OVER THE PAST 22 YEARS, I'VE HELD VARIOUS ROLES WITHIN SCCOE, AND I HAVE WITNESSED FIRST HAND THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF HER GUIDANCE. [00:10:02] SCCOE SERVES AS A LEAD AGENCY FOR THE STATEWIDE RESIDENCY TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER, A GRANT FROM THE COMMISSION ON TEACHER CREDENTIALING FUNDED BY THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR AND BEING AWARDED THIS GRANT, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH SEVERAL EXTERNAL PARTNERS ACROSS THE STATE. I WAS CONSISTENTLY IMPRESSED BY THE HIGH REGARD IN WHICH SCCOE IS HELD IN ALL AREAS OF EDUCATION. THIS RESPECT IS A DIRECT RESULT OF DOCTOR DEWAN STRONG AND COMMITTED LEADERSHIP, HER LONG-TERM VISION AND HER HIGH VALUES TO SERVE THE STUDENT COMMUNITY. THANK YOU. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS DAVID PUTNEY. GOOD EVENING, BOARD PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, I APPRECIATE YOUR ATTENTION AND YOUR TIME TO THIS IMPORTANT MATTER OF EXPRESSING OUR APPRECIATION AND RESPECT FOR DOCTOR DEWAN. I'D LIKE TO USE A METAPHOR OFTEN AS TEACHERS LIKE TO USE. I SEE DOCTOR DEWAN AS AN ORCHESTRATOR. SHE ORCHESTRATES AND IS THE LEADER OF OUR SYMPHONY. SHE PROVIDES THE VISION AND THE CLARITY AS TO WHAT OUR PURPOSE IS AND HOW WE CAN WORK TOGETHER ACROSS THIS AGENCY, ACROSS THE COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA AND ACROSS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. THE SCCOE HAS MANY DIFFERENT STRATEGIC ACTION COMMITTEES, AND I HAPPEN TO BE CO-LEAD FOR STRATEGIC ACTION FIVE. UNDER STRATEGIC ACTION FIVE, WE ARE CREATING A UNIFORM EVALUATION SYSTEM SO WE CAN SORRY, SURVEY SYSTEM SO WE CAN ASSESS THE IMPACT THAT WE ARE MAKING WHILE CONDUCTING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING TO THOSE WE SERVE. I'VE BEEN AT THE COUNTY OFFICE FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND WE'VE NEVER HAD THIS IN PLACE. EACH DIVISION IN OUR DEPARTMENT WOULD DO THEIR OWN SURVEYS AND MAYBE SHARE THEIR DATA WITH OTHERS, AND MAYBE NOT. THIS NOW ALLOWS US TO ENGAGE IN CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT TO AGAIN PROVIDE QUALITY SUPPORT TO DISTRICT SCHOOLS IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT DOCTOR DEWAN'S LEADERSHIP. DOCTOR DEWAN IS A VISIONARY LEADER WHO WORKED TIRELESSLY TO SUPPORT STUDENTS, AND WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE HER. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS CHRISTINE PHAM. PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT. GOOD EVENING EVERYONE. I'M CHRISTINE PHAM, A PROGRAM MANAGER AT HEALTHIER KIDS FOUNDATION. OUR MISSION IS TO REMOVE BARRIERS IMPACTING THE HEALTH, LEARNING, AND LIFE SUCCESS OF SILICON VALLEY YOUTH. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS KIMBERLY ALVAREZ DELGADO. PLEASE PRESENT YOUR COMMENT. GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS KIMBERLY ALVAREZ SALGADO, AND I'M THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AT HEALTHIER KIDS FOUNDATION. AT OUR ORGANIZATION, OUR VISION IS THAT ALL SILICON VALLEY YOUTH ACHIEVE GOOD HEALTH, EDUCATIONAL EQUITY AND SUCCESS IN LIFE AS PRODUCTIVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. AND I'M HERE TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR THE LEADERSHIP OF THE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, DOCTOR MARIANNE DEWAN, AND THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION. BECAUSE OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. DOCTOR DEWAN HAS BEEN A CHAMPION FOR THE HEALTHIER KIDS FOUNDATION IN ENSURING OUR SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO ALL OUR STUDENTS. IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS, THE DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL HEALTH HAS ALSO BEEN SUPPORTING US IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING OF OUR SCREENING DEPARTMENT TO ENSURE THE MOST UP TO DATE SCREENING METHODS GUARANTEEING OUR SANTA CLARA FAMILIES ARE GETTING THE BEST CARE. DOCTOR MARIANNE DEWAN HAS BEEN A PILLAR IN OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH HER WORK AT THE SCCOE AND WE AT THE HEALTHIER KIDS FOUNDATION APPRECIATE OUR LONG-STANDING RELATIONSHIP. WE COULDN'T DO THIS IMPORTANT WORK WITHOUT HER AND THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR TIME. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS SAM HAGLER. [00:15:02] PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT. GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS SAM HAGLER, AND I AM THE DIRECTOR OF GENERAL SERVICES FOR THE SCCOE IN THE GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT. WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WITNESS SOME OF THE GREAT EXPERIENCES THAT THE SCCOE PROVIDES TO OUR STUDENTS. ONE OF THESE EXPERIENCES OCCURRED IN THIS ROOM A FEW MONTHS AGO WHEN A PROM WAS HELD FOR OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS. A RED CARPET LED INTO THE ROOM AND THERE WERE WHITE TABLECLOTHS, FLOWERS, MUSIC, REFRESHMENTS, AND A PHOTO BOOTH. THE STUDENTS WERE DRESSED IN FORMAL ATTIRE, AND THE EVENING REALLY HAD THE FEEL OF WATCHING THE OSCARS ON TV. IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE STUDENTS WERE HAVING A GREAT TIME, AND I'M SURE IT IS A NIGHT THAT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER. I AM PROUD TO WORK FOR AN ORGANIZATION THAT, UNDER DOCTOR DEWAN LEADERSHIP, WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE SUCH A GREAT MEMORY LIKE THIS FOR OUR STUDENTS. THANK YOU. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS BARB FLORES. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. GOOD EVENING, MY NAME IS BARB FLORES, AND I'M A DIRECTOR HERE AT THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION. BUT I'M HERE AS A RESIDENT IN AREA ONE. TODAY, I AM HONORED TO SPEAK ABOUT OUR LEADER WHO EMBODIES THE ESSENCE OF EDUCATIONAL EQUITY. DOCTOR MARIANNE DEWAN AND I PROVIDE MY UNWAVERING SUPPORT FOR HER LEADERSHIP UNDER DOCTOR DEWAN VISIONARY LEADERSHIP. EQUITY IS NOT JUST A BUZZWORD, IT IS A FOUNDATION UPON WHICH OUR DISTRICTS AND OUR AGENCY ARE BUILT. SHE UNDERSTANDS THAT EVERY STUDENT, REGARDLESS OF THEIR BACKGROUND, DESERVES AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED. DOCTOR DEWAN HAS SPEARHEADED MULTIPLE INITIATIVES THAT ENSURE RESOURCES ARE DISTRIBUTED. FAIRLEY CLASSROOMS ARE INCLUSIVE AND EVERY CHILD'S UNIQUE NEEDS ARE MET. CALIFORNIA COLLABORATIVE FOR LEARNING ACCELERATION IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY EXAMPLES. THROUGH OUR TARGETED PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, SHE HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO DISMANTLE BARRIERS AND IMPEDE STUDENT SUCCESS. SHE IS A CHAMPION FOR DIVERSITY AND ENSURING THAT OUR SERVICES REFLECT OUR RICH TAPESTRY OF CULTURES AND EXPERIENCE THAT OUR STUDENTS BRING TO THE TABLE. SHE IS A BEACON OF HOPE AND PROGRESS. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS LETICIA PADILLA. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. TO TALK ABOUT MY SON'S EXPERIENCE IN THE HEAD START PROGRAM, IT'S BEEN WONDERFUL. BEFORE HE EVEN STARTED, HE DIDN'T EVEN ADDRESS ME AS MOM BECAUSE OF HIS SPECIAL NEEDS. AND WITH THE HELP OF HIS TEACHERS AND HIS PEERS, HE WAS ABLE TO ADDRESS ME AND NOT ONLY ALL THE OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY. SO I'D LIKE TO THANK THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR ALL THEIR HELP THAT THEY DO IN KEEPING THE HEAD START PROGRAM. AND I JUST REALLY HOPE THAT WHEN IT COMES TO NEXT YEAR, I CAN BE A MEMBER OF POLICY COUNCIL AGAIN AND KEEP GOING WITH THIS EXPERIENCE AND ENGAGING PARENTS, BECAUSE WE SHOULD HAVE A SAY IN OUR CHILD'S EDUCATION, AND WE WANT TO HAVE A SAY IN OUR CHILD'S EDUCATION. WE WANT TO KEEP HELPING THEM THRIVE. AND MAYBE IF THEY'RE STRUGGLING, JUST KEEP THEM GOING AND HELPING THEM UNDERSTAND THAT EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT AND THAT THEY DESERVE IT BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN. SO I JUST REALLY WANT TO THANK THE BOARD FOR ALL THEIR HELP AND KEEPING THAT PROGRAM ALIVE AND THAT HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ABLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN POLICY COUNCIL AGAIN NEXT YEAR. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS DELIA KLEIN. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. GOOD EVENING. I'M DELIA KLEIN. I'M A PARA EDUCATOR, TRAINER AND A PROUD MEMBER OF THE SEIU UNION. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A PUBLIC COMMENT TONIGHT. A COMMON PRACTICE AT THE START OF A NEW YEAR IS TO SET AN INTENTION. TYPICALLY, PEOPLE CHOOSE A WORD THAT THEY WANT TO SIGNIFY THE COMING YEAR. MY WORD FOR THIS YEAR, FOR THIS NEW SCHOOL YEAR IS NEW. I'M LOOKING FOR NEW AND FRESH EXPERIENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS AND STAFF. I WAS EXCITED TO HEAR OF THE NEW INVOLVEMENT OF BOTH THE SEIU AND THE OFFICE IN THE CALIFORNIA LABOR MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE, AND THE COLLABORATIVE EQUITY IT WILL BRING, I HOPE, FOR NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR UNIONS AND THE OFFICE TO BRING POSITIVE CHANGE IN THE WAY WE WORK TOGETHER. WHAT I DON'T WANT IS A REPEAT OF FALL 2022. DO YOU? I HOPE FOR A CONTRACT AGREEMENT BEFORE JANUARY THIS TIME. THAT'S WHY I'M HERE, TO STAND WITH MY BARGAINING TEAM AND SHOW MY SUPPORT FOR NEW WAGE INCREASES FOR LONGEVITY, COMPENSATION AND INTERPRETING. I SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS YADIRA OROZCO. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM CLEARLY, STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. THIS IS THE FACE OF HEAD START. OUR CHILDREN ARE THE FACE OF HEAD START. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED AT THE BOARD. PARENTS CAME HERE TO EXPRESS THEIR CONCERNS AND FEARS FOR THE PROGRAM AND WE WEREN'T LISTENED TO. INSTEAD, WE HAD TO TAKE ACTION AND BRING REGIONAL. [00:20:01] I HAVE BEEN HUMILIATED, PUT DOWN AND THREATENED OVER AND OVER BY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO HELP US, BUT INSTEAD RETALIATE AGAINST US AND STAFF FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING. ON OUR LAST PC MEETING, WE BROUGHT A MOTION TO INITIATE THE PROCESS TO HIRE A SUBSTITUTE DIRECTOR IMMEDIATELY, WHERE 100% OF THE PC COUNCIL VOTED IN FAVOR, AND INSTEAD WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MOTION WOULD BE ONLY CONSIDERED. WHERE IS THE GOVERNANCE AS WE PARENTS SHARE. THE SO CALLED MISUSE OF FUNDS WAS NOT IN FACT AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE THE PROOF WHERE TERESA IN FACT SHARES THE REAL PURPOSE OF THE REASON BEHIND TAKING THESE FUNDS. STOP LYING TO US. DEWAN AND TERESA SHIPP SHOULD BE ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE OR FIRED. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS MARIA IBANEZ. THEREA IBANEZ. OH, ONE MOMENT FOR ASSISTANCE. PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. HI, MY NAME IS SAIDA. I AM HEAD START. AND THE NEXT SPEAKER IS ALAN IBANEZ. PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. I'M ALAN. I'M HEAD START. THE NEXT SPEAKER IS ADORA FISHER. PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PRESENT YOUR COMMENT. MY NAME IS ADORA FISHER. I HAVE A HARD TIME FOLLOWING THAT. THAT WAS TOO CUTE. I'M HERE REPRESENTING MY DEPARTMENT AT SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION. I'M EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAMS. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE AWARE OF. AND SOMETHING HAPPENED TODAY THAT BROUGHT THIS TO MIND OF THE IMPACT THAT SCCOE HAS ACROSS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. WE HAVE FOUR ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SERVICES DIVISION ALONE THAT SUPPORTS COUNTY OFFICES, TEACHERS DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. MY DEPARTMENT HOLDS A STATEWIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER FOR RESIDENCES. WE HAVE CCLA, WE HAVE THE GEO REGION. WE HAVE THE INCLUSION COLLABORATIVE. THAT IS ALL UNDER DOCTOR DEWAN'S LEADERSHIP. OUR LAST SPEAKER IS LAURA KLEINDALE. PLEASE CLEARLY STATE YOUR NAME AND PROVIDE YOUR COMMENT. HELLO. MY NAME IS LAURA KLYNDANIEL. I'VE SERVED STUDENTS IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY THROUGH MY WORK FOR NEARLY TEN YEARS. BUT TODAY I'M HERE AS A VOTER WHO'S DEEPLY INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY WHERE I WAS BORN, RAISED, AND CONTINUED TO CALL HOME. A FEW YEARS AGO, I REMEMBER DEALING WITH A CRISIS THAT IMMEDIATELY PUT ME INTO PROBLEM SOLVING MODE. ON A CALL WITH DOCTOR DEWAN, I JUST LAUNCHED INTO THE NEED TO KNOWS AND THE TO DO LIST. LIKE I SAID, PROBLEM SOLVING MODE. WHAT DOCTOR DEWAN SAID TO ME HAS STUCK WITH ME EVER SINCE SHE SAID, LAURA, WE'RE GOING TO GET TO ALL THAT. BUT FIRST, HOW ARE YOU? ARE YOU OKAY? WHAT DO YOU NEED? THIS SIMPLE INTERACTION IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW DOCTOR DEWAN LEADS. SHE ASKS QUESTIONS. SHE LISTENS. SHE SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND. SHE IS CALM IN THE FACE OF CHAOS. THAT DAY, SHE PUT ME AS A PERSON FIRST. AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IS THE SAME APPROACH SHE TAKES WHEN IT COMES TO OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THEY COME FIRST. THIS CONCLUDES PUBLIC COMMENT. THANK YOU. WE WILL NOW MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM FOUR, CONSENT ACTION ITEMS. [4. CONSENT ACTION ITEMS] AND I WILL ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE CONSENT ACTION ITEMS 4A THROUGH I. MOVE TO APPROVE THE CONSENT ACTION ITEMS A THROUGH I HAVE A MOTION FROM TRUSTEE DI SALVO. DO I HAVE A SECOND? SECOND. A SECOND FROM TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN. WE WILL NOW VOTE. TRUSTEES, PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE IN BOARD DOCS. PLEASE DO A VERBAL YES FOR ME. A VERBAL AYE FROM TRUSTEE MAH. [00:25:04] AND THAT MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY. THANK YOU TRUSTEES. ON TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM. [A. Program Spotlight: Migrant Education Program] ITEM FIVE, INFORMATION ITEMS. AND AGAIN, TRUSTEES, AS WE MOVE THROUGH THIS EVENING'S INFORMATION ITEMS, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO BE EFFICIENT WITH YOUR REMARKS AND QUESTIONS. WHEN DOCTOR DEWAN INTRODUCES EACH ITEM, SHE WILL IDENTIFY THE APPROXIMATE TIME WE'VE ALLOCATED FOR EACH PRESENTATION. DOCTOR DEWAN, WILL YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE THE FIRST ITEM? YES. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT BERTA. TONIGHT'S FIRST INFORMATION ITEM IS A PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT. THIS EVENING, WE WILL BE SPOTLIGHTING THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. STAFF HAVE PREPARED A TEN MINUTE PRESENTATION, AND I BELIEVE WE HAVE SOME STUDENTS WHO WILL BE JOINING US AS WELL. AND I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF ED SERVICES TERESA SHIPP AND OUR AMAZING AND WONDERFULLY TALENTED MIGRANT EDUCATION STAFF AND STUDENTS TO PRESENT THIS EVENING'S PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT. THANK YOU, DOCTOR DEWAN. GOOD EVENING. TRUSTEES. PRESIDENT BERTA, DOCTOR DEWAN. IT IS MY HONOR, AND I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS PROGRAM. SPOTLIGHT TONIGHT. I AM HERE TO INTRODUCE OUR MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. DOCTOR, OR DIRECTOR ALANIS. PLEASE TAKE IT AWAY. NOT YET. OKAY. YES. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I'M RIGOBERTO LAINEZ, THE DIRECTOR OF THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM, AND THIS EVENING WE'LL PROVIDE A GLIMPSE INTO THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM CONSISTS OF 20 SCCOE STAFF MEMBERS, 27 DISTRICT SUPPORT STAFF AND 24 DISTRICT COORDINATORS. STARTING WITH THE HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM, PRESIDENT LYNDON B JOHNSON ESTABLISHED THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM UNDER THE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT, AND IT WAS REAUTHORIZED UNDER ESEA IN 2015 UNDER TITLE ONE, PART C. IN REGION ONE, OUR MIGRATORY FAMILIES ARE THOSE WHO MAINLY SEEK SEASONAL WORK IN AGRICULTURE AND OFTEN MOVE ACROSS DISTRICT BOUNDARIES WITHIN THE STATE LOOKING FOR EMPLOYMENT. STUDENTS TRAVELING WITHIN THE STATE ARE TRACKED THROUGH THE STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM CALLED MIGRANT STUDENT INFORMATION NETWORK, OR MSIN, AND NATIONALLY THROUGH THE MIGRANT STUDENT RECORDS EXCHANGE INITIATIVE, OR M6. BECAUSE OF THIS REPEATED MOVES, OUR MAIN GOALS ARE TO DECREASE THE BARRIERS THAT PREVENT STUDENTS FROM SUCCEEDING IN SCHOOL SO THAT THEY CAN EARN A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENT. THROUGH OUR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, WE PARTNER WITH THE DISTRICT COORDINATORS IN OUR REGION TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS AGES THREE THROUGH 21 RECEIVE THE FULL BENEFIT FROM THEIR ANNUAL ALLOCATION, WHICH THEY RECEIVE AS A RESULT OF THESE SIX CRITERIA. NOW TO TALK ABOUT THE OTHER SLIDES IS MY COLLEAGUE. PRESS THE BUTTON. THANK YOU. MY NAME IS SAMI PANU. I'M THE IDENTIFICATION AND RECRUITER SUPERVISOR. I WILL BE GOING OVER THE NEXT FEW SLIDES. OUR FAMILIES QUALIFY BASED ON AGRICULTURE, FISHING, LUMBER, AND DAIRY WORK AS SHOWN IN THESE PICTURES. ONCE QUALIFIED, THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THREE YEARS. WHEN FAMILIES MAKE NEW QUALIFYING MOVES, THEY CAN REQUALIFY AND THE THREE-YEAR PERIOD STARTS AGAIN. WITHIN THE 20 REGIONS IN CALIFORNIA, WE ARE REGION ONE. OUR REGION EXTENDS TO SIX COUNTIES. WATSONVILLE AS SEEN HERE AS DFD 11, WHICH STANDS FOR DIRECT FUNDED DISTRICT IS STILL PART OF OUR REGION BUT RECEIVES ITS FUNDS SEPARATELY DUE TO THE LARGE STUDENT ENROLLMENT. OUR STUDENT COUNT IS DETERMINED MID-SEPTEMBER BECAUSE WE RECRUIT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THIS IS WHY THE ENROLLMENT DATA SHOWN IN THIS SLIDE IS FROM THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR. GOOD EVENING EVERYONE. GOOD EVENING EVERYONE. I'M MICHELLE MANRIQUEZ AND I'M THE COORDINATOR FOR THE PROGRAM. UM WITHIN THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM, THERE ARE SIX COMPONENTS. OUR FIRST PRIORITY FOR