SO I AM I AM DELIGHTED THAT THEY'VE SELECTED ME TO GIVE THIS AWARD.

KIND OF A TYPECAST THING, BECAUSE AS I TALKED TO YOU BRIEFLY BEFORE I WAS, I STARTED MY CAREER, MY CAREER.

AT 23 YEARS OLD, GLENN HOFFMAN WAS SUPERINTENDENT OF THE COUNTY OFFICE.

HE INTERVIEWED ME AND SAID, I WANT TO HIRE YOU.

OKAY. THANK YOU.

WHERE AM I GOING TO WORK? HE SAID, WE GOT A PLACE FOR YOU AT OSBORNE SCHOOL.

AND I SAID, OH, AND THAT WAS THE SCHOOL AT JUVENILE HALL, AND THAT'S WHERE I STARTED MY TEACHING CAREER, AND I'M DELIGHTED TO COME BACK AS I END MY CAREER ON THE COUNTY BOARD AFTER NEARLY 16 YEARS.

THIS HAS THIS PLACE HAS BEEN MY LIFE, AND TO COME BACK AND GIVE AN AWARD TO OUR STUDENT OF THE YEAR IS IS AN HONOR.

SO THANK YOU. SO LET ME READ.

EACH YEAR WE TAKE TIME TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE STUDENTS WHO EXCEL, AND YOU ARE A STUDENT.

YOU WERE OUR BOARD STUDENT, RIGHT? YES, SIR, AND [INAUDIBLE] I'VE BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH THE STUDENTS THAT WE'VE WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO HAVE AS OUR BOARD MEMBER, STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS, AND NATHAN WAS ONE OF THOSE.

SO EACH YEAR, WE TAKE TIME TO HONOR AND CELEBRATE STUDENTS WHO EXCEL, OFTEN OVERCOMING SIGNIFICANT OBSTACLES TO REACH THEIR PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC GOALS, AND THOSE WERE THINGS NATHAN I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH.

I DIDN'T HAVE THOSE OBSTACLES, AND YOU'RE GOING TO ACHIEVE IT WITH THOSE OBSTACLES.

THE SAME THINGS THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE AND PEOPLE THAT HAVE SAT ON THIS BOARD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE, LIKE PETER ORTIZ, YOU KNOW, PETER ORTIZ.

HE WAS INVOLVED IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.

HE TALKS ABOUT THAT A LOT, AND HE WAS ELECTED TO CITY COUNCIL A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, AND I JUST HAD OMAR TORRES ALSO GREW UP IN DOWNTOWN SAN JOSE FIRST LANGUAGE SPANISH, AND HE WAS RECENTLY ELECTED TO THE SAN JOSE CITY COUNCIL.

SO I'M SAYING THAT.

YOU COULD GET ELECTED TO THE SENATE.

YOU'VE ALREADY BEEN STUDENT BOARD MEMBER, SO WHY NOT STEP IT UP AND BE A MEMBER OF SAN JOSE CITY COUNCIL? I'LL HELP YOU WIN WIN THE ELECTION SO SPECIFICALLY, WE WANT OUR STUDENTS FOR THEIR ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT AND ACHIEVEMENTS, THEIR LEADERSHIP SKILLS, GOOD ATTENDANCE, GOOD CITIZENSHIP AND CHARACTER, COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND PERSEVERANCE IN PURSUING THEIR STUDIES AND GOALS.

MAYBE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES.

TONIGHT, WE ARE PLEASED TO HONOR A STUDENT WHO EMBODIES ALL OF THESE ADMIRABLE QUALITIES.

NATHAN WAS A SPRING GRADUATE OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM AND IS BEING RECOGNIZED FOR HIS PERSEVERANCE, ADVOCACY, AND DEDICATION TO OTHERS.

NATHAN IS WELL ACCOMPLISHED, IS A WELL ACCOMPLISHED YOUNG PERSON IN THE COMMUNITY.

HE ADVOCATED FOR YOUTH WITHIN THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY WHILE SERVING AS THE 2023-24 SANTA CLARA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER UNTIL THIS PAST JANUARY, AND BY PARTICIPATING IN THE YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL AT HIS HIGH SCHOOL.

PRIOR TO GRADUATING, HE PROVIDED GUIDANCE TO HIS CLASSMATES BY WELCOMING NEW STUDENTS, TUTORING, MENTORING, AND LEADING SCHOOL EVENTS.

MARK CAMILLERI, THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SOUTH COUNTY ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM, SAID I HAVE OBSERVED NATHAN PROMOTE INCLUSIVITY WITHIN THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

ONE TEACHER EXPRESSED HIS LEADERSHIP SKILLS HAVE GROWN SINCE HE CAME TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL, NOT ONLY IN HIS CAPACITY AS A BOARD MEMBER AND YAC MEMBER, BUT HE IS A LEADER IN HIS POD.

FOR YAC HE HAS PRESENTED AT STAFF WORKSHOPS ON EMPATHY, BUILDING EQUITY VERSUS EQUALITY, AND PUSHBACK VERSUS ADVOCACY. I LIKE THAT ONE.

WE ALWAYS HAVE TO SOMETIMES PUSH BACK, BUT ADVOCATE FOR WHAT IS WRONG AND SO MANY INJUSTICES IN THE WORLD, AND WE HAVE TO BE THE ONES TO SPEAK ABOUT THOSE. ALL OF US.

NATHAN'S LEADERSHIP AND ADVOCACY, WHICH HE HAS USED TO PUSH FOR A MORE HUMANE AND EFFECTIVE JUVENILE JUSTICE JUSTICE SYSTEM, WILL CERTAINLY HELP HIM IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS. WE KNOW THAT NATHAN HAS A BRIGHT AND SUCCESSFUL FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM.

NATHAN HAS BEEN AN EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT WHO HAS SHOWN HIS LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN VARIOUS ROLES WHILE AT THE BLUE RIDGE.

AS A MEMBER OF THE YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL, HE HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY AND POSITIVELY TO BETTER SUPPORT THE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY AS WELL AS ELEVATE THE VOICES OF YOUTH.

BIG THING WE FOCUS ON AT THE RANCH IS USING YOUR OWN VOICE, AND THAT IS SOMETHING HE DOES ON A DAILY BASIS WHILE HE WAS THERE.

HE IS AN AMBASSADOR.

HE IS AN A MENTOR.

HE HELPED TUTOR STUDENTS IN SCHOOL AS WELL AS HOW TO SELF-ADVOCATE, WHICH WAS AWESOME TO SEE, AND HE HAS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

ONE OF OUR PROBATION MANAGERS IS RIGHT HERE, MR. UTSEY. SO THEY WOULD ACTUALLY GO SEE HIM AND ASK HIM, YOU KNOW, CAN WE CHANGE SOME OF THE FOOD? CAN WE CHANGE THE GYM? CAN WE DO THIS OR THAT? AND GUESS WHAT'S HAPPENED? WE HAVE A BRAND NEW GYM AND THEY HAVE DIFFERENT NUTRITION FOOD ITEMS THAT THEY CAN DO DUE TO THE FACT OF THEIR ADVOCACY.

SO THANK YOU FOR THAT [APPLAUSE].

