E TO TRUSTEE LARI PULLING OF ITEM 5.E.
OKAY. IS THERE A SECOND FOR THAT MOTION? OKAY. TRUSTEE CHON.
I'M NOT SECONDING. I'M JUST GOING TO MAKE IT.
OH, YOU'RE JUST MAKING A COMMENT. OKAY.
IF THERE'S NO SECOND, THEN I'M JUST GOING TO MOVE TO ADOPT THE AGENDA, TO ADOPT THE AGENDA AS SET.
I'M SORRY. TRUSTEE LARI, I MISSED WHICH ONE YOU WANTED TO PULL.
SO GIVEN THE FIRST MOTION DID NOT RECEIVE A SECOND, THERE WAS A MOTION MADE BY TRUSTEE CHON TO ADOPT THE AGENDA AND PULL ITEM FIVE E FROM CONSENT AND A SECOND BY VICE PRESIDENT ROCHA.
TRUSTEES, PLEASE VOTE IN BOARD DOCS.
THANK YOU. AND THAT MOTION PASSES.

HE IS A ROLE MODEL FOR HIS PEERS AND ACTS AS THE HEAD STUDENT IN THE CLASSROOM.
HE ADVOCATES FOR THEM AND CELEBRATES THEIR SUCCESSES.
HIS TEACHERS ALSO SHARED THAT HE IS NOW POSITIVELY RESPONSIVE TO THE WORD NO, AND WHEN HAVING A BAD DAY, MICHAEL IS NOW ABLE TO MAKE A SOCIAL COMEBACK AND RETURN TO ACTIVITIES THAT MAKE HIM HAPPY.

WE DO HAVE A COMMENT CARD FOR FIVE E.
YES, WE'LL GET TO THAT CARD RIGHT AFTER THE CONSENT.
BECAUSE THAT ITEM WAS PULLED FROM THE CONSENT CALENDAR.

PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
MY NAME IS KARINA DOMINGUEZ, AND I AM A LIFELONG RESIDENT OF THIS REGION.
IT IS REALLY CRITICAL FOR US TO WORK AS A COMMUNITY.
I AM A PRODUCT OF THE ALUM ROCK SCHOOL DISTRICT, AS WELL AS THE EAST SIDE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND RECENTLY I RECOGNIZED THAT I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN CONFRONTING ENDOMETRIOSIS FROM THE YOUNG AGE.
TODAY I COME TO SHARE WITH YOU WHAT ENDOMETRIOSIS IS.
YOU WILL FIND A LOT OF THE LANGUAGE IN THE PROCLAMATION, BUT 1 IN 10 INDIVIDUALS ARE ENCOUNTERING THIS CHALLENGE THAT UNFORTUNATELY MAKES US BAD BALANCE FOR MANY DAYS AT A TIME.
YOU HAVE A VERY CRITICAL ROLE BECAUSE YOU CAN CONNECT HEALTHCARE TO YOUR SCHOOLS.
WE DO FEEL THAT YOU PLEASE INCORPORATE THE ENDOMETRIOSIS CLEARANCE TEST WHEN CHILDREN COME TO THE NURSE'S OFFICE, BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT STOMACH PAINS OR MENSTRUAL.
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE.
IT AFFECTS BOTH WOMEN, YOUNG GIRLS AND YOUNG MEN.
TRUSTEE LARI, I'LL TURN IT OVER TO YOU.
YES. I JUST WANTED TO THANK KARINA DOMINGOS AND THE DAWN BOARD FOR THE ADVOCACY.
AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO SPOTLIGHT THESE CONDITIONS, SUCH AS ENDOMETRIOSIS, SO THAT PARENTS AND SCHOOL STAFF CAN RECOGNIZE THE FACTORS THAT MAY BE IMPEDING LEARNING AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND HELP SUPPORT THE IMPACTED STUDENTS.
OTHER COMMENTS FROM TRUSTEES? OKAY. WELL, THANK YOU, TRUSTEE LARI FOR BRINGING THIS FORWARD AS WELL AS KARINA AND THE OTHERS WHO WORKED TO HELP BRING THIS ITEM FORWARD.
IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO HELP WITH THE INTERSECTIONALITY OF, OF HEALTHCARE AND OUR SCHOOLS AS WELL.
SO, WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE THE MOTION, TRUSTEE LARI? SO MOVED.
MOTION HAS BEEN MADE BY TRUSTEE LARI AND I'LL SECOND THE MOTION.
BOARD TRUSTEES, PLEASE VOTE IN BOARD DOCS.
[00:45:11]
AND THAT MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.THANK YOU. WE WILL NOW GO TO ITEM SIX, OUR ACTION ITEMS.

BOTH OF THESE FUNDING SOURCES ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR SCC BOE PRIORITIES OF EXPANSION OF INCLUSIVE PRACTICES AND CLASSROOMS AND PROGRAMS, AND LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR HIGH NEEDS.
A MOTION HAS BEEN MADE TO APPROVE BY TRUSTEE DI SALVO.
I'LL SECOND. BUT I JUST DID HAVE ONE QUICK QUESTION.
THE REVENUE INCREASE THAT WOULD GO TOWARD TRAINING FOR ADA COMPLIANCE AND SOCIAL MEDIA.
DOES THAT MEAN ADA COMPLIANCE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS OR ARE THESE.
THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS OKAY, GREAT.
THAT'S ALL. THANK YOU, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT.

[01:00:01]
YEAH. HI.GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS LEAH PERETZ.
SO GOOD EVENING TO BOARD MEMBERS AND THE TRUSTEES.
I'VE BEEN IN THE DD PROGRAM SINCE PRE-K.
I'VE LEARNED SO MANY SKILLS THROUGH THE SCHOOL, THROUGH TEENS, TEACHERS, INTERPRETERS.
THERE'S BEEN MANY ROLE MODELS AND LEADERSHIP.
I'VE MADE MANY FRIENDS THROUGH MY YEARS IN THE DEA PROGRAM.
I'M ALSO WORKING AT VALLEY FAIR AT ONE OF THE RESTAURANTS.
I WILL BE GRADUATING THIS YEAR ON JUNE 6TH.
AND AFTER GRADUATION I WILL BE ATTENDING RIT IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
MY MAJOR WILL BE IN LAW IS LIBERAL ARTS AND PSYCHOLOGY.
I'M A PROUD MEMBER OF THE DD PROGRAM.
I'VE BEEN IN THE PROGRAM SINCE I WAS A LITTLE KID, SINCE PRE-K.
I'VE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT INDEPENDENCE, MENTAL HEALTH STRATEGIES, DEVELOPING MY COMMUNITY INSIDE THE DHHS PROGRAM. I'VE MADE LOTS OF FRIENDS AT LEE HIGH SCHOOL AND AT THE SBT PROGRAM.
CURRENTLY I'M WORKING AT GREAT AMERICA IN HERE IN CALIFORNIA.
I WILL BE GRADUATING THIS JUNE 6TH.
AFTER GRADUATION, I WILL ALSO BE ATTENDING RIT IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK IN MAJORING IN BUSINESS.
I WILL DEFINITELY MISS MY HOME AND MY FAMILY.
AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES.
OUR POST-SECONDARY STUDENTS ARE FOCUSED ON COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS.
STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKABILITY PROGRAM AS WELL AS TAKE CLASSES AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
OKAY. THE HIT NAME IS JUAN GARCIA.
TALKED TO A BUNCH OF PEOPLE, SO HE ASKED ME TO COME HERE TO TALK TO YOU.
JUAN IS THE FIRST YEAR IN MY POST-SECONDARY PROGRAM GRADUATE FROM LEE HIGH SCHOOL LAST YEAR.
THOUGH THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM IS, YOU KNOW, NATIONWIDE, 80% OF DEAF PEOPLE ARE NOT EMPLOYED.
THOUGH VERY CHALLENGING FOR DEAF PEOPLE TO FIND A JOB AFTER HIGH SCHOOL OR AFTER COLLEGE.
THOUGH I HAVE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM, AND I'M ALSO COLLABORATING WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION FOR A ONE YEAR, FIRST YEAR HERE.