YOU HAVE CONSISTENTLY GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND IMPRESSING US WITH ALL YOUR INSIGHTFUL QUESTIONS AND INNOVATIVE IDEAS.

IT'S BEEN INCREDIBLE, INCREDIBLE TO ME AND TO OUR STAFF TO WITNESS YOU GROW AS A LEADER DURING THE TIME HERE AT BLUE RIDGE.

YOU HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT AND HAVE NO DOUBT THAT YOUR FUTURE WILL BE FILLED WITH GREATER ACHIEVEMENTS.

NATHAN, A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID ABOUT YOU THAT I HAVE KEPT IN MY MIND, AND I WANT TO PUT IT OUT THERE FOR EVERYBODY TO HEAR, IS FIRST, I'M IMPRESSED BY HOW CONSISTENT NATHAN GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND IN HIS ASSIGNMENT.

HIS HARD WORK IS TRULY ADMIRABLE.

ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER SAID HE HAS NOT ONLY EXCELLING ACADEMICALLY, BUT ALSO DEMONSTRATING GREAT LEADERSHIP QUALITIES.

CLASSMATES LOOK UP TO HIM AS A ROLE MODEL.

NOW, NATHAN, THIS IS FROM ME.

YOU'RE NOT JUST SUCCEEDING ACADEMICALLY.

YOU ALSO DEMONSTRATE IMPORTANT VALUES LIKE INTEGRITY AND EMPATHY, AND AS YOUR PRINCIPAL AT BLUE RIDGE, I AM PROUD TO HAVE YOU AS A STUDENT, AND I DO MISS OUR CONVERSATIONS.

AS HE GRADUATES FROM BLUE RIDGE, WHICH HE RECENTLY JUST DID, WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT NATHAN WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE POSITIVE IMPACT AND HARD WORK TO PURSUE HIS GOALS.

PRINCIPALS TEND TO HAVE THOSE THOUGHT PROCESSES WHEN KIDS GRADUATE, AND I HAVE TO LET YOU KNOW, I'M VERY THANKFUL TO HAVE MET NATHAN.

I HOPE I'VE AND THE STAFF HAS SUPPORTED HIM TO GROW, BUT I FEEL LIKE STUDENTS LIKE NATHAN HAS HELPED ME GROW AS A PRINCIPAL AS WELL, AS WELL AS SOME OF MY STAFF.

IN AUGUST OF 2023, I HAD ZERO CREDITS, SO I WOULD NEVER SEE MYSELF HERE.

I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SEE MYSELF HERE.

SO FIRST OF ALL, I'M JUST VERY PROUD OF MYSELF.

FIRST OF ALL, FOR PUTTING A LOT OF WORK AND EFFORT.

YOU KNOW, I KNOW I DESERVED IT AT THE END.

YOU KNOW, I WENT THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS, AND I HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE IN MY SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT HELPED ME.

SO I JUST WANT TO APPRECIATE THEM AND THANK THEM AND EVERYBODY THAT'S ON THE BOARD.

EACH CABIN LEADER CAN HAVE 20 OR MORE CAMPERS THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DURING THE WEEK, INCLUDING AT NIGHT.

WALDEN WEST RELIES ON VOLUNTEERS TO ENSURE A SMOOTH AND SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM.

MARIE BOBIAS, PROGRAM DIRECTOR, DESCRIBES EMMA AS SOMEONE WHO CONSISTENTLY DISPLAYS INITIATIVE, BRINGS A JOYFUL SPIRIT TO CHALLENGING SITUATIONS, AND DOESN'T HESITATE TO LEAD BY EXAMPLE.

EMMA LIVES THE SCCOE VALUES OF STUDENTS FIRST, COLLABORATION AND SERVICE BY ENSURING THE SUCCESS OF EACH STUDENT VISITING WALDEN WEST.

SHE IS A TREMENDOUS RESOURCE TO THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS BY VOLUNTEERING WHEN ALS SERVICES ARE NEEDED.

SHE HAS SOUGHT TO VOLUNTEER DURING THE WEEKS WHEN STUDENTS MAY NEED ASL SORRY SERVICES, AND TAKES TIME OUT OF HER BUSY HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULE TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A POSITIVE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE SCIENCE CAMP EXPERIENCE.

SHE HAS SUPPORTED WALDEN WEST FOUR TIMES THIS YEAR AND CONTINUES TO GROW EACH TIME SHE RETURNS.

EMMA HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS AN AMAZING PERSON.

I'M SORRY, I'M PRETTY SURE I MISSED I MISSPOKE THERE, BUT IT WAS THREE TIMES BETWEEN LAST SCHOOL YEAR, AND NOW SHE'LL BE RETURNING TO VOLUNTEER WITH US NEXT WEEK.

SO SHE'S ACTUALLY REPORTING TO CAMP ON SUNDAY.

WITHIN MINUTES OF KNOWING THAT WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO NOMINATE ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS AWARD, EMMA'S NAME WAS ONE OF THE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO COME TO MIND.

WE'RE ALWAYS TELLING OUR VOLUNTEERS THAT WE CAN'T RUN CAMP WITHOUT THE EFFORTS OF OUR VOLUNTEERS, AND EMMA IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THAT SENTIMENT.

WITH EMMA, IT'S ABOUT THE ACTIONS THAT SHE PROBABLY THINKS GO UNNOTICED, OR THAT EVEN SHE IS AWARE OF.

OUR FIELD INSTRUCTORS HAVE SEEN HER GO OUT OF HER WAY TO ENGAGE WITH THE STUDENTS THAT JUST DON'T SEEM ENGAGED, AND BRING THEM IN TO MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR COMMUNITY. OR SHE WILL PUT HERSELF IN BETWEEN TWO STUDENTS WHO SEEM MORE FOCUSED ON SOCIALIZING WITH EACH OTHER IN AN EFFORT TO BRING THEIR FOCUS BACK TO FIELD CLASS.

SHE ASSISTS OUR FIELD INSTRUCTORS IN ENGAGING STUDENTS IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND PUTS AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF EFFORT IN GETTING TO KNOW HER CAMPERS FOR THE WEEK.

ABOVE ALL, ROSE OR EMMA COMES TO CAMP EVERY WEEK WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

SHE LEADS BY EXAMPLE WITH HER I BELIEVE WITHIN YOU ENTHUSIASM, AND REMINDS US THAT WE ARE ALL HERE FOR THE KIDS TO PROVIDE THEM WITH AN AMAZING, TRANSFORMATIONAL SCIENCE CAMP EXPERIENCE.

SHE ALWAYS DOES AN OUTSTANDING JOB AT CAMP AND IS A STRONG ROLE MODEL FOR THE STUDENTS AND HER FELLOW VOLUNTEERS.

THANKS TO THE ASSISTANCE OF MISS [INAUDIBLE] LARI AND PROBATION STAFF MEMBERS MISS LAW AND MISS [INAUDIBLE].

ALSO AT BLUE RIDGE, THE [INAUDIBLE] TRACE PROGRAM FINISHED ANOTHER COHORT AT THE END OF MARCH.

EIGHT STUDENTS AT BLUE RIDGE COMPLETED THE PROGRAM AND WERE ABLE TO EARN THEIR CPR, FIRST AID, OSHA TEN AND MC THREE CERTIFICATIONS, AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS.

A SPECIAL PROJECT THAT STUDENTS HAVE BEEN WORKING ON WAS FIRE SUPPRESSION NEAR THE WELDING CLASSROOM.

STUDENTS HAD TO FIRST REMOVE DIRT AND WEEDS IN ORDER TO PUT DECORATIVE CONCRETE TO MITIGATE FIRE HAZARDS.

THROUGH THIS PROJECT, THE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING ALL ASPECTS OF INSTALLING ADA COMPLIANT CONCRETE WALKING PATHS, FROM FORMING AND DEMOLITION, TO ESTIMATING THE AMOUNT OF CONCRETE NEEDED TO LEARNING HOW TO CREATE [INAUDIBLE] TO DIRECT WATER RUNOFF TO ADVANCE SAND POUR.

THE PROCOMP. THE PROCOM ATHLETIC LEAGUE HAS REACHED A FINAL WEEK OF BASKETBALL.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WILL BE HELD TOMORROW WITH [INAUDIBLE] JOB CORPS VERSUS MOUNT MCDONOUGH AT WILLARD GYM AND GILROY.

THIS PAST TUESDAY WERE THE SEMIFINALS FINALS, WITH SOUTH COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOL PUTTING UP A GREAT FIGHT AGAINST [INAUDIBLE] JOB CORPS.

I WANT TO THANK OUR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, DR.

SCHIFF, FOR HER SUPPORT AND BEING IN ATTENDANCE.

OSBORN STUDENTS TOOK PART IN A NATIONAL PROGRAM THAT TEACHES STUDENTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAN WATER, AIR AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

RETIRED SANTA CLARA COUNTY JUSTICE JEFF WONG INTRODUCED THE PROGRAM TO OUR PRINCIPAL.

THE PROGRAM TRIAL IN THE CLASSROOM OFFERED OUR STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO CARE FOR TRIAL EGGS, WATCH THEM DEVELOP AND HATCH, AND THEN RELEASE THEM IN THE WILD.

OUR TEACHER, MISS HERNANDEZ, WAS TRAINED ON HOW TO CARE FOR THE FISH AND RECEIVED A CERTIFICATE FROM THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, GIVING HER PERMISSION TO KEEP THE TROUT EGGS.

OUR STUDENTS SET UP A TEN GALLON FISH TANK WITH A COOLING UNIT AND INSULATION, AND KEPT THE TANK AT 55 DEGREES TO KEEP THE FISH COMFORTABLE AND SAFE. LAST WEEK, WE GAVE OUR EGGS TO MR. SANTILLAN AND THE [INAUDIBLE] COMMUNITY SCHOOL STUDENTS TO RELEASE THE BABY TROUT ALONGSIDE TROUT AND SANDY WOOL LAKE.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION FOR PROVIDING THIS GREAT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR US, THE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.

THE COUNTY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR STUDENTS, AND THEY ARE GETTING TAXPAYER DOLLARS TO PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES, AND THEY SHOULD CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES FOR OUR STUDENTS.

ABSENTEEISM WAS GIVEN AS A RATIONALE FOR THE BILL HOWEVER, DURING THE PANDEMIC, WHICH THE FACT SHEET STATES IN 21-22, MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAD ABSENTEEISM.

IN FACT, THE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION OF SANTA CLARA WAS CLOSED A FULL YEAR AFTER MOST SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY, AS WELL AS OTHER COES WERE OPEN.

THROUGH SANTA CLARA COUNTY SCHOOLS, AND THEN LASTLY, THERE WAS $268,000 FOR A CAL FIRE DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND FIRE PROTECTION GREEN SCHOOLYARD PLANNING GRANT THAT WE PLAN TO MAKE SOME IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR SOUTH COUNTY ANNEX SITE BY ADDING SOME GARDENS TO ASSIST WITH THE HEATING ELEMENT THERE, AND ALSO ALSO AT OUR CENTRAL SITE. I GO TO SCHOOL TO HEAR HOW EVERYONE'S ATTENDING COLLEGE COURSES, INTERNSHIPS, AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS WHEN I'VE GOT NOTHING.

THAT'S THE MINDSET THAT COUNTLESS HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOLERS THAT I KNOW BOTTLE INSIDE OF THEMSELVES, AND THAT'S THE MINDSET THAT DETERIORATED MY MENTAL HEALTH, DRIVING ME TO PARTICIPATE IN SWAG.

I WANTED TO BRING AWARENESS TO THE FACT THAT MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES AMONG YOUTH ARE WIDESPREAD, AND THAT EVERY STUDENT SHOULD HAVE A SPACE TO DISCUSS THE TOPIC MORE OPENLY, WITHOUT STIGMA OR JUDGMENT.

MY EXPERIENCE IN SWAG HAS SUPPORTED THESE INITIATIVES.

WE HAVE HELPED ADVOCATE FOR THE DESTIGMATIZE DE STIGMATIZATION OF WELLNESS CENTERS SO STUDENTS CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE VISITING THEM, EVEN WHEN NOTHING'S WRONG, AS A PROACTIVE, DE-STRESSING MEASURE.

SWAG ALSO PROVIDED FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS SCHOOLS REGARDING THEIR EXPERIENCES IN A MENTAL HEALTH VIDEO CAMPAIGN.

THROUGH THESE VIDEOS, WE HELPED TO NORMALIZE THE TOPIC OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SPOTLIGHT SPECIFIC ANECDOTES FROM DIVERSE STUDENTS.

AS A MEMBER OF SWAG, I WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO REDUCE THE STIGMA SURROUNDING YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH.

WE WILL MAKE TOOLKITS THAT SCHOOLS CAN UTILIZE TO MAKE VIDEOS SIMILAR TO OUR SWAG VIDEOS THAT EMPHASIZE STUDENT VOICES TO NORMALIZE MENTAL HEALTH DISCUSSIONS.

STUDENTS HAVE THE RIGHT TO FEEL AS COMFORTABLE AS THEY WOULD FEEL TALKING ABOUT THEIR PHYSICAL HEALTH WHEN DISCUSSING THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, ESPECIALLY IN THIS DAY AND AGE WHEN ACADEMIC PRESSURES ARE AS HIGH AS THEY HAVE EVER BEEN BEFORE.

THESE TRAININGS HELP TEACHERS UNDERSTAND HOW TO TEACH THE FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH LITERACY SUCH AS PHONICS, ROOT WORD ANALYSIS, DICTION, AND SENTENCE STRUCTURE. SANTA CLARA COUNTY COLLABORATES WITH SILICON VALLEY READS TO SUPPORT LITERACY THROUGHOUT THE REGION.

THIS COLLABORATION INCLUDES PROVIDING EDUCATOR TOOLKITS FOR THE SELECTED THEME, STUDENT POSTER CONTESTS, AND OTHER INCENTIVES TO ENCOURAGE READING.

THE BOARD ADOPTED FOCUS AREAS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE LITERACY.

SCCOE IS WORKING WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS ON THEIR SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY PLANS, WITH A FOCUS ON THE FOUR C'S CAMPUS COMMUNITY, CURRICULUM AND CULTURE.