I ASKED HIM, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO? WORK. WHAT DO YOU WANT? YOU WANT TO BE THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES? HE SAID NO.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? YOU WANT TO BE A MECHANIC? DO YOU WANT TO PAINT? WHAT DO YOU WANT? HE SAID, WELL, MECHANICS TO HEART, BUT MAYBE PAINT.
WELL, LUCKILY, MY OLD STUDENT, ALONZO GRADUATED FROM LEE HIGH SCHOOL 12 YEARS AGO.
JUST OPENED UP HIS OWN SHOP TWO BLOCKS FROM HESTER SCHOOL AT A WINDOW TINTING COMPANY TO MAKE THE WINDOW DARK. SO I ASKED ALONZO ALONZO, WOULD HE BE WILLING TO TRAIN ONE, YOU KNOW, TO WORK WITH YOU IN A CAR? BECAUSE ALONZO, A DEAF HEAT DEAF YOU COMMUNICATE IN AFL AND ALONZO THAT
[01:05:04]
YET? I'LL BE WILLING TO TRAIN YOU, BUT I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY YOU.WELL, ONE WANTING TO PRACTICE FOR FREE.
SO I CONTACTED THE DEPARTMENT OF REHAB AND THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD GIVE HIM 300 HOURS OF GRANT MONEY, THAT $17.50 AN HOUR, HE CAN MAKE ABOUT $5,000.
I'M JUST KIDDING. SO CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'RE WORKING AFTER SCHOOL ON MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY.
HE SAID IF YOU'RE NOT WORKING NOW, HE'D BE PLAYING VIDEO GAME THE CONGRATULATED ONE.
THANK YOU MINA, LEAH AND JUAN FOR DISCUSSING YOUR TIME IN THE PROGRAM TONIGHT.
THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TONIGHT.
WE WILL NOW ACCEPT ANY QUESTIONS OR OPEN TO ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE.
IT REALLY HELPS US GET A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THE PROGRAM IS LIKE.
BEFORE WE GO TO QUESTIONS, I THINK I'D LIKE TO GO TO PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THIS ITEM.
MODERATOR. DO WE HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THIS ITEM? YES WE DO.
WE HAVE 11 CARDS FOR COMMENT ON THIS ITEM.
PLEASE PROCEED WITH PUBLIC COMMENTS.
AS YOU HEAR YOUR NAME, PLEASE LINE UP FOR PUBLIC COMMENT.
BEHIND THE PODIUM LOCATED AT THE CENTER OF THE ROOM.
THOSE WITH ASL INTERPRETATION WILL RECEIVE THREE MINUTES.
AS SAID EARLIER, 90S FOR THE SPEAKER AND 90S FOR AN ASL INTERPRETER.
TO PREVENT SOUND DISTORTION, PLEASE KEEP THE MICROPHONE A SHORT DISTANCE FROM YOUR MOUTH.
OUR SPEAKERS ARE SARAH GENNARO CHRISTINA MOORE.
GRACIE TRINUMMUS TINA CHANG, DIANE CAPELLI.
AARON NOKES AND ED PREMO FROM YOU.
OUR FIRST SPEAKER IS SARAH JUNICHIRO.
PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PREVENT YOUR COMMENT.
SARAH JANE CARO, SEIU CHAPTER PRESIDENT WE'RE EXCITED TO CELEBRATE THE WORK THAT CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED BARGAINING UNIT MEMBERS DO IN OUR EARLY START AND DEAF HARD OF HEARING PROGRAMS. WE'RE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE WORK WE DO EVERY DAY AND WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED, BUT WE HAVE LOTS OF ROOM TO IMPROVE.
IN PARTICULAR, EQUITY MEANS ALL STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS.
OUR DEAF STUDENTS NEED ASL INTERPRETERS, AND SCC HAS BEEN SHORT STAFFED FOR DECADES BECAUSE IT'S A RARER SKILL, REQUIRES PASSING CERTIFICATION EXAMS, AND STAFF MUST CHOOSE BETWEEN POTENTIAL RETIREMENT BENEFITS OR SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER PAY RATE.
WE MUST INVEST IN INTERPRETERS AND DEVELOPING INTERPRETERS SO THAT DEAF STUDENTS AT LEE HIGH SCHOOL HAVE THE SAME ABILITY TO CHOOSE ANY ELECTIVE LANGUAGE, COURSE OR CLASS, REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEIR PEERS ALSO WANT TO TAKE.
WHY SHOULD OUR STUDENTS ONLY HAVE ACCESS TO THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE? WHY ARE THEY PREVENTED FROM TAKING OUR REQUESTED ELECTIVE? BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH INTERPRETERS AND NONE ARE TRILINGUAL.
EQUITY MEANS OUR KIWI ENROLLED STUDENTS AT ASTOR HAVE THE SAME ACCESS TO ENRICHMENT LIKE JUNIOR CHEFS, MATH, SCIENCE, AND MUSIC THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO GENERAL EDUCATION PEERS AND STUDENTS. AND INCLUSION INVESTS IN STUDENTS AND STAFF.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRISTINA MOORE.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
SHE IMPLORES MY BIGGEST QUESTION AS WE TALK ABOUT THE CLUSTER TODAY IS, ARE OUR PROGRAMS FULLY STAFFED WITH ASL INTERPRETERS, AND IF NOT, THEN WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY IS IT? THE SUPERINTENDENTS, THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS? THE PRINCIPALS? HR. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF HAVE ACCESS AND ARE SAFE IN THE CLASSROOMS? LET US NOT PAT OUR BACKS TILL WE CAN ENSURE SAFETY AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, EQUITY.
[01:10:03]
DR. DEWAN AND RESPECTED BOARD MEMBERS SAFETY, EQUITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY.OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS MICHAELA AVILA.
AND BEFORE YOU BEGIN, IF YOU JUST WANT TO GIVE OUR TIMEKEEPER ONE MOMENT TO ADJUST THE TIME.
PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
HELLO? CAN YOU HEAR ME? HEAR ME? OKAY, I'M GONNA HAVE TO MOVE.
I AM DEAF AND I AM A PARAEDUCATOR.
I AM HERE REPRESENTING THE DEAF PROGRAM AT OSTER ELEMENTARY.
AND I WAS, AND ONE OF MY PREVIOUS TEACHERS WAS ABLE TO TAKE ME ON A TRIP TO JAPAN BACK THEN.
I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM MY TEACHERS IN THE PAST WHO WERE DEAF THEMSELVES, AND THEY WERE WONDERFUL ROLE MODELS FOR ME AS A DEAF PERSON.
THEY HAVE REALLY TAUGHT ME THAT DEAF PEOPLE CAN DO ANYTHING.
AND NOW, AS A PARA, I SEE DEAF CHILDREN LOOKING UP TO ME AS THEIR ROLE MODEL AND SEE THAT DEAF PEOPLE CAN USE ASL, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO THEIR LANGUAGE.
I WORK BEHIND THE SCENES AS WELL.
AS A STUDENT AS BECAUSE I WAS A STUDENT IN THIS PROGRAM, MY GOAL IS TO MAKE THIS COMMUNITY.
THRIVE AND THE STUDENTS WITHIN IT.
THIS PROGRAM IS SO IMPORTANT FOR THESE KIDS BECAUSE IT EXPOSES THEM TO ASL AND OTHER SKILLS THAT WILL HELP THEM TO BECOME THE BEST ADULTS THEY CAN BE. THANK YOU.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS WAYNE MORGAN.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM, CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND BEGIN YOUR COMMENT.
HELLO, MY NAME IS WAYNE MORGAN.
I AM CURRENTLY AN INTERPRETER AT ĆSTRA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
BUT I WAS ORIGINALLY A PARAEDUCATOR.
I HAVE BEEN SUPPORTED AND ENCOURAGED AT DURING MY TIME IN THE PROGRAM.
I HAVE WORKED AT EVERY SINGLE SITE IN THE DHHS PROGRAM AND HAVE EXPERIENCED SO MANY THINGS.
I'VE SEEN SOME OF THESE WONDERFUL STUDENTS GROW UP AND BECOME THE PEOPLE THAT THEY WANT TO BECOME, AND THE PEOPLE I KNOW THEY CAN BECOME OSTER AND THE DHHS PROGRAM DEFINITELY HAS ROOM TO GROW, BUT THE WORK THAT IS BEING DONE RIGHT NOW BY THE STAFF WE CURRENTLY HAVE IS SO IMPORTANT AND SO VALUABLE.
AND SEEING SO MANY OF THE STAFF MEMBERS TRYING TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE AND GET TO KNOW THE STUDENTS ON A DEEPER LEVEL THAN JUST NAMES AND NUMBERS IS AMAZING.
AND I REALLY AM EXCITED AND HOPEFUL TO SEE HOW THIS PROGRAM GROWS.
THANK YOU. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS GRACIE.
TSUNAMIS. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM, CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT.
GOOD EVENING, DR. DEWAN, BOARD PRESIDENT, BERTA AND TRUSTEES.
MY NAME IS CHRISSY TSUNAMIS, AND I WOULD LIKE TO TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION ON BEHALF OF AMANDA WARREN, A PARENT FROM THE EARLY START DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM. AS A PARENT WHO KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THE DEAF COMMUNITY, I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL FOR THE SUPPORT, THE COMMUNITY, AND THE LOVE WE HAVE RECEIVED THROUGH THE DHHS PROGRAM AT CHANDLER. MY SON CODY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AUDITORY NEUROPATHY SPECTRUM DISORDER AROUND THREE MONTHS OLD DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE PANDEMIC, AUGUST 2020.
HE WOULD INTERACT WITH CODY AND EVALUATE HIM ON HIS PROGRESS WITH SPEECH AND OTHER MILESTONES.
HE INTRODUCED OUR FAMILY TO AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE, WHICH ULTIMATELY OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS TINA CHANG.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM, CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT.
[01:15:05]
OKAY. GOOD EVENING, DR.HUAN AND TRUSTEES. MY NAME IS TINA CHANG, AND I'M BACK WITH MY SON, EVAN.
I WANT TO ASK EVERYONE WHY THEY ARE HERE TONIGHT.
I WANT TO CELEBRATE THE SUCCESSES OF OUR PROGRAMS. LAST YEAR, EVAN ACHIEVED BEYOND WHAT I IMAGINED HE COULD IN SPITE OF HIS DISABILITIES.
WHEN SHE DIDN'T COME BACK THIS YEAR, I ASKED THE QUESTION, WHY? WHY WASN'T I WHERE SHE WAS A STUDENT TEACHER? WHY DID SHE LEAVE OUR PROGRAM BEFORE RECEIVING HER CREDENTIALS? WHY DID OUR PRINCIPAL SUDDENLY RESIGN? WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A CONSISTENT PRINCIPAL OVER THE PAST SEVEN YEARS? WHY WERE MY SAFETY CONCERNS DISMISSED? IN ORDER TO MAKE THINGS BETTER, WE NEED TO IDENTIFY THE CURRENT PROBLEMS. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN FIND SOLUTIONS.
AS WE LOOK AT THE PRESENTATION, PLEASE LOOK BENEATH THE SURFACE AND ASK QUESTIONS.
HOW CAN WE MAKE CLASS SIZES TEACHABLE? HOW CAN WE INVOLVE PARENTS TO IMPROVE THE PROGRAM? I HOPE THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF WHY YOU'RE HERE IS BECAUSE WE SHARE THE VISION OF A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR KIDS, INCLUDING DEAF PLUS KIDS LIKE EVAN.
WILL YOU HELP MAKE OUR FUTURES BRIGHT? SPEAKER IS DIANE CAPELLI.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM, CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
HELLO AGAIN, PRESIDENT BERTA TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENT DEWAN.
MY NAME IS DIANE CAPELLI, AND ALTHOUGH MY SON COLIN IS VISUALLY IMPAIRED AND NOT DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING, THERE ARE SIMILARITIES AND CHALLENGES THAT STUDENTS WITH LOW INCIDENCE DISABILITIES FACE FINDING QUALITY SCHOOL PROGRAMS. I JUST WANTED TO SPEAK IN SUPPORT OF MY FRIEND TINA AND HER SON EVAN AND ECHO EVERYTHING SHE HAS QUESTIONED AND STATED.
THANK YOU. OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRISTINE FINNSTROM.
HELLO, MY NAME IS CHRISTINE FINSTROM.
I AM A TEACHER AT LEE HIGH SCHOOL.
I'VE BEEN TEACHING THERE FOR 18 YEARS.
I TEACH MATH AND SCIENCE, BUT THAT'S NOT THE ONLY THING I DO AT LEE HIGH SCHOOL.
I HELP THEM DECIDE IF COLLEGE IS THE RIGHT TRACK, OR POSSIBLY A SECONDARY PROGRAM TO HELP THEM WITH BECOME ADULTS AND TO HELP THEM MOVE ON WITH LIFE.
AND THIS PARTICULAR YEAR, WE GOT A LOT OF STUDENTS WANTED TO MOVE ON INTO COLLEGE AND GO ON TO RIT.
SO I WAS ABLE TO SUPPORT THEM TO BECOME INDEPENDENT.
SOME OF THEM NEEDED MORE HELP WITH THE APPLICATION PROCESS THAN OTHERS, BUT I WAS THERE FOR THEM TO SHOW THEM AND GUIDE THEM THROUGH THE APPLICATION, TO SHOW THEM HOW TO DEVELOP A RESUME, TO REALLY ADVOCATE AND GET DOOR.
DOOR. DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION TO SUPPORT THESE STUDENTS.
SO THIS ROLE IS ACTUALLY EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
THERE'S MANY TEACHERS, MANY ADULTS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORTING.
PREVIOUSLY THERE WAS EMPLOYEES AND PREVIOUSLY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
ALL OF THE ADULTS AT LEA WOULD REALLY SUPPORT THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS IN THIS WAY.
NOW WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, TO SUPPORT THEM WITH THIS NEW CHAPTER IN THEIR LIFE.
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS DARLENE NORMAN.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
HELLO. GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS DARLENE NORMAN.
MY DAUGHTER'S DEVELOPMENT HAS ALREADY STRONGLY BENEFITED FROM HER ACCESS TO LANGUAGE.
HER DEAF BLINDNESS MAKES HER EVEN MORE UNIQUE WITH LOW VISION AND THE COMBINATION OF HEARING LOSS, AND IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO SERVE A STUDENT IN A DISTRICT PROGRAM WITH THESE UNIQUE NEEDS. AND THE ACCESS TO THESE RESOURCES IN A DEAF, HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT.
AND STATISTICALLY, 90% OF CHILDREN WHO ARE DEAF ARE BORN TO HEARING PARENTS.
AND SO WE AS A COMMUNITY, AS EDUCATORS, WE NEED TO BUILD THOSE PROGRAM SUPPORTS TO HELP OUR FAMILIES AND OUR STUDENTS REACH THEIR LIFELONG SUCCESS AND WHAT THEIR FUTURE HOLDS FOR POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS.
THANK. OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS AARON NOKES.
PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS AARON NOKES.
[01:20:09]
I STARTED WORKING FOR THE COUNTY OFFICE COUNTY OFFICE SHORTLY AFTER THEY WERE ENROLLED.THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE DEAF SERVICES THROUGH.
PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM, CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT.
I'M A TEACHER OF THE DEAF AT CHANDLER TRIP.
I'M A TEACHER OF THE DEAF AT EARLY START PROGRAM AT CHANDLER TRIP.
I SEE THEM OVERCOME THOSE FEELINGS, AND THE FEELINGS CHANGE TO A STRONG SENSE OF OPTIMISM.
THROUGH CONSISTENT HOME VISITS, ATTENDING PPC, AND CONSISTENTLY BEING ASSESSED, ALL THE FAMILIES WILL HAVE A FEELING OF ENCOURAGEMENT IN REGARDS TO EDUCATIONAL FUTURE OF THEIR CHILD. I FOCUS ON LANGUAGE STRATEGIES THAT CAN BE PRACTICED AT HOME THROUGHOUT THE FAMILY ROUTINES.