WE ARE CURRENTLY PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO DISTRICTS BY PARTICIPATING IN AND CO FACILITATING THEIR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE HEARINGS.

THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ASSOCIATION GRANT PROVIDES THREE YEARS OF FUNDING FOR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND STUDENT OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES FOR K-12 TEACHERS. THE FOCUS OF THE WORKSHOPS AND AND TRAINING IS ON MEANINGFUL WATERSHED EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES WHERE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS GET OUTDOOR LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING.

NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY SUPPORT.

THE FINAL GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO CO-CREATE ACTION PROJECTS ON THEIR SCHOOL CAMPUSES OR IN THEIR COMMUNITY, TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR LOCAL WATERSHED. THANK YOU, MR. WU. SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION HELD ITS ANNUAL STEP INTO AN EDUCATION CAREER EVENT ON FEBRUARY 10TH.

OVER 136 PARTICIPANTS BENEFITED FROM BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THEM IN THEIR ENTRY INTO AN EDUCATION FIELD.

THIS EVENT IS DESIGNED TO ATTRACT DIVERSITY WITHIN THE WORKFORCE.

PARTICIPANTS OF ALL AGES AND WALKS OF LIFE LEARN ABOUT A VARIETY OF CAREERS AND EDUCATION, INCLUDING TEACHING, MENTAL HEALTH AND EARLY LEARNING.

THE CALIFORNIA PRE-KINDERGARTEN PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION GRANT PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES EARLY LEARNING APPRENTICESHIPS, WAS ESTABLISHED AS A STATE INITIATIVE TO EXPAND ACCESS TO CLASSROOM BASED PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAMS AT LEAS AND PLAN FOR INCREASED NUMBER OF TEACHERS NEEDED TO FULLY IMPLEMENT UNIVERSAL PRE-KINDERGARTEN.

THERE IS ALSO A PATHWAY FOR PEOPLE CHOOSING TO ENTER THE EDUCATION FIELD, WITH A SPECIALTY IN MENTAL HEALTH AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH.

PARTICIPANTS IN THESE PROGRAMS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED THROUGH COOPERATING AGENCIES SUCH AS SAN JOSE STATE OR GRANT PROGRAMS. SOME OF THE ONGOING PROJECTS THAT WERE IMPLEMENTING ARE DESCRIBED IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PACKET SHARED WITH YOU TONIGHT.

THIS FLYERS WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE OPPORTUNITIES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.

THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION HAS PARTNERED WITH NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY, SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY, AND TEACHERS COLLEGE OF SAN JOAQUIN TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS IN PURSUING A CAREER IN TEACHING THAT MEET THEIR CURRENT NEEDS.

WE HAVE STUDENTS CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR WHO HAVE RECENTLY COMPLETED PROGRAMS IN THE EDUCATOR PREPARATION WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS PROGRAM. ONE OF OUR STUDENT SPEAKERS TONIGHT IS A CURRENT SCCOE EMPLOYEE, AND TWO CURRENTLY WORK IN TWO OF OUR LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

I WISH TO PRESENT OUR EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM STUDENTS HERE TONIGHT.

I HAVE BEEN CONSISTENTLY SUPPORTED AND INFORMED OF THE NUMEROUS RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO ME AS AN EDUCATOR AND PROGRESS THROUGH MY ADVISOR, ADRIA KALMAR.

THIS GRANT FUNDING HAS OPENED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ME AND MANY OTHERS TO FURTHER OUR EDUCATION AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN DIFFICULT WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT. I'M A PART I WAS RECENTLY ENROLLED IN THE EPIC PROGRAM FOR THE MILD MODERATE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND I DEFINITELY WANT TO GO OVER SOME POINTS HOW THIS PROGRAM HAS AFFECTED ME. SO FIRST OFF AS FAR AS SUPPORT FROM THE TEAM, IT WAS A VERY EASY ENROLLMENT ENROLLMENT PROCESS FOR ME WITH MY COUNSELOR ADRIA KALMAR, WHO WAS NOTHING BUT YOU KNOW, VERY HELPFUL TO ME IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING ENROLLED AND UNDERSTANDING HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS AND THE TRAJECTORY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BECOME A TEACHER, AND THE EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD SO FAR IN CLASSES HAS BEEN, YOU KNOW, VERY GOOD.

ALL THE PROFESSORS ARE HAVE, YOU KNOW, TONS OF EXPERIENCE AND ARE ABLE TO EDUCATE US AND INSTILL IN US THEIR IDEALS AND WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED THROUGHOUT THEIR THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS.

AND IT'S BEEN VERY, A VERY SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THAT.

I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD BE SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO WHO ARE DOING THINGS THAT I PLAN ON DOING.

SO IT'S BEEN VERY EYE OPENING FOR ME, AND AS FAR AS THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT THE PROGRAM GIVES, THEY'RE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE MAJORITY, IF NOT ALL, WITH A GOLDEN STATE SCHOLARSHIP, WHICH DEFINITELY AIDS IN TAKING SOME OF THE FINANCIAL BURDEN OFF OF CONTINUING, YOU KNOW, ONE'S EDUCATION, AND IT DEFINITELY HELPS, I THINK IN GENERAL HELPS WITH EQUITY TOR ALL YOU KNOW, FINANCIAL BURDEN CAN DEFINITELY AFFECT YOUR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, AND WITH THAT BARRIER OUT OF THE WAY, I DEFINITELY FEEL LIKE I CAN BE 100% FOCUSED ON MY STUDIES.

SO THAT'S BEEN GREAT, AND AS FAR AS SOME FUTURE PLANS I HAVE FOR MYSELF, LIKE I SAID, I'M GOING TO BE A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER WHEREVER THAT MAY BE, WHETHER IT BE PRESCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL.

I PLAN ON DOING THAT FOR SOME YEARS, GETTING SOME EXPERIENCE AND TRYING SOME ADMINISTRATIVE WORK, BUT YEAH, THAT'S BEEN MY EXPERIENCE, YOU KNOW, THANK YOU FOR OPPORTUNITY TO BE AN EDUCATOR.

HI, MY NAME IS ERMA [INAUDIBLE].

I STARTED THE EPIC PROGRAM IN 2019 AND GRADUATED IN 21.

RIGHT NOW I AM A RESOURCE TEACHER IN THE FRANKLIN MCKINLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

I'VE BEEN WORKING THERE FOR TWO YEARS.

I WAS IN THE CAMPBELL SCHOOL DISTRICT EARLIER AS A SDC TEACHER, AND ALL THIS HAS BEEN POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF THE EPIC PROGRAM.

THE TEACHER WE WERE WE STARTED DURING THE IN 2019, 2019, BUT COVID CAME AND THEN WE HAD TO GO INTO ONLINE CLASSES, BUT STILL, THE HELP THAT WE GOT FROM THE TEACHER, FROM THE COUNSELORS AND THE EDUCATORS, IT WAS REALLY VERY VALUABLE, AND THE BEST PART WAS THAT THEY WERE TEACHERS THEMSELVES.

SO IT WAS VERY PRACTICAL, AND IT HELPED HER, HELPED US LEARN A LOT MORE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE FROM THEM RATHER THAN JUST BOOK KNOWLEDGE, AND THAT REALLY HELPED ME BE WHO I AM RIGHT NOW, AND I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED, AND THE ADD ONE [INAUDIBLE] I WAS I WAS ABLE TO AVAIL THAT GRANT, WHICH WAS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT HELPED ME HELPED REDUCE THE FINANCIAL BURDEN, AND I AM A SINGLE MOM, SO IT REALLY HELPED ME

I WAS WONDERING THE FIRST COHORT, HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THAT COHORT? YOU KNOW, I THINK AND I DO REMEMBER THAT THERE WERE FIVE STUDENTS IN THE BEGINNING APPRENTICESHIP COHORT AND UPON PARTNERING, WE'RE GROWING THAT, BUT WE DID HAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT TO BEGIN WITH.

THE FIVE WERE REALLY, REALLY STRONG, AND OUR GOAL IS TO BE ABLE TO PLACE IN OUR PROGRAMS AND THEN PROMOTE WITHIN OUR PROGRAMS. RIGHT. ALSO ON THAT SAME SLIDE, YOU MENTIONED THAT EARLY LEARNING CENTER AT RITTER PARK IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

WE CAN SEE IT WITH THE BUILDING.

WHEN IS THE PLAN COMPLETION? THE PLAN COMPLETION IS IN FALL, SO I THINK THE WORK SHOULD BE DONE WE'RE PROJECTING POSSIBLY BY MAY/JUNE TIME PERIOD.

THEN IT HAS TO GO THROUGH THE LICENSING PROCESS FOR OPENING IN FALL.

FINALLY, WE CONTACTED OUR ATTORNEYS THE SAME DAY THE TEACHER WAS INTERVIEWED, AND IN ORDER TO BE USED AS EVIDENCE AND QUICKLY ESCORTED TO HIS CLASSROOM TO GATHER HIS BELONGINGS, AND HE WAS IMMEDIATELY PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE AND TOLD NOT TO COMMUNICATE WITH ANY MEMBERS OF THE ACE COMMUNITY.

TONIGHT, THE SCCBOE WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROVISIONS OF THE CHARTER PETITION TO CONSIDER THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT FOR THE PETITION BY THE SCHOOL'S EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS.

ALUM ROCK CHARTER IS SEEKING A MATERIAL REVISION TO REMOVE GRADES 9 THROUGH 12 FROM ITS CHARTER AND TO CONTINUE OPERATING GRADES 6 THROUGH 8 ONLY AS A SINGLE CAMPUS ON ONLY A SINGLE CAMPUS CAMPUS.

DCP HAS STARTED THE REQUESTED MATERIAL REVISION.

SORRY. DCP HAS STATED THE REQUESTED MATERIAL REVISION TO CHANGE THE GRADE LEVELS SERVED AT ALUM ROCK CHARTER SCHOOL IS DRIVEN BY SIGNIFICANT DECLINING ENROLLMENT.

DCP STATES THE SCHOOL HAS EXPERIENCED A 30% DECREASE IN ENROLLMENT OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, CAUSING PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE OPERATIONS, SUSTAINABILITY, AND ABILITY TO DELIVER AN APPROPRIATE EDUCATION TO THE ALUM ROCK CHARTER SCHOOL STUDENTS.

IT STARTED AS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL AND CONTINUED TO GROW.

I'M NOT GOING TO GO OVER THE INFORMATION THAT EXECUTIVE FAIRLEY ALREADY PRESENTED, BUT WE WERE AUTHORIZED IN 2010 BY THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION, AND WE CAN MOVE ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE. SO UNLIKE OR LIKE MOST DISTRICTS AND MOST SCHOOLS IN THE AREA, WE ARE EXPERIENCING AN ENROLLMENT DECREASE, PARTICULARLY IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL AT ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE INDEPENDENCE CAMPUS ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE CAMPUS, IF YOU'RE FAMILIAR. AND WHAT I'VE SHARED WITH YOU IS IN 2019-2020, WE HAD A TOTAL NUMBER OF 291 STUDENTS.

CURRENTLY, TO DATE, WE HAVE ABOUT 203 STUDENTS, AND THAT WAS A DECREASE OF 30%.

WHICH IMPACTS THE RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

NEXT SLIDE. OUR FEEDER PATTERN AUTOMATICALLY WAS ALUM ROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND SO YOU CAN SEE THAT IN 2021, WE HAD 138 8TH GRADERS AND 96 OF THEM MATRICULATED TO THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND AS WE'VE GONE YEAR AFTER YEAR, OUR 8TH GRADE CLASS HAS GOTTEN SMALLER, AND AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS MATRICULATING TO ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL, AND SO THAT HAS HAS REDUCED BY ABOUT 26%.

NEXT SLIDE. WHEN WE LOOKED AT THIS DECISION, ONE OF THE THINGS WE TOOK INTO CONSIDERATION WAS THE BUDGET.

WE HAVE AS AN ORGANIZATION GONE THROUGH LAYOFFS THIS YEAR.

WE'VE LAID OFF ABOUT TEN STAFF.

WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON REDUCING OUR CENTRAL OFFICE AND REALLY DECENTRALIZING, DECENTRALIZING DECISIONS AND DECENTRALIZING THE CENTRAL OFFICE WORK.

SO WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED ON OUR THREE SCHOOLS, OUR THREE REMAINING SCHOOLS, AND HOW WE CENTER, KIND OF AS YOU WOULD WITH STUDENTS, WRAP AROUND SUPPORTS FOR SCHOOLS, AND SO ALL OF OUR WORK RIGHT NOW IS KIND OF, AGAIN, DECENTRALIZING THE CENTRAL OFFICE, AND I THINK REALLY GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS OF DOWNTOWN COLLEGE PREP, WHAT MADE DOWNTOWN COLLEGE PREP SPECIAL WAS A SMALL, FOCUSED COMMUNITY SCHOOL.

YOU KNOW, NUMBERS ARE NUMBERS.

IF I LOOKED AT THE $1.3 MILLION DEFICIT THAT WE WOULD HAVE GOING INTO NEXT YEAR IF WE MAINTAINED THE SCHOOL AND KEPT THE SCHOOL OPEN ON AVERAGE, OUR SALARIES.

ON AVERAGE, OUR SALARIES ARE ABOUT $124,000.

SO IF WE LOOKED AT OUR STAFFING COSTS WE WOULD HAVE TO CUT 11 STAFF.

WE'VE CUT OPERATIONS TO THE BONE.

WE'VE CUT OUR ADMINISTRATION, AND THEN WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT OUR STUDENT BODY, RIGHT, AND THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENT BODY.

BECAUSE I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HIGH SCHOOLS REQUIRE ARE MORE SERVICES RATHER THAN LESS SERVICES, AND THOSE SERVICES ARE NOT JUST ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE A THROUGH G READINESS, BUT IT'S ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO COLLEGE.