I ALSO WORK WITH THEM FOR TRANSITION.
TRANSITION CAN BE DIFFICULT, BUT AS AN EARLY START TEACHER, I HELP THEM NAVIGATE THAT PROCESS.
I LOVE WHAT I DO AND I WISH I STARTED THIS 20 YEARS AGO.
INVITATION TO COME TO CLASS OR A HOME VISIT.
I WILL MOVE ON TO QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM TRUSTEES.
AS YOU MENTIONED, THIS IS VERY VALUABLE FOR US TO HEAR.
SO YOU COMING HERE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE FOR US.
AND I WANT TO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I'M NOT SURE WHO TO PASS THIS QUESTION TO.
BUT IT'S, YOU KNOW, CAME FROM A COMMENT FROM THE PUBLIC IN TERMS OF THE ENGAGEMENT OF THE PARENTS AND THEIR EXPERIENCE IN THE PROGRAM ON BEHALF OF THEIR STUDENTS, AND I'M SORRY, THEIR CHILDREN. SO CAN YOU MAYBE SHARE WITH ME HOW YOU DO ENGAGE THE PARENTS AND THE PROGRAMS AND, YOU KNOW, POST SURVEYS, HOW THEIR EXPERIENCE BEEN FOR THE STUDENTS AND THE THEIR CHILDREN? THANK YOU. I'LL DEFER FIRST TO THE TEAM.
I THINK EACH OF THEM WILL HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD TO THAT ANSWER.
I CAN SPEAK FIRST FOR THE EARLY START PROGRAM.
IT IS A HUGE COLLABORATION WITH THE FAMILY.
IT IS A COACHING MODEL, SO EVERYTHING THAT WE DO IN THE EARLY START PROGRAM INVOLVES THE FAMILY, THE PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, ANYBODY WHO IS PRIMARY CARETAKER FOR THE STUDENT. SO THAT'S WHERE OUR FOCUS IS, IS IN THE HOME, WITH THE FAMILIES, WITH THE STUDENTS.
SO THE RELATIONSHIP THERE AND THE BUILDING AND THE TRAINING HAPPENS THERE, AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES TO COME INTO THE CLASSROOM FOR THE PARENT PARTICIPATION CLASSES WHERE THEY'RE LEARNING, PARENTS ARE LEARNING HOW TO WORK WITH THEIR STUDENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN.
AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE PARENT TRAININGS.
SO WE TALK ABOUT WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE, WHAT THAT INVOLVES, WHAT TO EXPECT, HOW TO PREPARE FOR THAT.
SO WE PROVIDE TRAININGS FOR THAT FOR PARENTS TO GET THEM INVOLVED.
WE ALSO HAVE TRAININGS MONTHLY IN OUR EARLY START PROGRAMS FOR FAMILIES AROUND DIFFERENT AREAS OF OUR EARLY START PROGRAM, THAT IT COULD BE SPECIFIC TO DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING. WHETHER IT'S DEVICES, HOW TO CARE FOR THOSE DEVICES, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO GO TO AN AUDIOLOGY APPOINTMENT.
I THINK YOU. IF YOU WANT TO, THEN I CAN ASK.
[01:25:01]
COLLABORATE. WE HAVE ELAC AND SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL.EACH SITE, OSTER, DARTMOUTH AND LEE ALSO HAVE A HOME SCHOOL CLUB.
IN ADDITION, LEE ALSO HAS A BOOSTER CLUB AND TRANSITION TRAINING FOR PARENTS.
AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE OTHER AREAS LIKE THROUGH OUR LCAP SURVEY, WHICH IS AVAILABLE TO ALL PARENTS.
AND THEN THIS IS MY SIXTH YEAR IN THIS POSITION, AND I'VE HAD INDIVIDUAL CONVERSATIONS WITH PARENTS IN THE DEAF HARD OF HEARING PROGRAM, AND WE HAVE MADE CHANGES BASED ON PARENT INPUT IN THOSE CONVERSATIONS AS WELL.
I ECHO A LOT OF WHAT MY VICE PRESIDENT ROCHA SAID AND THE SPECIALNESS OF THIS PROGRAM.
OR IS IT ARE THEY SEPARATE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CLASSES, OR IS IT BOTH? YOU WANT TO GO FIRST? SURE. I'LL START FIRST.
SO OUR BIRTH TO THREE PROGRAM IS IN-HOME FAMILY SERVICES.
AND IN THE FALL, WE ARE LOOKING AT DOING THE COMMUNITY FRIENDS PROGRAM, WHERE WE ARE ACTUALLY BRINGING PEERS INTO THE CLASSROOM FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO HAVE HEARING DIFFERENCES SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE ACCESS TO LANGUAGE MODELS AND HAVE THAT SUPPORT THAT'S ALREADY IN THEIR CLASSROOM, BECAUSE WHEN THEY GO INTO OUTSIDE CLASSROOMS, OFTEN THERE'S A LESS WAY TO PROTECT THE SOUND SOUNDS BOUNCING OFF OF WALLS, THINGS LIKE THAT. SO THEIR CLASSROOMS ARE SPECIFICALLY WE HAVE SOUND BOARDS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
I JUST WANT TO ADD SOMETHING TO THAT.
AND IF YOU DON'T MIND, TASHA, THAT WAY I WON'T PASS IT BACK AND FORTH.
BUT I'LL SPEAK FOR YOUR YOUR YOUR SITE TOO.
WE'RE VERY PURPOSEFUL THAT INCLUSION IS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR DEAF, HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS.
SO WE'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF WORK WITH OTHER DISTRICT, COUNTY AND STATE PROGRAMS AND ANY CHANGE THAT'S BEING VERY FOCUSED ON OUR STUDENTS. SO WITH OUR COMMUNITY FRIENDS MODEL, THE THE MAIN FOCUS IS THAT THOSE PEERS ARE BRINGING IN MORE LANGUAGE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO WE ALSO ARE OPENING THAT UP TO CODAS TO SIBLINGS OF DEAF CHILDREN.
SO THAT WOULD BE IN THE IN OUR LITTLE ONES CLASS.
AND THEN MOVING FORWARD THE OSTER THROUGH DARTMOUTH AND LEE THERE'S ACCESS TO PEERS, BUT THE LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR DEAF HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS IS WITH THEIR DEAF PEERS.
SO IT'S A VERY INDIVIDUALIZED DECISION.
IT REALLY IS MADE A IEP BY IEP.
AND I THINK THE BEAUTY OF THIS PROGRAM AND THE LONG HISTORY AND RECOGNITION OF THIS PROGRAM IS THAT THERE IS ACCESS TO GENERAL EDUCATION AND OPTIONS, AND THAT WE ALSO HAVE SO WE HAVE DIFFERENT WE HAVE THE ABILITY FOR STUDENTS TO BE TOGETHER WITH THEIR DEAF PEERS AND THEN ALSO OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCLUSION.
SO IT REALLY VARIES BY THE STUDENT.
AND AND THAT WOULD BE AT ALL SITES.
AND IS THAT AT LIKE MULTIPLE HIGH SCHOOLS AS WELL? I KNOW WE FOCUSED ON LEE AND DARTMOUTH.
NO, WE'RE JUST AT LEE HIGH SCHOOL.
WE DO. OUR COUNTY OFFICE PROGRAM DOES SUPPORT STUDENTS THROUGH AN ITINERANT MODEL AS WELL.
SO WE DO HAVE TWO DHHS TEACHERS THAT SERVE 98 STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.
WE ARE ONE SERVICE MODEL FOR DEAF HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS.
MANY STUDENTS ARE THRIVING IN THEIR DISTRICT PROGRAMS IN THEIR HOME SCHOOLS.
AND SO WE'RE SUPPORTING THERE.
I SHARED, HAVE OVER 200 STUDENTS ON THEIR CASELOAD THAT ARE ITINERANT AND ARE OUT IN DISTRICT PROGRAMS. WE ALSO ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN FREMONT, AND THAT IS AN OPTION THAT SOME OF OUR FAMILIES ACCESS TO IF THEY WANT REALLY AN ASL FOCUSED PROGRAM, WHEREAS WE HAVE MORE A BILINGUAL BIMODAL, WHICH IS BOTH ENGLISH AND ASL.