IT'S ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, AND SO WHEN WE LOOKED AT THOSE 11 POSITIONS TO CUT, WHAT DO YOU CUT THAT DOESN'T IMPACT OUR FREE AND REDUCED STUDENTS, OUR NEURODIVERSE STUDENTS, OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDENTS, OUR NEWCOMERS, AND SO THOSE DECISIONS WERE THE REASONS WHY WE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT WE COULD NO LONGER SERVE AND SERVE THE STUDENTS IN THE RIGHT MANNER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, FROM GRADES 9 THROUGH 12.

WE CAN SKIP TO TWO SLIDES.

SO THAT LEADS US TO WHAT WE DID WITH OUR COMMUNITY.

THE FIRST THING THAT WE DID WAS WE TALKED WITH THE ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL STAFF ON JANUARY 31ST, FOLLOWED BY AN EMAIL TO OUR FAMILIES, COMMUNICATING TO THEM THE RECOMMENDATION TO CLOSE THE SCHOOL OR TO REDUCE THE GRADES SERVED.

WE HAD A FAMILY COMMUNITY MEETING THAT WAS HELD AT ALUM ROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL, ATTENDED BY APPROXIMATELY 100 FAMILIES AND STUDENTS, AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE STUDENTS ADVOCATING FOR THEIR SCHOOL AND THEIR COMMUNITY, AS THEY SHOULD.

WE HAD ANOTHER FAMILY MEETING AT ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL DURING A CAFECITO, AND WE TALKED TO OUR PARENTS ABOUT IF THIS WAS THE ULTIMATE DECISION BY THE ABF BOARD WAS, WHAT DO YOU NEED IN SUPPORT? WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO MAKE SURE STUDENTS HAVE WHAT THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL, EITHER IN TRANSITIONING TO ANOTHER HIGH

SCHOOL OR TRANSITIONING TO EL PRIMERO HIGH SCHOOL WITH DCP.

A LOT OF OUR COMMUNICATION, A LOT OF OUR FOCUS AND FEEDBACK FROM THESE FAMILIES WAS AROUND STUDENTS, AS WELL IT SHOULD BE.

THINKING ABOUT WHAT WOULD THEY NEED TO DO TO MAKE DECISIONS IF THEY WERE NOT GRADUATING FROM DCP? BUT WHAT SUPPORT WOULD THEY NEED TO DO TO MAKE DECISIONS? DO THEY NEED TRANSPORTATION? WHAT SUPPORTS DO PARENTS NEED? AND THEN ADDITIONALLY, WHAT SUPPORTS DO STAFF NEED.

SO IMMEDIATELY WE PUT SOME THINGS INTO ACTION.

NEXT SLIDE. WE HAD A FAMILY NIGHT AT ALUM ROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 13TH, AND OUR PRINCIPAL FROM EL PRIMERO HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDED, AND THEN WE ALSO HELD A CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL, OPEN HOUSE, ON MARCH 6TH.

AND INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, OUR PARTNERS AT EAST SIDE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THAT BECAUSE WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS HAD OPTIONS.

SO IT WAS NOT ONLY THE CHARTER SCHOOLS IN THE AREA, BUT IT WAS THE TRADITIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE AREA AS WELL.

WE'VE WORKED WITH OUR FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE AND JUNIOR STUDENTS TO REALLY KIND OF PLACE THEM.

SO ALMOST LIKE A COLLEGE PLACEMENT, IF YOU WILL, AND WORKING WITH THEM ON LOOKING AT THEIR TRANSCRIPTS, AND HOW WOULD THEIR TRANSCRIPTS MOVE FROM ONE HIGH SCHOOL TO THE NEXT AND WHAT THEY NEEDED TO BE AWARE OF? AND SO THAT WAS DONE WITH ALL OF OUR WITH ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.

WE'VE OFFERED A SCHOLARSHIP TO BOTH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOL.

SO WE HAVE FIVE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT GO TO ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL AND FIVE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT GO TO EL PRIMERO HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE OFFERING THAT OPPORTUNITY TO THE JUNIOR CLASS ORF THOSE WHO ARE ATTENDING EL PRIMERO HIGH SCHOOL.

SO THOSE WHO ARE MOVING FROM ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL TO EL PRIMERO HIGH SCHOOL, BECAUSE WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO ACCESS THAT AS WELL.

IT'S OUR STAFF, AND SO WE HAD TO ASK OURSELVES, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO FOR THEM AS WELL, AND SO ANY STAFF MEMBER AT ALUM ROCK HIGH SCHOOL WAS ALLOWED TO MOVE INTO OPEN POSITIONS AT ANY OF THE OTHER THREE SITES.

WE ALSO HEARD PRESENTATIONS FROM CHRIS NORWOOD, TRUSTEE OF THE MILPITAS UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD, AND MARIELLA MARTINEZ FROM CSBA LEGAL ON THE TOPIC OF SIGNIFICANT DISPROPORTIONALITY IN SPECIAL EDUCATION, I LEARNED THAT THE TERM SIGNIFICANT DISPROPORTIONALITY REFERS TO THE WIDESPREAD TREND OF STUDENTS OF CERTAIN RACIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS BEING IDENTIFIED FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION AND THEN PLACED IN MORE RESTRICTIVE EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS AND DISCIPLINED AT SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER RATES THAN THEIR PEERS.

SO WE LEARNED ABOUT THE RAMIFICATIONS AND WAYS TO AVOID IT.

ALSO, WE WERE TOLD THAT ALL TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENTS ARE INVITED TO THE SCCSBA ANNUAL HOFFMANN AWARDS DINNER AND CELEBRATION ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 8TH FROM 6 P.M.

TO 9 P.M. THE NEXT SCCSBA MEETING IS ON APRIL 24TH, 2024.

MISS THORSTEINSON PRESENTED ON FINDINGS FROM A JANUARY POLL CONDUCTED BY THEIR CHOOSE CHILDREN CAMPAIGN ON KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION AMONG LIKELY VOTERS IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY.

THESE FINDINGS INDICATED STRONG SUPPORT FOR THE ISSUE ACROSS ALL GROUPS POLLED.

ATTENDEES ALSO HEARD FROM AMAL SAYED FROM THE OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH HAZARD ASSESSMENT AT THE CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.

SHE TALKED ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF WILDFIRE SMOKE AND POOR AMBIENT AIR QUALITY ON CHILDREN'S HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS.

FINALLY, MATTHEW TINSLEY, MANAGER, EARLY LEARNING INITIATIVES, INVITED COALITION MEMBERS TO ADVOCATE FOR ECE BY EMAILING THE CHAIR OF THE ASSEMBLY EDUCATION COMMITTEE.

ASSEMBLYMEMBER MURATSUCHI IN SUPPORT OF AB 1930.

DR. TINSLEY PROVIDED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO SUBMIT COMMENTS USING THE LEGISLATURE'S POSITION LETTER PORTAL AND TEMPLATE WORDING FOR THE MESSAGE.

WE ALSO STARTED BRAINSTORMING, JUST BRAINSTORMING IDEAS FOR NEXT YEAR'S THEME, AND SO TWO OF THE IDEAS THAT KIND OF CAME UP WAS INNOVATION FOR SOCIAL GOOD, HIGHLIGHTING STORIES OF HOW TECHNOLOGY IS BEING USED TO ADDRESS SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES, AND ANOTHER ONE WAS EMPOWERING VOICES, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND DEMOCRACY HOW YOU MATTER, BUT WE'RE, YOU KNOW, STILL TALKING ABOUT IDEAS, AND THE COMMITTEE SUBCOMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE GOING TO START READING BOOKS.

ABOUT THAT STUFF, AND THEN I DID ATTEND THE HEAD START POLICY COUNCIL MEETING.

YOU HEARD FROM A NUMBER OF PARENTS WHO WERE AT THE MEETING.

WE LEARNED ABOUT SOME OF THE BILLS THAT CSBA IS PARTICULARLY EMPHASIZING AND PROMOTING.

IT WAS REALLY, REALLY NICE.

WE GOT TO, YOU KNOW, VISIT THE CHAMBERS AND WE HAD A RECEPTION WHERE NANCY PELOSI CAME BY AND ADAM SCHIFF CAME BY, AND A LOT OF PEOPLE TOOK A BUNCH OF PICTURES, BUT I THOUGHT WHAT WAS PARTICULARLY INSIGHTFUL FOR ME OR I FOUND INSIGHTFUL WAS I WAS ABLE TO SIT IN ON THE APPORTIONMENT COMMITTEE WHEN THE SECRETARY OF EDUCATION SECRETARY CARDONA, I THINK HIS NAME SPOKE ABOUT AND PRESENTED THE BUDGET FOR EDUCATION AND THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS OF WHICH THERE WERE LIKE, I DON'T KNOW, EIGHT OF THEM OR SO THEY WERE ALL, YOU KNOW, LEGISLATORS WERE REAL' INTERESTING IN KIND OF PICKING AT THINGS THAT THE SECRETARY WAS BRINGING UP AS FAR AS BUDGET REQUIREMENTS, BUT ALSO THE SECRETARY WAS VERY TACTFUL AND SKILLED IN KIND OF PARRYING SOME OF THE QUESTIONS BECAUSE THERE WERE THINGS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, TRANSGENDER CHILDREN, WHETHER THE SECRETARY AGREED THAT, YOU KNOW, BOYS AND GIRLS ARE DIFFERENT PHYSICALLY, AND HOW CAN YOU FUND TITLE NINE IF YOU CAN'T DEFINE WHAT A BOY AND A GIRL IS AND HE WAS VERY TACTFUL ABOUT SAYING THAT I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE BUDGET AND THAT'S IT.

SO IT WAS REAL INTERESTING, AND I CAN ACTUALLY SEND YOU THE, THE BUDGET INFORMATION THAT HE PRESENTED, WHICH WAS, YOU KNOW, REAL INTERESTING.

I ALSO ATTENDED THE SILICON VALLEY CAN MEETING WHERE WE TALKED ABOUT KIND OF, AGAIN, THE LEGISLATIVE WORK THAT'S BEING DONE MAINLY THROUGH THE SILICON VALLEY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION.

I ESPECIALLY ENJOYED THE SESSION ON HEALTH EQUITY TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR ADVOCACY PANEL.

I BELIEVE THESE SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT TO HAVE TO ACHIEVE SOME SEMBLANCE OF HEALTH EQUITY IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

I ATTENDED A NUMBER OF COMMUNITY AFTER HOURS OF BREAKING THE FAST, INCLUDING ONE IN FREMONT, WHICH TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN ALSO ATTENDED, AND LOS ALTOS AND MILPITAS, WHERE I MET A NUMBER OF SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES.

I STOPPED BY AT THE SEIU LOCAL 2015 AFTER HOUR AND EVERGREEN, AS WELL AS A COMMUNITY CHANDRA, OR SIGHTING OF THE MOON EVENT IN PALO ALTO.

ON MARCH 29TH, I WAS AT THE KIDS TABLE EVENT HELD TO CELEBRATE OUR LOCAL CHAMPIONS FOR CHILDREN'S SAFETY AND WELL-BEING.

DR. DEWAN WAS THERE ALSO AND THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER JULIE LYTHCOTT-HAIMS, EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTING WITH CHILDREN IN OUR OWN COMMUNITIES.

ON APRIL 6TH, I ATTENDED [INAUDIBLE] ANNUAL CESAR CHAVEZ COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS CELEBRATION AND AWARDS.

PRESIDENT BERTA WAS ALSO ATTENDING, AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT SAFE HOUSING AND HEALTHY BUILDING TECHNIQUES FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO THRIVE.

ON APRIL 9TH, I CO-ORGANIZED AN CO-MODERATING A SESSION ON THE IMPACT OF RACE AND GENDER DISPARITIES ON OUR HEALTH FOR THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS BAY AREA PUBLIC HEALTH SERIES BASED ON DATA, IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT BEING FEMALE IS A HEALTH HAZARD IN OUR COUNTRY, AND THE SAME CAN BE SAID ABOUT BEING A PERSON OF COLOR.

GIVEN THAT 80% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE STUDENTS OF COLOR AND A LARGE PROPORTION ARE FEMALE, WE NEED TO BE MINDFUL OF WEATHERING DEFINED AS THE HEALTH IMPACT OF PERSISTENT STRESS, OFTEN AS A RESULT OF INEQUITIES AND INJUSTICE ON OUR BODIES.

LAST WEEK I ALSO ATTENDED TOWNHALLS BY SENATOR DAVE CORTESE ON RACIAL JUSTICE AND POVERTY AND ON GENDER EQUITY, AND JUSTICE.

DR. DEWAN WAS ONE OF THE PANELISTS AT THE EVENT AND PROBABLY CAN PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION.

ON APRIL 11TH, THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF HEALTH EQUITY AND IMPROVEMENT AND SUPERVISOR ELLENBERG HOSTED POWERFUL FILM SCREENINGS AND A PANEL DISCUSSION ON DESIGNING SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES FOR BLACK FAMILIES.

SAFE AND HEALTHY COMMUNITIES MAY BE AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP IN ACHIEVING EDUCATION EQUITY.

THIS WAS OUR 37TH ANNUAL SANTA CLARA COUNTY TEACHER RECRUITMENT FAIR.

WE HELD IT ON SATURDAY, MARCH 23RD, AND WHILE THE RAIN WAS HEAVY AT TIMES, IT DID NOT DETER THE ENTHUSIASM FROM ANYONE.

38 SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND CHARTER SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED, AND WE HAD A TOTAL OF 500 CANDIDATES ATTEND THE FAIR.

WHILE MOST OF THE CANDIDATES FROM CALIFORNIA, I THOUGHT YOU WOULD FIND IT INTERESTING THAT WE ALSO HAD CANDIDATES APPLYING FOR POSITIONS FROM FLORIDA, ILLINOIS AND VIRGINIA.

WE ALSO HAD CANDIDATES FROM ALL CREDENTIAL TYPES, INCLUDING CHILD DEVELOPMENT PERMITS, K-12 SPECIAL EDUCATION, PUPIL PERSONNEL SERVICES. ALL OF THE SINGLE SUBJECTS.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY.

SEVERAL OF THE DISTRICTS ANECDOTALLY SHARED THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCT INTERVIEWS AND OFFER POSITIONS AT THE EVENT, SO IT'S INCREDIBLY SUCCESSFUL.

I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE STAFF ON ALL OF THEIR WORK AND PUTTING THE TEACHER RECRUITMENT FAIR TOGETHER.