[01:30:06]
AND SO SEEING A PROGRAM LIKE THIS IN I WORK IN FREMONT.SO WE ARE VERY CLOSE TO THIS CALIFORNIA SCHOOL OF THE DEAF.
BUT SEEING A PROGRAM LIKE THIS IS VERY HEARTWARMING.
IT'S GREAT TO SEE OUR STUDENTS HERE.
SO THANK YOU FOR COMING TODAY AND SHARING YOUR SUCCESSES.
THAT'S, I THINK, SOMETHING THAT THIS IS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO.
SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR SUCCESSES.
AND I THINK THE MORE THAT WE CAN MAKE OUR PROGRAM GROW, THE BETTER I.
BUT I THINK THAT WE CAN DO BETTER IN STAFFING.
SO THE MORE WE CAN GROW THE PROGRAM, THE BETTER, BECAUSE I DO BELIEVE THAT ALTHOUGH THIS PROGRAM SUPPORTS OUR STUDENTS WITH THESE NEEDS, IT ALSO SUPPORTS OUR GENERAL EDUCATION STUDENTS, BECAUSE THE MORE THAT WE ARE ENGULFED INTO ONE SOCIETY, THE BETTER.
SO THANK YOU FOR THAT WORK, I APPRECIATE IT.
AND THE MORE THAT WE CAN GROW THIS PROGRAM, I THINK THE BETTER.
SO. ARE YOU GOING TO SAY SOMETHING? I JUST WANTED TO SHARE, TOO, THAT THE MANY DISTRICTS HAVE THEIR OWN TEACHERS ON STAFF THAT PROVIDE SERVICES TO THEIR STUDENTS.
THE SOUTHEAST KALPA, FOR INSTANCE.
THEY EMPLOY THEIR OWN ITINERANT TEACHERS.
SO THERE WE ARE NOT THE ONLY PROVIDER FOR THE ITINERANT SERVICES.
SO I THINK THAT THAT IS GOOD TO KNOW AS WELL THAT THERE WERE ONE OPTION.
BUT MANY DISTRICTS HAVE THEIR OWN EMPLOYEES THAT ARE DOING THAT WORK.
SO I WILL JUST ECHO THOSE COMMENTS AND I GUESS TO FOLLOW UP ACTUALLY ON ONE OF THOSE AREAS.
CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE COUNTY OFFICE'S EFFORTS TO ATTRACT AND RETAIN QUALIFIED ASL INTERPRETERS SPECIFICALLY? YES, THAT IS SUCH A HUGE ISSUE.
AND I WOULD SAY THAT IT'S BOTH AT INTERPRETERS AND ALSO ASL PARAEDUCATORS THAT WE ARE CONSTANTLY ONGOING RECRUITMENT AND THEY ARE VERY HIGHLY SPECIALIZED POSITIONS.
AND THEY'RE, THEY ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.
THIS IS HAS BEEN A HUGE AREA OF FOCUS FOR ME IN MY ROLE.
WE ARE WE ARE VERY BUSY CREATING PARTNERSHIPS AND NETWORKS.
WE ARE WE PARTICIPATE AS ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM WITH CAL ED, WHICH IS I'M TERRIBLE AT REMEMBERING THE ACRONYM, BUT THAT IS THE ASSOCIATION FOR DEAF EDUCATION FOR CALIFORNIA.
AND SO WE'RE IN A SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP THERE, WHICH IS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, WHICH IS EVERYONE IS FOCUSED ON HOW CAN WE INCREASE THE NUMBER OF HIGHLY QUALIFIED INTERPRETERS IN ASL PARIS? BECAUSE THE ISSUE, I DON'T THINK HAS BEEN SO MUCH AS TRYING TO RECRUIT, BUT THAT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE WITH THAT CERTIFICATION.
WE ARE WE ARE CONSTANTLY, CONSISTENTLY TRYING TO PULL, YOU KNOW, STAFF PULL POTENTIAL STAFF FROM THEIR THEIR INTERPRETER PREP PROGRAM PLACES STUDENTS WITH US FOR THEIR INTERPRETER PREP LAST YEAR FOR INTERNS.
SO WE TRY TO DO OUR BEST TO MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION.
AND THE THE ONE THING THAT I, YOU KNOW, REALLY FEEL PROUD OF FOR THE COUNTY OFFICE IS IN PREVIOUSLY, THE PARAEDUCATOR POSITIONS IN THE DHHS PROGRAM WERE HAD THE PREFERENCE FOR ASL SKILLS.
AND IN 2021, WE CHANGED THAT POSITION TO SAY IT IS NOW AN ASL PARA REQUIRED. WE HAD 17 OF OUR CURRENT PARAS THAT WERE ABLE TO PASS THE TEST TO BECOME TO HAVE THAT CERTIFICATION.
IN 22, 23, WE, WE HIRED FOUR MORE STAFF WITH THAT CERTIFICATION.
THIS SCHOOL YEAR, 2324, WE HAVE HIRED AN ADDITIONAL FOUR STAFF.
[01:35:11]
SO OR OF HANDS.SO THIS IS A REALLY INCREDIBLE TEAM.
AND I THINK THAT THE NETWORKING IS WHAT IS INCREASING OUR CAPACITY.
WE ALSO HAVE WEEKLY SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR ALL STAFF.
THOSE ARE ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS.
THEY ARE FREE AND THEY ARE LED BY A DEAF A DEAF TEACHER.
AND IT'S WE'RE STARTING TO SEE LIKE MORE INTEREST IN ASL.
SO WE'RE WE ARE ALSO REALIZING THE POTENTIAL FOR US TO GROW OUR OWN WITHIN OUR PROGRAM.
I KNOW IT'S A LONG ANSWER, BUT I HAVE TO SAY I'M SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS.
I'LL COME TO YOU IN JUST A SECOND.
I THINK IT IT HAS TO BE A PRIORITY.
AND IT CERTAINLY ALIGNS WITH THE BOARD'S PRIORITIES TOO, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO EQUITY.
AND I, I WANT THAT TO CONTINUE TO GROW IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, OUR STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO CHOOSE WHATEVER ELECTIVES OR COURSES THAT THEY WANT TO TAKE, NOT DEPENDENT ON WHETHER WE HAVE THE STAFFING TO PROVIDE THE INTERPRETATION.
SO I HOPE THAT WE CAN WORK TOWARDS THAT.
AND SO IF THERE'S THINGS THAT WE CAN DO TO TO HELP SUPPORT THAT EFFORT PLEASE DO, DO LET US KNOW.
TRUSTEE MAH. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT BERTA.
I GUESS MY QUESTION, JUST TO KIND OF THROW IT OUT THERE IS FOR OUR ASL INTERPRETERS AND PARAEDUCATORS ARE OUR SALARIES COMPETITIVE WITH ALL THE DISTRICT? DISSIMILAR CLASSIFICATIONS.
NO, I WOULD HAVE TO GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THAT FULL INFORMATION.
I KNOW OUR INTERPRETERS THAT ARE HERE, STAYING HERE, BUT I THINK I WILL SAY THAT WE ARE VERY CLOSE TO SEVERAL INTERPRETERS AND I THERE IS THERE IS A LOT OF WORK AVAILABLE FOR AN INTERPRETER AND A LOT OF CHOICE IN THEIR WORK AND A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY.
SO AN INTERPRETER HAS THE ABILITY TO WORK FROM HOME OR WORK FROM ANYWHERE OVER, AROUND THE WORLD.
AND WE ALSO SEE THAT IN SOME OF OUR OTHER AREAS.
THAT AND I WOULD LIKE SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS ARE IN A SIMILAR SITUATION.
BUT IN TERMS OF THE EXACT PAY COMPETITIVE I DON'T HAVE THAT INFORMATION RIGHT OFF HAND.
THANK YOU. ONE OF THE OTHER QUESTIONS I HAD WAS ABOUT LANGUAGE ACCESS ACROSS THE GRADE LEVELS.
CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE, YOU KNOW, SPECIFICALLY WITH WITH THE EARLY START PROGRAM, BUT ALSO AS THAT THE THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM, HOW DOES THAT CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE GRADE LEVELS? SURE. SO WHEN WE START WITH EARLY START THE EARLY START PROGRAM FROM BIRTH TO THREE STARTING FROM BIRTH, VISUAL LANGUAGE, THE SMILE, THE EYEBROW RAISE, EVERYTHING IS SO IMPORTANT WITH VISUAL LANGUAGE AS WELL AS SPOKEN LANGUAGE.
THEY'RE IT'S ENGLISH AND ASL FOR OUR PRESCHOOL PROGRAM.
AND SO WE'RE CONTINUING TO MONITOR THEIR LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN THAT PROGRAM AS WELL.
AND FOLLOWING WHAT THEIR, WHAT THEIR MODE OF COMMUNICATION, THEIR PRIMARY MODE OF COMMUNICATION AND JUST REALLY BUILDING OFF OF THAT, BUT GIVING THEM ACCESS TO BOTH THE VISUAL AND SPOKEN LANGUAGE.
DOES OUR INTERPRETER NEED A BREAK HERE? SWITCH OUT. WRITE IT DOWN.
YEAH, I JUST THE INTERPRETER WANTS TO CONFIRM.
[01:40:02]
BECAUSE I KNOW THEY WERE HERE AND THEY WANTED TO TELL A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THEIR ACCESS AS THEY AS THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAM, WE DO HAVE ASL AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT OUR CLASSES AND THROUGHOUT THE GRADE SPAN.MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE INTERPRETERS IS SPANISH FOR TWO YEARS.
SO THE INTERPRETERS THAT WE'VE HAD HAVE NOT NECESSARILY BEEN CERTIFIED FOR SPANISH INTERPRETING.
I FEEL THAT IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE INTERPRETERS.
I THINK ALL INTERPRETERS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO SPANISH INTERPRETERS THAT CAN HELP THEM.
I KNOW THE FIRST YEAR IT WAS REALLY HARD FOR ME AND I STRUGGLED WITH ENGLISH AND ASL AND SPANISH, AND I JUST CONTINUED TO STRUGGLE MYSELF TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT THE COMMUNICATION THAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM.
AND IT WAS NOT FAIR FOR ME, NOR FOR THE INTERPRETERS.
SO THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I FOUGHT FOR AND I COMPLAINED ABOUT.
I'M STRUGGLING TO PUT MY THOUGHTS TOGETHER CLEARLY.
SO ONE TIME IN ENGLISH CLASS, AN INTERPRETER CAME IN AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS HAPPENING.
THEY WERE NOT OUR REGULAR INTERPRETER.
SO WHEN AN INTERPRETER'S COME IN, THEY NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE CURRICULUM.
NOT SOME RANDOM INFORMATION IF IT'S DURING A PRESENTATION.
SO THEN I'M MISSING IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
THEY NEED TO KNOW THE INFORMATION.
SO TO ADD TO THAT, THIS IS LEAH.
I WANT TO THANK ALL THE INTERPRETERS WHO WORK REALLY HARD.
BECAUSE MOST OF US STRUGGLE AND YOU HELP THE INTERPRETERS HELP US TO BECOME SELF ADVOCATES.
I'VE NOTICED THAT INTERPRETERS NEED MORE STAFF.
AND I CAN SEE THAT THEY'RE ALONE AND THEY'RE STRUGGLING TO SUPPORT US.
SUPPORTERS ARE REALLY MY MAIN ACCESS FOR BOTH OF US.
AND SO I WISH BECAUSE I'M MOTIVATED, I WANT TO LEARN.
I'M IN THE MAINSTREAM, INCLUSIVE.
SO THE INTERPRETERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE ACCESS TO WHAT THE TEACHERS HAVE.
ESPECIALLY FOR ANY AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES OR BEFORE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR THE INTERPRETERS TO MAINTAIN THEIR HEALTH AND TO CONTINUE TO SHOW UP.
THE INTERPRETERS HAVE REALLY HELPED ME AS A BENEFIT.
IN CLASSES IN DIGITAL EDUCATION, SPECIFICALLY MATH.
SO IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US.
YEAH. SO THE INTERPRETERS ARE REALLY A BENEFIT TO US AT THE SCHOOL.
[01:45:02]
STAFFING, BECAUSE WE DO WANT OUR STUDENTS TO HAVE WHAT THEY NEED.AND OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF HAVE BEEN, I THINK AND PARENTS HAVE BEEN THE THE MOST CRUCIAL IN EDUCATING ME IN MY ROLE IN HOW THIS IS A CRITICAL NEED.
AND THANK YOU FOR THAT ODD SEGUE TO OUR OUR STUDENTS.
AND I KNOW OUR INTERPRETER IS TIRED.
CAN I ADD A COMMENT? GOOD. MY SECOND CONCERN ABOUT DEAF EDUCATION.
SO WHEN WE'RE IN MAINSTREAM OR THE GENERAL ED CLASSES, THE INCLUSIVE CLASSES.
WE'RE AT. WE'RE AT GRADE LEVEL WITH OUR PEERS, BUT WE MAY NOT BE AT GRADE LEVEL ACADEMICALLY.
WE SHOULD NOT BE AT THIRD GRADE LEVEL AT HIGH SCHOOL.
I'M GETTING READY TO GO TO COLLEGE AND I'LL BE OUT IN THE WORLD.
I WANT TO SEE US HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO IMPROVE FROM THE BOTTOM LEVEL.
THOSE OF US, THOSE OF THE STUDENTS THAT ARE STRUGGLING THE MOST.
I DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY YEARS OF EDUCATION AT THE SAME THIRD GRADE LEVEL.
SO WE NEED TO CHERISH CHILDREN'S EDUCATION.
I JUST WANT TO JUST GENUINELY.
AN AUTHENTICALLY IN THROUGH THE.
MY HEART. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SELF ADVOCACY.
IT IS SO INSPIRING TO SEE YOU ADVOCATE IN WAYS.
AND I'M SITTING HERE SAYING, WHAT CAN I DO AS A TRUSTEE? I THINK HAVING A.
HAVING THIS DELIVERED TO THE CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE ABOUT OUR EXCESS PROPERTY TAXES THAT THEY KEEP THAT ARE BELONG TO US, BELONG TO THE CHILDREN AND PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTY.
LET'S PUT A CLIP TOGETHER AND SEND IT TO THOSE WHO ARE BALKING AT US GETTING THAT MONEY BACK TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIVES OF THESE VERY WORTHY AND RICH STUDENTS.
AND I AND I HOPE OUR BUDGET CYCLE INCLUDES AREAS WHERE WE'RE ADDING TO THE POT TO IMPROVE THE DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION TO THESE BRILLIANT CHILDREN.
THANK YOU. WELL, I'VE GOT A NUMBER OF OTHER QUESTIONS, BUT I THINK IN THE INTEREST OF SUPPORTING OUR INTERPRETERS TOO, I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH STAFF AND WE CAN CONTINUE TO SEE HOW WE CAN SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND OUR EDUCATORS WHO ARE DOING THIS IMPORTANT WORK.
I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND BEING HERE THIS EVENING.
RIGHT. SO WE WILL NOW GO ON TO ITEM SEVEN B.
[B. Charter Schools Update]
WHERE WAS THAT? I DON'T KNOW.YES. SO I ALSO WANT TO JUST THANK ALL OF THE PANELISTS WHO PRESENTED ON THAT LAST REPORT.
THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE THIS EVENING AND FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERTISE WITH US.
AND TO ALL THE PUBLIC COMMENTERS AS WELL.
OUR NEXT ITEM IS OUR CHARTER SCHOOLS UPDATE.
[01:50:05]
GOOD EVENING. PRESIDENT BERTA TRUSTEE.TONIGHT I HAVE TWO ITEMS FOR YOU.
FIRST, DOWNTOWN COLLEGE PREP CHARTER SCHOOLS.
DEPARTMENT STAFF WILL MEET WITH DOWNTOWN COLLEGE PREP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER PETE SETTELMEYER AND HIS TEAM ON MARCH 27TH TO DISCUSS THE NEXT STEPS FOR DCP ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL, CAMPUS CLOSURE AND LOGISTICS RELATED TO THE SCHOOL'S FORTHCOMING REQUEST FOR MATERIAL REVISION TO ITS CHARTER.
BOE APRIL 17TH APRIL 17TH MEETING AGENDA.
SECOND CHARTER SCHOOLS PERFORMANCE CATEGORY DATA ON MARCH 12TH, 2020 FOR THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RELEASED THE 2024 CHARTER SCHOOL PERFORMANCE CATEGORY DATA FILE.
THIS FILE IS A LIST OF CHARTER SCHOOLS AND THEIR RESPECTIVE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES, WHICH ARE BASED ON THE SCHOOLS PERFORMANCE ON THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD PURSUANT TO EDUCATION CODE SECTION 47 607 C, THE PERFORMANCE CATEGORY OF A CHARTER SCHOOL IS ONE OF THE CRITERION.
ONE OF THE CRITERION CHARTER SCHOOLS.
CHARTERING AUTHORITIES MUST CONSIDER WHEN DETERMINING WHETHER TO APPROVE A CHARTER RENEWAL.
CHARTER SCHOOLS IN EACH OF THE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES MAY BE RENEWED AS FOLLOWS A CHARTER SCHOOL IN THE HIGH PERFORMING CATEGORY THAT MEETS ALL REQUIRED RENEWAL CRITERIA AND IS ELIGIBLE.
IS ELIGIBLE FOR A FIVE, SIX, OR SEVEN IS A SORRY IF THEY MEET ALL THE RENEWAL CRITERIA THEY ARE PRESUMPTIVE RENEWAL AND THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR FIVE, 6 OR 7 YEAR RENEWAL TERMS BASED ON THE DISCRETION OF THE.
BOARD AUTHORIZING BOARD, A CHARTER SCHOOL IN THE MIDDLE PERFORMING CATEGORY WILL BE EVALUATED USING ADDITIONAL VERIFIED DATA, AND MAY BE RENEWED FOR A TERM OF FIVE YEARS. A CHARTER SCHOOL IN THE LOW PERFORMING CATEGORY IS A PRESUMPTIVE NON-RENEWAL, UNLESS IT IS TAKING MEANINGFUL, MEANINGFUL STEPS TO ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF LOW PERFORMANCE, AS DOCUMENTED IN A WRITTEN PLAN ADOPTED BY THE SCHOOL'S GOVERNING BOARD, AND THERE IS CLEAR AND CONVINCING EVIDENCE THE SCHOOL HAS ACHIEVED A MEASURABLE INCREASE IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AS DEFINED BY AT LEAST ONE YEAR'S PROGRESS FOR EACH YEAR IN SCHOOL, OR THE SCHOOL HAS DEMONSTRATED STRONG POST-SECONDARY OUTCOMES SUCH AS COLLEGE ENROLLMENT, COLLEGE PERSISTENCE, AND COLLEGE COMPLETION RATES EQUAL TO SIMILAR PEERS.
IN SUMMARY, A CHARTER SCHOOL IN THE LOW PERFORMING CATEGORY MUST HAVE A WRITTEN PLAN TO ADDRESS THE CAUSES OF LOW PERFORMANCE AND EITHER CLEAR EVIDENCE OF MEASURABLE ACHIEVEMENT OR STRONG POST-SECONDARY OUTCOMES TO BE RENEWED TO BE RENEWED FOR A TWO YEAR TERM.
ALPHA JOSE HERNANDEZ IS IN THE LOW PERFORMING CATEGORY.
THE THREE ROCKETSHIP SCHOOLS ROCKETSHIP ALMA, ROCKETSHIP BRILLIANT MINDS AND ROCKETSHIP SI SE PUEDE ARE MIDDLE PERFORMING ARE IN THE MIDDLE PERFORMING CATEGORY, AND BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL IS IN THE HIGH PERFORMING CATEGORY.
AND THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT FOR THE EVENING.
THANK YOU. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FAIRLEY TRUSTEE MAH.
I HAVE ONE QUESTION ON ON WHAT YOU WERE SAYING EARLIER ABOUT THE LOW PERFORMING SCHOOLS.
HOW DOES AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHOW PROGRESS CLEAR AND CONVINCING EVIDENCE ABOUT, YOU KNOW, POST-SECONDARY OUTCOMES? YEAH, AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WOULD HAVE TO USE VERIFIED DATA.
AND I'VE REPORTED TO YOU BEFORE ON VERIFIED DATA.
IT IS A IT VERIFIED DATA CAN COME FROM ASSESSMENTS, LOCAL ASSESSMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND ADOPTED BY THE SCHOOL TO SHOW PROGRESS FOR THE SCHOOL STUDENTS.
SO THAT WOULD BE LIKE NAEP OR NO, LIKE THE NWEA MAP TEST OR I DON'T KNOW IF ASSOCIATE CURRICULUM
[01:55:01]
CURRICULUM ASSOCIATES IS ONE OF THEM, BUT IT'S A VENDOR, YOU KNOW, VARIOUS VENDORS.VARIOUS VENDORS CREATE ASSESSMENTS THAT SCHOOLS CAN USE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO FIND OUT HOW THEIR KIDS ARE DOING, THEIR FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS THAT ARE STATE APPROVED. YES.
OKAY. SO THEY HAVE TO BE STATE APPROVED.
THEN ONE OF THE OTHER ITEMS ON ONE OF THE SLIDES, WHICH DIDN'T COME UP BASIS FOR NON DENIAL ON NONACADEMIC GROUNDS SLIDE FIVE, IF YOU WANT TO BRING IT UP IT SAYS THE CHARTERING AUTHORITY MAY DENY RENEWAL OF A CHARTER SCHOOL IN ANY OF THE THREE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES UPON FINDING THE SCHOOL IS DEMONSTRABLY UNLIKELY TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM SET FORTH IN THE PETITION DUE TO AND THESE ARE NONACADEMIC GROUNDS DUE TO SUBSTANTIAL FINANCIAL, FISCAL OR GOVERNANCE DIFFICULTIES.
AND THE SECOND ITEM NOT SERVING ALL PUPILS WISHING TO ATTEND.
ARE WE GOING TO SURVEY ALL THE STUDENTS OR NO? HOW DO WE. SO WE ACTUALLY HAVE A CHARTER SCHOOL THAT WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH ON THIS AROUND THIS VERY TOPIC.
SO THE SCHOOL HAS TO SCHOOL CHARTER SCHOOLS SHOULD HAVE DEMOGRAPHICS IN THEIR STUDENT POPULATION THAT ARE REFLECTIVE OF THE STUDENT POPULATION, DEMOGRAPHICS IN THE JURISDICTION OR THE DISTRICT THAT THEY RESIDE IN.
AND SO ONE OF OUR CHARTER SCHOOLS, BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL DOES NOT HAVE CURRENTLY A DEMOGRAPHIC THAT IS REFLECTIVE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
AND SO THAT THAT IS WHAT THIS BULLET IS REFERRING TO.
SO. THAT IS AN INTERPRETATION OR IS THAT THE THE LEGAL DEFINITION? BECAUSE NOT SERVING ALL PUPILS WISHING TO ATTEND DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THE DEMOGRAPHICS HAVE TO EXACTLY MATCH, OR AT LEAST NO, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO MATCH.
AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH LEGAL COUNSEL ON THIS.
SO YEAH, I DON'T THINK IT'S AN INTERPRETATION.
WELL, I GUESS IT IS AN INTERPRETATION, BUT THAT IS IS HOW WE LOOK AT IT.
THERE'S NO SURVEY. IS THERE ANY LEGAL PRECEDENTS YET ON, ON THIS PARTICULAR ITEM? I'M SORRY. CAN YOU IS THERE ANY LEGAL PRECEDENTS OR CASE CASE LAW ON THIS.
SO THIS IS NEW AS OF 2020, RIGHT.
RIGHT. BUT IT HASN'T BEEN ACTUALLY TESTED.
SO THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTIONS AND THE THE THE UPDATE.