IT IS A BIG LIFT.

IT TAKES EVERYBODY IN THE OFFICE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN, INCLUDING OUR PERSONNEL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, OUR BUSINESS GENERAL SERVICES TEAM, OUR CUSTODIAL AND MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT, AND MANY, MANY OTHERS, AND I JUST WANT TO CONGRATULATE THEM.

ON MARCH 21ST, I SPOKE AT THE MONTHLY SANTA CLARA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION LUNCH AND LEARN, WHERE I PRESENTED ON THE LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA, EQUITY MULTIPLIER, AND THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FUNDING FOR THOSE DISTRICTS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE.

ON MARCH 22ND, I ATTENDED A SYMPOSIUM THAT WAS HOSTED BY JOINT VENTURE SILICON VALLEY CALLED THE CHILD CARE CRISIS AND BUSINESS, THE CASE FOR ACTION, WHERE SEVERAL OF OUR PARTNERS SPOKE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CHILD CARE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.

LATER THAT DAY, I PARTICIPATED IN THE YOUNG WOMEN'S POWER LUNCH HOSTED BY THE SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTY, INCLUDING SEVERAL FROM OUR ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM, WERE INVITED TO HEAR SPEAKERS AND MINGLE WITH LOCAL FEMALE LEADERS, INCLUDING JUDGES, ATTORNEYS, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, AS WELL AS EDUCATION LEADERS, TO SERVE AS MENTORS AND TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE THESE YOUNG WOMEN TO CONSIDER THEIR FUTURE PATHS.

I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE JUDGE JULIA ALOJAMIENTO AND HER TEAM FOR THEIR AMAZING WORK.

THIS IS SUCH A POWERFUL EVENT FOR THESE YOUNG WOMEN, AND I ALSO WANT TO HONOR AND THANK PAIGE REDMOND ON OUR COMMS TEAM FOR ALL OF HER SUPPORT WITH THE EVENT AS WELL.

ON SATURDAY, MARCH 23RD, I PARTICIPATED IN THE WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP AND POLICY SUMMIT HOSTED BY SUPERVISOR CHAVEZ AND THE VALLEY HEALTH FOUNDATION.

ON APRIL 4TH, THE SCCOE HOSTED OUR VIVA EL MARIACHI SHOWCASE.

WE DID HAVE A BIG TENT AND IT MADE THE EVENT JUST A HUGE SUCCESS.

ON APRIL 9TH, I WAS REQUESTED TO TESTIFY AT AN ASSEMBLY HEARING ON ASSEMBLY BILL 2206, WHICH IS ONE OF OUR CO-SPONSORED BILLS TO AMEND CHILD CARE FACILITY LICENSING REQUIREMENTS, AND AS WE DISCUSSED IN JLAC.

THIS IS BECAUSE EXISTING LAW SETS UP BARRIERS TO CHILD CARE PROVIDERS FROM SERVING CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES.

ON APRIL 10TH, I ATTENDED OUR REQUIRED COUNTY ETHICS TRAINING, WHICH IS MANDATED BY ASSEMBLY BILL 1234.

IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOY TO ATTEND.

THIS ENTIRE ROOM WAS TURNED INTO A RED CARPET HOLLYWOOD THEMED EVENT.

MANY PARENT VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED SERVICES AND SUPPORT.

WE HAD PHOTO BOOTHS, LOTS OF DANCING, LOTS OF JOY AND IT WAS INCREDIBLE.

MY DEEP APPRECIATION TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR ATTENDING, AND TO THE STAFF FOR PUTTING ON SUCH AN AMAZING EVENT.

THIS ANNUAL EVENT IS WHERE WE BOTH ADVOCATE AND SHOWCASE STUDENTS AND WE GIVE RECOGNITIONS.

OUR THEME THIS YEAR IS YOUTH INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY, AND WE WILL BE SPOTLIGHTING THE POWER OF YOUTH, VOICE AND ACTION AND DRIVING IMPACTFUL, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE. OUR SECOND ANNUAL CYBERSECURITY SUMMIT IS ON THURSDAY, APRIL 25TH FROM 9 TO 330.

WHERE WE'LL GO PRETTY DEEP INTO SOME OF THE ISSUES AROUND CYBERSECURITY AND SOME OF THE CONNECTEDNESS TO AI AS WELL.

OUR ANNUAL NATIONAL BILINGUAL MULTILINGUAL LEARNER ADVOCACY MONTH SHOWCASE IS ALSO ON THURSDAY, APRIL 25TH.

IT WILL BE FROM 4:30 TO 6 P.M..

IT IS HERE IN PERSON.

OUR THIRD ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY SUMMIT IS SATURDAY, APRIL 27TH FROM 9 TO 3.

WE ARE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR'S THEME, BUILDING CLIMATE RESILIENCY TOGETHER.

WE HAVE A NUMBER OF WONDERFUL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND SCHOOL PROGRAMS TO SHOWCASE.

THAT SAME DAY IS OUR HEART AND SOULS RUN.

THIS IS A FUNDRAISER FOR LOCAL YOUTH HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY THE YMCA.

THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB AND THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION.

FUNDS RAISED THAT COME TO OUR OFFICE ARE USED TO SUPPORT WELLNESS CENTER SERVICES.

THE HOFFMAN AWARDS ARE SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 8TH.

IN ADVANCE, I WANT TO SHOWCASE AND SHARE THAT OUR COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT DOES A LOT OF THE WORK TO PREPARE THE HOFFMANN AWARDS EVENT, INCLUDING THE WONDERFUL VIDEOS THAT SHOWCASE THE AWARD WINNERS.

THE WINNERS THIS YEAR ARE FROM LOS ALTOS SCHOOL DISTRICT, MORGAN HILL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, CUPERTINO UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT, OAK GROVE SCHOOL DISTRICT, METRO ED, AND CAMPBELL UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT.

JUST A REMINDER, TRUSTEES, IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE, I WOULD BE HONORED IF YOU WOULD JOIN US FOR OUR MAY 30TH ANNUAL STAFF RECOGNITION EVENT.

THIS IS THE AREA WHERE TRUSTEES CAN RAISE TOPICS THAT ARE NOT AGENDIZED FOR DISCUSSION, BUT CREATES THE SPACE FOR US TO MENTION TOPICS FOR CONSIDERATION, AND WE ATTEMPT TO DO FOLLOW UP, AND SO I DID WANT TO PROVIDE ONE UPDATE THAT WITH REGARD TO THE REQUEST FOR SPOTLIGHTS OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, AUTHORIZED CHARTER SCHOOLS, TRUSTEE MAH AND I WERE ABLE TO MEET, ALONG WITH RUBY PARRA FROM MY OFFICE AND MEFULA FAIRLEY TO DISCUSS THE IDEAS AND HISTORY OF THIS AGENDA ITEM.

SO I'D LIKE TO HAVE AT LEAST, YOU KNOW, SOME CONSIDERATION OF EXTENDING IT, MOVING IT SOMETHING OR ANOTHER, JUST SO IT'S A MORE MEANINGFUL USE OF PEOPLE'S TIME TO REALLY DISCUSS THE BUDGET.