ARE THERE OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? PRESIDENT BERTA. WE ALSO HAVE COMMENT CARD.
OKAY. PLEASE PROCEED WITH PUBLIC COMMENT.

OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRISTINA MOORE.
PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT.
HI, I'M CHRISTINA MOORE, A TEACHER FOR THE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION, AND I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE D+ STUDENTS THAT WE HAVE.
WHEN WE LOOK AT VALUATION, WE NEED TO LOOK AT HOW ALL STUDENTS ARE BEING SERVED.
AND I DIDN'T HEAR TOO MUCH MENTION OF THE D+ COMMUNITY.
AND I HAVE SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE THAT THOSE PARTICULAR STUDENTS ARE NOT GETTING THE SAME RESOURCES AND THE SAME IMPORTANCE FOR ROBUST LANGUAGE SYSTEM OF LANGUAGE IS NOT GIVEN AND THEIR NEEDS ARE NOT BEING MET.
SO I JUST WANTED TO I'M TOTALLY OFF THE CUFF HERE AS WE WERE HEARING THE PRESENTATION.
THAT JUST REALLY MADE ME SAD BECAUSE THERE'S THINGS NEEDS OF THE DEAF COMMUNITY THAT AS A TEACHER WHO'S HAD STUDENTS IN MY CLASS, AS MEMBERS OF THE DEAF COMMUNITY THAT I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF, AND I THINK OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS DANA BENNETT.

I HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT MY HIGH REGARD FOR DR.
DEWAN BEFORE, AND I HAVE HIGH REGARD FOR ALL OF YOU, THE TRUSTEES.
YOU'RE AMAZING. AND THOSE OF YOU WHO I'VE WORKED WITH OVER THE YEARS, FOR SOME YEARS, AND OTHERS OF YOU, I HAVE BEEN REALLY IMPRESSED WITH HOW YOU'VE HANDLED SOME REALLY TOUGH ISSUES AT THESE MEETINGS.
AND I THINK YOU CARE ABOUT THE SAME STUFF THE KIDS EQUITY KINDNESS.
AND I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY WE CAN'T GET TO A RESOLUTION OF THIS.
I'M WONDERING IF YOU'RE ENTERING INTO THE CONVERSATION WITH EFFORT TO BUILD TRUST.
I'M WONDERING IF YOU'RE ENTERING INTO THE CONVERSATION WITH CURIOSITY, BELIEVING IN POSITIVE INTENT OF THE OTHER PEOPLE AT THE TABLE AND WITH GOOD, YOU KNOW, POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS.
THAT'S WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO TONIGHT.
WE NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE.

SARAH JANEIRO, SEIU CHAPTER PRESIDENT.
SOME OF YOU WERE HERE WHEN I BECAME PRESIDENT IN 2020.
[02:05:01]
EDUCATORS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC BECAUSE THEY FELT THEY WEREN'T NEEDED WHILE OUR STUDENTS WERE ON DISTANCE LEARNING.SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, WE RETURNED TO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION.
AND GUESS WHAT? THOSE FOLKS CHOSE NOT TO COME BACK.
THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END WHEN IT COMES TO OUR STAFFING.
AS FAR AS OUR ASL INTERPRETERS GO, YOU JUST HEARD FROM THE STUDENTS TWO YEARS OF SPANISH.
THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM, AND IT'S A SYMPTOM OF THE FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION WIDE.
WE NEED MEASURABLE GOALS AND OUTCOMES FOR SAFETY, EQUITY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
THANK YOU. THE BOARD WILL NOW ENTER CLOSED SESSION.
WE WILL RETURN IN APPROXIMATELY 3.5 HOURS ON OR AFTER.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE'S PATIENCE.
I KNOW IT'S BEEN A LONG EVENING.

[A. The members of the Board may give reports on any activities related to their duties as members of the Santa Clara County Board of Education]
IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE BROWN ACT, INFORMATION SHARED DURING COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBER REPORTS MUST ONLY INCLUDE THOSE ACTIVITIES SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO OUR DUTIES AS TRUSTEES OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION.NOW, WOULD ANY TRUSTEE WISH TO PROVIDE A REPORT ON ACTIVITIES SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO THEIR DUTIES AS MEMBERS OF, AND WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION? TRUSTEE MAH.
I ATTENDED TODAY THE CSBA LEGAL SERVICES LUNCH AND LEARN PROGRAM, WHICH IS OPEN TO ALL BOARD MEMBERS AND COUNTY OFFICES WHO ARE CLIENTS OF THE LEGAL SERVICES, WHICH WE ARE.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY HAS AN ATTENDANCE COLLABORATIVE, WHICH IS SPONSORED BY THE COUNTY OFFICE OF ED AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, AND IT WAS REALLY FASCINATING TO LEARN ABOUT ALL THE RESOURCES.
THERE'S TONS OF RESOURCES FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS ON HOW TO HANDLE ATTENDANCE AND TRUANCY AND AND HOW ALL OF THOSE KINDS OF THINGS ARE KIND OF OVERWHELMING, CERTAINLY FOR SOMEONE WHO'S NOT WELL VERSED.
THERE'S MEMBERS IN THIS COLLABORATIVE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTY, ALL THESE DIFFERENT DISTRICTS.
SO THAT WAS JUST MY SUGGESTION TO MAYBE REARRANGE THEIR VERY, VERY DENSE AND PLENTIFUL WEBSITE TO KIND OF HIGHLIGHT MAYBE SOME OF THE MOST COMMONLY USED BEST PRACTICES.
EXCUSE ME, AT THE BUDGET STUDY SESSION I ATTENDED, ALONG WITH DR.
DEWAN, THE YMCA PROJECT, CORNERSTONE ACID CHAMPIONSHIP BREAKFAST.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE ALPHA PUBLIC SCHOOLS STARS OF TOMORROW ALUMNI CELEBRATION, ALONG WITH DIRECTOR FAIRLEY AND I ALSO ATTENDED THE SECOND HARVEST OF SILICON VALLEY'S LEGISLATIVE GATHERING, WHICH WAS VERY INTERESTING JUST TO HEAR ALL THE THINGS THAT SECOND HARVEST IS DOING LEGISLATIVELY.
LAST TWO THINGS. AS I ATTENDED THE CCPA LEGISLATIVE BRUNCH BY OUR LOCAL CHAPTER AND IN FINAL, I ATTENDED A ROCKETSHIP FELLOWSHIP PANEL WITH TRUSTEE DI SALVO.
I APPRECIATE APPRECIATED THE VERY INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING PRESENTATION.
AND RAMADAN, THE HOLY MONTH FOR MUSLIMS, BEGAN ON MARCH 12TH, AND I HAVE ATTENDED A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY OF TOWERS OR BREAKING OF THE FAST, INCLUDING ONE IN MILPITAS, WHERE THERE WAS A PRESENTATION ON THE POWERFUL WOMEN OF ISLAM IN ITS EARLY DAYS, LIKE 1400 YEARS AGO AND AN INTERFAITH IFTAR WHERE THERE WAS A YOUTH PANEL PRESENTATION BY THE AMERICAN MUSLIM VOICE FOUNDATION AT THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF PALO ALTO.
THEY FOUND THAT THE STUDENTS HAD TROUBLE LEARNING, BUT WERE ABLE TO MAKE SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS WHEN THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOCUSED ON PROVIDING NUTRITIOUS MEALS, AND ALSO TODAY'S INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS PROCLAIMED BY THE UN, RECOGNIZING THE RELEVANCE OF HAPPINESS AND WELL-BEING AS UNIVERSAL GOALS.
AND I WILL READ THROUGH REALLY QUICKLY MY REPORT.
I ATTENDED A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AND TOUR OF A NEW LOCATION WITH A MUCH LARGER BUILDING AND CAPACITY FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD MARMONTE IN MY TRUSTEE AREA OFF OF TULLY ROAD.
I ALSO MET WITH SOME LEADERS OF BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL, AND ALSO ATTENDED A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY IFTARS TO MARK THE MONTH OF RAMADAN, AND FEATURED ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS AND PERFORMANCES FROM STUDENTS.
[02:15:04]