REGULAR SCHOOL YEAR AND SUMMER SERVICES IS TO LINK STUDENTS AND FAMILIES WITH ANY SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY SERVICES ALREADY AVAILABLE. AFTER THAT, WE PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICES LIKE ACADEMIC INTERVENTIONS, SPEECH AND DEBATE, ACADEMIC EXCURSIONS, AND RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS. OUR SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM SUPPORTS STUDENTS AGES 3 TO 5 AND THEIR PARENTS THROUGH HOME VISITS, WORKSHOPS, AND VIRTUAL CLASSES. [00:30:09] THROUGH THE SOCIAL SERVICES, HEALTH AND NUTRITION COMPONENT, WE PROVIDE VISION AND DENTAL SCREENINGS, HEALTH REFERRALS, CASE MANAGEMENT, AND TRANSPORTATION. THE REGIONAL PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE CONVENES SIX TIMES EACH YEAR TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING THE PROGRAM'S IMPLEMENTATION. FOR IDENTIFICATION AND RECRUITMENT, OUR RECRUITERS USE TECHNIQUES LIKE COMMUNITY CANVASING, ATTENDING VARIOUS SCHOOL FUNCTIONS, AND MAKING NUMEROUS COLD CALLS TO FAMILIES TO FIND AND QUALIFY THEM FOR SERVICES. SOME SAMPLES OF REGULAR AND SUMMER SERVICES INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS, GIFT DISTRIBUTION, LANGUAGE ARTS THROUGH THE ARTS, SCIENCE CAMP, AND MORE. THESE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF REGULAR YEAR END SUMMER SERVICES, INCLUDING SPEECH AND DEBATE, TRANSPORTATION SUPPORT, EDUCATIONAL EXCURSIONS, UNIVERSITY RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS, DEVICE AND HOTSPOT SUPPORT, AND BALLET FOLKLORICO. AND HERE YOU CAN SEE OUR SCHOOL READINESS STUDENTS IN ACTION. THESE IMAGES ARE FROM A HEALTH FAIR WHERE WE PROVIDED VISION AND DENTAL SCREENINGS. THERE ARE ALSO IMAGES OF US DISTRIBUTING FOOD. THESE PICTURES ARE FROM OUR REGIONAL PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS AND A PARENT CONFERENCE. AND HERE YOU CAN SEE SOME OF OUR IDENTIFICATION AND RECRUITMENT TEAM HARD AT WORK. TONIGHT, WE ALSO HAVE TWO STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO SHARE ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE. WE'RE GOING TO START WITH GIOVANNI. MY LIFE IN THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. GOOD EVENING MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND SUPERINTENDENT OF THE SCHOOLS. MY NAME IS GIOVANNI VELAZQUEZ. I AM 12 YEARS OLD AND I LIVE IN GILROY, CALIFORNIA. I AM GOING TO START A SEVENTH GRADE AND SUBMACHINE GUN SCHOOL. I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE A SON OF A MIGRANT FAMILY. MY PARENTS HAVE BEEN A MIGRANT WORKER SINCE 2009, AND WE HAVE MOVED AS A FAMILY BETWEEN THE CITIES OF BAKERSFIELD AND GILROY. I STARTED IN A MIGRANT PROGRAM WHEN I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD IN 2017. I AM A VERY LUCKY CHILD BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN PARTICIPATED IN MANY ACTIVITIES. FOR EXAMPLE, I HAVE TAKEN CLASSES OF MATH, ENGLISH, VISION EXAMS, DENTAL EXAMS AND HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SPEECH AND DEBATE COMPETITIONS. AND THEY ALSO WENT ON A TOUR TO ALCATRAZ ISLAND IN SAN FRANCISCO. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE PROGRAM BECAUSE I HAVE HAD MANY VERY GOOD OPPORTUNITIES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SPEECH AND DEBATE COMPETITION HAS HELPED ME A LOT TO EXPRESS MYSELF MORE EASILY IN FRONT OF THE PUBLIC. AFTER THIS COMPETITION, MY LIFE IS CHANGING TO BE A BRAVER AND A MORE CONFIDENT CHILD. I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS COMPETITION AT THE REGIONAL AND STATE LEVELS AND WON A SECOND-PLACE TROPHY IN BOTH TOURNAMENTS. ALTHOUGH IT WAS DIFFICULT, THIS PROGRAM GAVE ME GIVES A LOT OF SECURITY AND CONFIDENCE. THAT IS WHY I FEEL VERY PROUD TO BE A SON OF A MIGRANT FAMILY. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. THANK YOU. WE NOW HAVE KIMBERLY. GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYBODY. MY NAME IS KIMBERLY QUIROZ. I'M 16 AND I'M A JUNIOR AT WILLOW GLEN HIGH SCHOOL, AND I'VE BEEN IN THE MIGRATION EDUCATION PROGRAM SINCE I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND SINCE BEING IN THE PROGRAM, I'VE EXPERIENCED NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND LEARNED NEW SKILLS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. NOT ONLY DID THIS PROGRAM HELP ME APPLY, BUT ALSO HELPED ME FIND A JOB LAST SUMMER AT SAN JOSE WORKS, AND THAT JOB HELPED ME ENHANCE MY ORGANIZING SKILLS, AND THIS PROGRAM HAS GIVEN ME MANY OTHER OPPORTUNITIES, SUCH AS TRAVELING WITHOUT PARENTS, BUT WITH STUDENTS OUTSIDE OF THE STATE. AND ON THOSE TRIPS, I HAVE LEARNED INDEPENDENCE SKILLS, AND I HAVE ALSO VISITED PLACES I DON'T THINK I WOULD HAVE WITHOUT THE HELP OF THIS PROGRAM, SUCH AS THE WHITE HOUSE, THE US CAPITOL, AND THE SUPREME COURT. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH AND HAVE MET MANY INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE, SUCH AS THE SENATOR OF CALIFORNIA, ALEX PADILLA, WHO GAVE WHO GAVE US WORDS OF WISDOM TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION AND TAUGHT US THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING WHEN 18 TO CHANGE VIEWS AND TO HAVE A VOICE. AND BASED ON OUR WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIP, IT MADE ME REALIZE HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE THE DIVERSITY WE HAVE HERE IN THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY. [00:35:05] THANKS TO THIS PROGRAM, I HAVE ALSO MET NEW FRIENDS, SUCH AS IN SAN FRANCISCO AND SAN JOSE, WHICH I STILL KEEP IN CONTACT WITH TODAY. THE MIGRATION EDUCATION PROGRAM INSPIRES ME TO PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION, SO ONE DAY I CAN BECOME A MIGRANT EDUCATION WORKER AS WELL AND GIVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES TO MIGRANT STUDENTS IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. THANK YOU EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU, DOCTOR JUAN, FOR ALLOWING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE ABOUT THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION. AND I JUST COULDN'T RESIST THE APPLAUSE BECAUSE I WAS JUST SO GRATEFUL TO GIOVANNI AND KIMBERLY FOR BEING HERE TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH US FIRSTHAND, AND ALSO WITH THE COMMUNITY. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO HEAR FROM YOU AND THE AND LEARN ABOUT THE IMPACT THAT THE PROGRAM IS HAVING. SO THANK YOU AND THE FAMILIES AS WELL FOR JOINING TO SHARE THAT FEEDBACK WITH US. I'LL GO AROUND TRUSTEES, DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? TRUSTEE CHON AND THEN TRUSTEE MAH. YEAH. I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY THANKS TO OUR STAFF TO GET PUT TOGETHER THIS PRESENTATION. I KNOW THIS IS A REALLY SPECIAL PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE, AND I'M SO PROUD OF THE WORK THAT OUR OFFICE DOES. AND THANK YOU TO OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE YOU'RE THE BEST. YOU'RE WHO WE WANT TO HEAR FROM. AND I THINK IT'S GREAT TO SEE JUST THE WONDERFUL WORK AND YOUR AWESOME PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS TO SPEAK INTO THESE MICROPHONES. THAT'S A TESTAMENT TO THE EDUCATION THAT WE PROVIDE FOR OUR MIGRANT STUDENTS. SO THAT WAS EXCELLENT AND I'M SO PROUD TO SEE THAT. SO THANK YOU. THANK YOU. I WAS JUST CURIOUS HOW LARGE IS OUR PROGRAM? DO WE KIND OF HAVE A ROUGH NUMBER OF STUDENTS? AND JUST TO ROUGH NUMBERS? NOT NECESSARY TO BE SUPER EXACT, BUT I'M CURIOUS TO KNOW HOW BIG OUR PROGRAM IS IN THESE AREAS. YES, I CAN ANSWER THAT. I BELIEVE THAT ON SLIDE NUMBER NINE, WE ARE CLOSE TO 5000 STUDENTS. AND THERE'S A BREAKDOWN ON THE SIX COUNTIES THAT WE SERVE. BUT IT'S ABOUT 5000 STUDENTS. TRUSTEE MAH. THANK YOU. I WAS JUST GOING TO ASK SOMETHING SIMILAR. I MEAN, WITH 5000 STUDENTS AND THEY'RE ALL MANAGED BY YOUR OFFICE FOR THIS THIS REGION ONE, RIGHT? THAT IS CORRECT. THAT'S AMAZING. AND SO, A COUPLE OF THINGS IS SO IS THE STAFF IN THE OFFICE THE THREE OF YOU, OR THERE'S MORE STAFF THAN THAT? VERY GOOD QUESTION, THANK YOU. SO, WE HAVE 20 STAFF MEMBERS IN THE MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAM. WE ALSO HAVE 27 DISTRICT SUPPORT STAFF THAT WE ALSO SUB GRANT FUNDING TO THEM. AND OF COURSE, THEIR DISTRICT COORDINATORS THAT ARE ALSO PAID THROUGH THEIR DISTRICTS THAT HELP US SUPPORT THE STUDENTS. AND SO SINCE THE STUDENTS ARE SCATTERED AMONG ALL OF THE DIFFERENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND IN ALL THESE DIFFERENT COUNTIES, AT LEAST FOR OUR REGION ONE OFFICE, OUR REGION ONE AREA. HOW ARE THE KIDS BROUGHT TOGETHER FOR SOME OF THESE FIELD TRIPS? OR I KNOW THAT I CAME ON A WEEKEND, FOR INSTANCE, FOR ONE OF THE SPEECH AND DEBATE, YOU KNOW, COMPETITIONS. BUT I MEAN, ARE THE STUDENTS BROUGHT TOGETHER OTHER THAN WEEKEND TIMES OR HOW IS THAT COORDINATED FOR THESE GROUP ACTIVITIES LIKE SCIENCE CAMP, ETC.? SO, FOR ANY AFTER SCHOOL INTERVENTION PROGRAMS, SO WHAT WE DO BECAUSE WE'RE A SUPPLEMENTAL PROGRAM, WE FIRST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE LINK THEM TO THE SERVICES THAT THE SCHOOL ALREADY PROVIDES. THEY PROVIDE A WEALTH OF INFORMATION. BUT WHEN WE CAN DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT, LIKE FOR EXAMPLE, SPEECH AND DEBATE BECAUSE THEY DON'T OFFER. SO, WHAT WE START DOING IS WE GO THROUGH THE LISTS OF STUDENTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED. WE CALL WE SEEK THE INTEREST LIKE ANY OTHER PROGRAM, AND WE START TALKING TO THE PARENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE OKAY WITH IT. WE TRY TO CONVINCE THEM ON THAT, AND WE SHOW THEM PICTURES, VIDEOS, TESTIMONIALS SO THAT WE CAN GET THEIR PARTICIPATION. FANTASTIC. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU FOR THE QUESTION STUFF. TRUSTEE DI SALVO. THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT. I ALSO WANTED TO COMPLIMENT GIOVANNI AND KIMBERLEY FOR YOUR ELOQUENCE, YOUR CONFIDENCE TO COME HERE TONIGHT AND TO SPEAK ABOUT YOUR PROGRAM. ONE OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO TELL YOU BOTH AS STUDENT LEADERS, BUT ALSO TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND TO THE AUDIENCE HERE TONIGHT, THAT LEADERSHIP REALLY [00:40:01] MATTERS. AND BACK IN 1965, THE ELEMENTARY SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT PROVIDED MIGRANT EDUCATION. AND THE PRESIDENT AT THE TIME, LYNDON JOHNSON, SIGNED THAT ACT. NOT EVERYTHING COULD BE DONE AT THE STATE LEVEL. SO, WHEN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TALKS ABOUT ELIMINATING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL AND HAVE THE STATES TAKE THAT MONEY, IT'S ENTIRELY POSSIBLE WOULD ELIMINATE PROGRAMS LIKE THIS IN SOME STATES AND CHILDREN WOULD FALL THROUGH THE CRACKS. SO IN SUMMARY. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THE COURAGE TO SPEAK HERE TONIGHT, AND I HOPE YOU GO ON AS YOU MET SENATOR PADILLA. I'M SURE YOU'VE MET ELECTED OFFICIALS. THERE'S SEVEN OF US HERE TONIGHT. THINK ABOUT BECOMING ONE. AND AS YOU THINK ABOUT BECOMING ONE, BECAUSE YOU COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OTHERS. SO, MY ONLY COMMENTS. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. WELL, ONCE AGAIN, WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE THIS EVENING AND SHARING THIS INSIGHT WITH US AND HEARING FROM OUR STUDENTS DIRECTLY. THANK YOU. THANK YOU ALL. DOCTOR DEWAN, WILL YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE THE NEXT ITEM? SO THANK YOU, PRESIDENT BERTA, AND THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE MIGRANT STAFF FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE, AND TO THE STUDENTS FOR BEING WITH US TONIGHT. OUR NEXT ITEM IS A CHARTER SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT. [B. Charter School Spotlight: University Preparatory Academy] AND FOR THIS ITEM, I'M PLEASED TO INTRODUCE DAVID PORTER, WHO IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT UNIVERSITY PREPARATORY ACADEMY, AND LUCAS KELLEHER, WHO IS DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES AT THE UNIVERSITY PREPARATORY ACADEMY. WE'VE REQUESTED THAT OUR GUESTS PREPARE FOR A TEN MINUTE REPORT. WELCOME. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR. I SHOULD PUSH THE BUTTON. PUSH THE BUTTON? YEAH. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INVITING US HERE TONIGHT. GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT BERTA, VICE PRESIDENT ROCHA, SUPERINTENDENT DOCTOR DEWAN AND ALL OF THE SSCOE BOARD MEMBERS. IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO SPEAK TO YOU ABOUT UPA THIS EVENING. BEFORE I BEGIN, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY APPRECIATION OF DAVID. COULD YOU JUST PULL THE MIC A LITTLE BIT CLOSER? I NOTICED IT'S ON, BUT WE'RE NOT HEARING QUITE AS WELL I GOT YOU. THAT'S BETTER. THANKS. I'D LIKE TO SHARE MY APPRECIATION OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FAIRLEY AND THE ENTIRE CHARTER SCHOOL STAFF. THEY'RE INCREDIBLY HELPFUL TO THE ENTIRE PROCESS. AND A GREAT PARTNER. HERE WITH ME TONIGHT IS DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES LUCAS KELLEHER. AND OUR JOB THIS EVENING IS TO SHARE WITH YOU THE MANY WAYS OUR STUDENTS ARE FINDING SUCCESS AND THE DYNAMIC STAFF THAT SUPPORTS THEM EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. NEXT SLIDE. UNIQUE TO OUR COMMUNITY IS HOW ALL STAKEHOLDERS, STUDENTS, PARENTS AND STAFF BELIEVE IN THE MISSION AND KNOW THAT ANY STUDENT CAN FIND SUCCESS AT UPA. IN THE BOOK CULTURAL RESPONSIVE PEDAGOGY, DOCTOR ZARETTA HAMMOND EXPLAINS THAT STUDENTS NEED BOTH RIGOR AND COMPASSION TO SUCCEED. AT UPA, WE BELIEVE EVERY STUDENT CAN MEET AND EXCEED THEIR OWN EXPECTATIONS THROUGH CHALLENGING AND YET RIGOROUS WORK. IN OUR MODEL, WE HAVE SEEN STUDENTS DEVELOP RESILIENCY, SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND THE ABILITY TO SEE COLLEGE SUCCESS AS A REALITY FOR THEMSELVES. NEXT SLIDE. THE STUDENTS THAT ATTEND UPA ARE RESIDENTS FROM ALL OVER SANTA CLARA COUNTY AND HAVE CREATED A VERY DIVERSE COMMUNITY FOR UPA. WE BELIEVE THAT ANY STUDENT WHO CHOOSES UPA AS THEIR SCHOOL WILL FIND A SAFE, WELCOMING AND CARING ENVIRONMENT. WHEN A STUDENT STEPS INTO A CLASSROOM, THEY ARE MET BY A TEACHER WHO SEES DIVERSITY AS A STRENGTH. DIVERSITY ALSO COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS, AND WE FULLY SUPPORT DIVERGENT LEARNERS. OUR COORDINATOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION AND 504 SAYS IT BEST. STUDENTS WITH LEARNING NEEDS LEARN THE SAME AS ANY OTHER STUDENT, AND THEY WERE GUIDED BY OUR ASSISTANCE AND OUR SUPPORT. NEXT SLIDE. IN 2023 AND 2024, WE HAVE HAD A BANNER YEAR FOR ACADEMIC GROWTH. FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS, WE HAVE INVESTED IN CREATING CLASSROOM CULTURES THAT ARE SUPPORTIVE OF OUR DIVERSE LEARNERS. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS WORK IS REALLY STARTING TO PAY OFF. OUR MATH TEACHERS HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO CREATE ENGAGING CURRICULUM, AND THE RESULT HAS BEEN A 6% INCREASE IN OUR CAST SCORES. THE 2024 AP EXAM RESULTS, WHICH JUST CAME OUT ABOUT A MONTH AGO, SPEAKS TO OUR FOCUS ON CREATING ACCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS IN OUR ADVANCED COURSES. WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT OUR STEM RESULTS FOR OUR UNDERREPRESENTED AND SED STUDENTS. [00:45:04] FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU LOOK AT CALCULUS AB, WE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH ACROSS THE ENTIRE BOARD. SED IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS SAW 50% INCREASE IN THEIR SUCCESS RATES AND OUR LATIN HISPANIC X STUDENTS SAW A 254% INCREASE. NEXT SLIDE. MR. KELLER, IF YOU CAN TALK ABOUT OUR STUDENT DATA. WE'VE SEEN A PRECIPITOUS DECLINE ACROSS ALL SIGNIFICANT SUBGROUPS AND SUSPENSIONS, AND THAT'S DUE TO THE HARD WORK OF NOT ONLY OUR STAFF, BUT ALSO OUR TEACHERS AND IMPLEMENTING RESTORATIVE PRACTICES, TEACHING KIDS TO INTEGRATE, REFLECT AND HEAL. WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING PROGRAM LED BY OUR COORDINATOR OF MENTAL HEALTH. AND RATHER THAN PUNISH KIDS, WE WORK WITH THEM AND FAMILIES TO RECEIVE COUNSELING FOR LONG TERM BEHAVIORAL CHANGE. OUR TEACHERS HAVE ACCESS TO OVER 500 SEL LESSONS, AND THEY ARE SUPPORTED BY ADMIN AND FACILITATING SEL LESSONS TO SUPPORT FURTHER STUDENT GROWTH. NEXT SLIDE. THE FINANCIAL OUTLOOK FOR UPA IS QUITE HEALTHY. OUR STRATEGIC FINANCIAL PLAN HAS ALLOWED US TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING EDUCATOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND NOVEL WAYS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM. STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE BEST TOOLS AND CURRICULUM NEEDED FOR THEIR SUCCESS. WE ARE SO PROUD OF OUR HIGH ATTENDANCE RATES AS WELL, WHICH WE ATTRIBUTE TO OUR STUDENTS LOVE OF LEARNING AND OUR WELCOMING COMMUNITY. NEXT SLIDE. UPA WAS FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT A SMALL COMMUNITY CAN RESULT IN A STRONG ACADEMIC GAINS. OUR SMALL COMMUNITY ALLOWS FOR STUDENTS TO FEEL RECOGNIZED AND SEEN BY THEIR TEACHERS AND THE STAFF. WHEN A STUDENT IS IN A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS OR NEEDS A SHOULDER TO LEAN ON, WE HAVE A TEAM OF DEDICATED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE ON CAMPUS ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. ACADEMIC COUNSELING IS IMPORTANT TO HELPING STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR THEIR ACADEMIC AND COLLEGE DREAMS AS WELL. WE HAVE INVESTED IN EXPANDING OUR COUNSELING DEPARTMENT, AND ONE OF THE MOST ENDEARING FEATURES OF OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM COMES DURING THE SENIOR YEAR, WHEN EVERY STUDENT WHO IS GRADUATING AND APPLYING FOR COLLEGE, WHICH IS EVERYBODY, SITS DOWN WITH THEIR COUNSELOR AND GETS A PERSONALIZED LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR THEIR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS. NEXT SLIDE. MR. KELLER WILL TALK ABOUT A DAY IN THE LIFE. ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS THAT I LOVE ABOUT WORKING AT UP EVERY DAY, AND THAT IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER SCHOOL I'VE WORKED AT IS HOW READILY ACCESSIBLE SUPPORT FROM ACADEMICS TO SELL COMES INTO PLAY. AT EVERY CORNER IN EVERY PART OF THE SCHOOL. WE FOSTER AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS KIDS TO BE SEEN AND FEEL A SENSE OF DIGNITY. FROM THAT, WE HAVE MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO RECEIVE SUPPORT NOT ONLY AFTER SCHOOL, BUT DURING THE DAY, THROUGH SEMINAR, THROUGH OPEN TUTORIAL, WHERE THEY CAN PICK AND RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM SOME OF THEIR BEST TEACHERS AND MOST TRUSTED ADULTS ON CAMPUS ALL THE WAY TO LEARN IT. WHERE WE PROVIDE TUTORING AND SUPPORT FROM PEERS AND MONITORED AND SUPPORTED THROUGH TEACHERS EVERY SINGLE DAY. NEXT SLIDE. UPA EDUCATORS ARE COMMENDED FOR HELPING STUDENTS FIND ACADEMIC SUCCESS BY PROVIDING MULTIPLE WAYS TO DEMONSTRATE LEARNING. THIS MEANS THAT TEACHERS ARE PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO RETAKE QUIZZES, TESTS OR HOMEWORK EVEN PAST THE MARKING PERIOD OR THE SEMESTER MARK, WE'VE BEGUN TO EXPLORE UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING AS A TEAM. UDL IS A METHODOLOGY THAT WILL HELP US LOOK AT OUR LEARNING TARGETS, RECOGNIZE WHO IS IN THE ROOM, AND ADJUST OUR LEARNING STRATEGIES PROACTIVELY. WE'VE BEEN IMPLEMENTING UDL FOR AN ENTIRE DAY AND IT'S GOING GREAT. NEXT SLIDE. UPA'S MISSION IS FOR STUDENTS TO INTERN EXCEL IN THE BEST UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES IN THE NATION. IT IS HUMBLING TO SEE THAT UNDERREPRESENTED AND UNDUPLICATED STUDENTS ARE MAKING THAT DREAM A REALITY. UPA IS AN AMAZING AND UNIQUE LEARNING SPACE CREATED BY PEOPLE THAT BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF EDUCATION TO CHANGE LIVES, AND A COMMUNITY THAT TRUSTS US TO DO THAT WORK. THE SECRET INGREDIENTS TO OUR SUCCESS HAVE BEEN A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CULTURE THAT ENCOURAGES TEACHERS TO SEEK OUT THE MOST CURRENT AND EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES. A CULTURE OF INCLUSION AND A MISSION AND VISION THAT IS POWERFUL YET CLEAR. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO SHARE THIS STORY WITH YOU, AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. THANK YOU SO MUCH, DAVID, AND FOR THE PRESENTATION AND BEING HERE TO TO SHARE THE INFORMATION WITH US AND GIVE US INSIGHT ON YOUR SCHOOL. WE WILL HEAR FROM TRUSTEES, BUT TWO JUST REALLY QUICK THINGS. I REALLY APPRECIATED SEEING THE DISAGGREGATED DATA ACTUALLY ON NOT JUST ASIAN, BUT ACTUALLY A BREAKDOWN THAT WAS REALLY INTERESTING AND INSIGHTFUL TO SEE. [00:50:03] SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT. AS WELL AS THE 500 SQL LESSONS, THAT'S QUITE IMPRESSIVE. SO, THANK YOU. AND I'LL TURN IT OVER TO TRUSTEES FOR QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS IF YOU HAVE ANY TRUSTEE LARI. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY. SO, I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM. HOW DOES IT WORK? LIKE DO YOU HAVE AN OPEN-DOOR POLICY OR DO YOU TAKE REFERRALS FROM TEACHERS? YES. SO, STUDENTS CAN SELF-CONSENT AND SELF-REFER. AND THEN IT'S ABOUT 70% STUDENTS REFER THEMSELVES AND ABOUT 30% REFERRAL FROM FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS AND PARENTS. AND SO, IT'S PRETTY CAN LIKE PRETTY COMPREHENSIVE IN TERMS OF HOW WE HAVE IT. AND WE HAVE TIERS OF THERAPISTS. SO, OUR HIGHEST NEED STUDENTS AND FAMILIES ARE SEEN BY LMFT WHO'S VERY EXPERIENCED IN SUPPORTING THAT. TRUSTEE MAH. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT BERTA. I JUST HAVE KIND OF A DETAILED QUESTION. SO I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S QUITE AS PERTINENT PERHAPS, BUT I WAS LOOKING AT THE AP EXAM RESULTS, AND SO I WAS WONDERING, HOW ARE AP EXAMS SCORED NOW? IT USED TO BE 1 TO 5, BUT THESE NUMBERS ARE ALL PERCENTAGES AND SUCH. I MEAN, WHAT HOW ARE AP EXAMS DONE NOWADAYS? YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. THEY ARE STILL GRADED ON A ONE THROUGH FIVE SCALE. WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT ON THAT CHART IS THE PERCENTAGE OF GROWTH FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR. SO THAT'S THE TOTAL SCORES OF ALL THE STUDENTS. YES. FROM YEAR TO YEAR. SO, FOR CALCULUS AB IF WE LOOK AT THE SOCIOECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS RIGHT. FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR, WE SAW 50% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO PASSED THAT EXAM. OKAY. SO THIS IS PASSING EXAM. SO, THREE OR ABOVE. YES. OKAY. SO, IT'S NOT ACTUALLY A TOTAL OF THEIR SCORES. NO NOT A TOTAL OF SCORES. OKAY. SO, THESE ARE THE PASSING. OH I SEE OKAY. I THINK THERE IS A CATEGORY THAT SAYS TOTAL MEAN SCORE AS WELL THOUGH RIGHT ABOVE THE. YEAH. AT THE BOTTOM THERE. YEAH. SO, IF YOU LOOK AT ALL OF THE CATEGORIES PUT TOGETHER THAT'S THE TOTAL MEAN SCORE FOR THAT FOR THAT PARTICULAR DISAGGREGATED AREA. OKAY. AND SO THAT AND SO IS THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THOUGH THE SAME? I MEAN, IT'S A DIFFERENT NUMBER OF STUDENTS, RIGHT, WHO ARE IN THE FREE REDUCED CATEGORY. AND SO IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW KIND OF HOW MANY STUDENTS THIS IS. IT'S JUST TO GIVE IT A LITTLE BIT MORE PERSPECTIVE. YEAH, WE I DEFINITELY COULD GET THAT TO YOU. BUT WE GAVE OVER 650 AP EXAMS FOR A STUDENT POPULATION OF 700. THAT'S IMPRESSIVE. SO WHAT ARE THE. ARE THERE AP CLASSES FOR FRESHMEN THEN, OR FRESHMEN ALLOWED TO TAKE AP CLASSES? AP COURSES START AT THE FRESHMAN. SORRY, AT THE SOPHOMORE YEAR WITH AP WORLD HISTORY. AND STUDENTS CAN ALSO ACCESS THROUGH AP SPANISH LANGUAGE. THAT'S FANTASTIC. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. TRUSTEE DI SALVO. THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT. I WAS WONDERING IF TEACHER RECRUITMENT IS AN ISSUE FOR YOU AT ALL, SINCE IT IS AN ISSUE FOR SO MANY THOSE IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR IN EDUCATION. OR RETENTION? RECRUITMENT? RETENTION? I BELIEVE OUR RETENTION HAS BEEN, I WOULD SAY, VERY STRONG OVER THE LAST 4 OR 5 YEARS, EVEN COMING OUT OF COVID. THAT'S BEEN INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE. SO, WE CAN HAVE A CONTINUITY OF EDUCATIONAL CARE FOR STUDENTS. IF YOU'RE IF YOU ASKED US A YEAR AGO ABOUT TEACHER RECRUITMENT, WE WOULD SAY, YES, WE'RE IN THE SAME BOAT AS EVERYONE ELSE. WE GOT INCREDIBLY LUCKY THIS YEAR OR BLESSED OR WHATEVER THE WORD IS. WE HAVE A CROP OF NEW TEACHERS THAT ARE JUST ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. AND AND AGAIN, THIS IS OUR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL TODAY, AND KIDS ARE ALREADY TALKING ABOUT THESE NEW TEACHERS AND THE IMPACT THAT THEY'RE HAVING. SO I REALLY FEEL LIKE WE'RE IN AN AMAZING SPOT THIS YEAR. VERY ENCOURAGING. THANK YOU SO MUCH. TRUSTEE CHON. THANK YOU. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU CAN JUST GIVE US LIKE A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF HOW YOU SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS WITH IEPS AND 504, LIKE THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. YEAH. SO A LOT OF IT IS OBVIOUSLY RESPONSIVE SERVICES DELIVERY MODEL. SO MYSELF AND THE TEAM WORK VERY CLOSELY IN TERMS OF DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE IEP THAT IS ALIGNED. SO WHILE WE DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE THE SAME POPULATION THAT REFLECTS THE STATE AVERAGE, WE REALLY DO PROVIDE VERY INTENSIVE SUPPORT. [00:55:03] THROUGH PRIMARILY RESOURCE A RESOURCE RSP MODEL. BUT AGAIN, WE WORK WITH ALL THE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN DEVELOPING A RESPONSIVE SERVICES DELIVERY FOR ALL STUDENTS. AND SO WE HAVE NO GAPS IN PROBLEMS IN TERMS OF PROVIDING ALL THE RELATED SERVICES. AND, AND WE HAVE A PRETTY COMPREHENSIVE TEAM IN TERMS OF EVEN OUR LMFT IS ALSO A LICENSED SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. SO, WE HAVE A LOT OF COMPREHENSIVE PARTNERS IN THE WORK AND EXPERTS AT OUR SCHOOL TO SUPPORT THE LEARNING. BUT ALSO, ONE THING I'M VERY PROUD OF IS OUR MTSS GROWTH THIS YEAR IN SUPPORTING STUDENTS FROM HAVING TO NEED AN IEP. BUT WE DO REALLY WORK ON BUILDING RESPONSIVE SERVICES DELIVERY MODEL FOR ALL STUDENTS, PRIMARILY THROUGH THE RESOURCE. RSP MODEL. AWESOME. THANK YOU. AND I HEARD IT WAS THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. SO, THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. JUST A QUICK FOLLOW UP TO TRUSTEE CHON'S QUESTION ACTUALLY, IN TERMS OF YOUR STUDENTS IN YOUR SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM, JUST WONDERING MORE ABOUT HOW YOU HELP SUPPORT OR MAYBE DURING THE ENROLLMENT PROCESS, WHAT STRATEGIES ARE YOU EMPLOYING TO KIND OF HELP ADDRESS YOU KNOW, ENSURING THAT STUDENTS KNOW, OR FAMILIES KNOW THAT STUDENTS WITH IEPS ARE WELCOME. I'M JUST LOOKING AT, YOU KNOW, THE PERCENTAGES AND THEY ARE LOWER THAN WHAT WE'D LIKE TO SEE IN TERMS OF THE HOME DISTRICT BEING SAN JOSE UNIFIED IN THAT AREA SPECIFICALLY. YEAH, I THINK ONE OF THE THINGS IS THAT OUR RECRUITMENT EVENTS, WE HAVE OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION FIVE FOUR COORDINATOR ALWAYS THERE AND THEN MYSELF IS ALSO PRESENT. AND SO WE REALLY DO WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH FAMILIES WHO DO HAVE IEPS IN TERMS OF SUPPORTING THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS, IN TERMS OF THE ENROLLMENT AND THE LOTTERY PROCESS. SO AT ANY SORT OF RECRUITMENT EVENT, WE DO HAVE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOR PARENTS WHO FOR STUDENTS WHO DO HAVE IEPS AND 504S FOURS. THAT'S GREAT TO HEAR. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE MORE DATA ON SPECIAL EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTED IN FUTURE PRESENTATIONS PERHAPS. ABSOLUTELY. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN FOR BEING HERE. I FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL AS A TEACHER. I KNOW IT'S A BIG DEAL. SO THANK YOU FOR MAKING TIME THIS EVENING TO BE HERE. WE APPRECIATE IT. LOOKS LIKE THAT'S ALL. ALL RIGHT UM DOCTOR DEWAN, WILL YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE THE NEXT ITEM? SO, OUR NEXT ITEM WILL BE OUR CHARTER SCHOOLS UPDATE AND THIS IS GOING TO BE PRESENTED BY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MEFULA FAIRLEY. ARE WE. OH, ACTUALLY MEFULA I SEE THAT YOU ARE HERE. BUT OUR NEXT ITEM. AM I TOO EARLY? YOU ARE TOO EARLY. YOU'RE KEEPING US ON OUR TOES. THANK YOU, I APPRECIATE THAT. SO, OUR NEXT ITEM IS THE BOARD PRIORITIES QUARTERLY REPORT. [C. Board Priorities Quarterly Update] AND THIS IS AN UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF THE WORK THAT WE'VE BEEN DOING RELATED TO THE BOARD PRIORITIES. FOR THIS ITEM, I, ALONG WITH MY EXECUTIVE CABINET MEMBERS, WILL BE PRESENTING, AND WE HAVE A COUPLE OF STUDENTS WHO WILL ALSO BE PRESENTING. WE'VE PREPARED AN APPROXIMATELY 12-MINUTE PRESENTATION. THIS PRESENTATION IS FOR A QUARTERLY UPDATE ON PROGRESS TOWARD THE SCCBOE ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS. INCLUDED WITH THIS UPDATE ARE SUMMARY WORKING DOCUMENTS THAT YOU CAN SEE IN THE BOARD AGENDA ITEM. THEY HIGHLIGHT OUR WORK RELATING TO THESE AREAS. THE ICONS INDICATE OUR ASSESSMENT AS TO THE CORRELATION BETWEEN OUR EFFORTS AND THE PRIORITY AREAS. AND THE SECOND DOCUMENT SHOWS HOW AGENDA ITEMS BROUGHT FORWARD TO THE BOARD ARE SPECIFICALLY ALIGNED WITH THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS. THIS QUARTERLY REPORT IS A SUPPLEMENT TO THE OTHER REPORTS, AGENDA ITEMS, AND PRESENTATIONS PREVIOUSLY PRESENTED. THE SCCOE ADOPTED CORE PRINCIPLES TO FOCUS OUR WORK ON EQUITY, DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND PARTNERSHIP. THE SCCOE MISSION AND GOALS HELP US TO ORGANIZE OUR WORK TO IMPROVE ACCESS FOR STUDENTS. PROVIDE QUALITY SUPPORT TO SERVICE TO OTHERS AND OUR INTERNAL ORGANIZATION AND TO BE A PREMIER SERVICE ORGANIZATION. WE CONTINUE TO ALIGN OUR WORK WITH OUR VISION AND VALUES AS NOTED ON THE SLIDE. THESE VALUES GROUND OUR EFFORTS TO LEVERAGE COLLECTIVE CAPACITY AND TO REMAIN FOCUSED ON STUDENT SUCCESS. WE WILL BRIEFLY HIGHLIGHT EACH OF THE PRIORITY AREAS THIS EVENING, AND WE'LL GO MORE IN DEPTH ON TWO PRIORITY AREAS THIS EVENING. THOSE TWO AREAS ARE SPECIAL EDUCATION COURT AND COMMUNITY SCHOOLS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE LITERACY. I'D NOW LIKE TO INTRODUCE DOCTOR DEBBIE GORGULHO, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, TO BEGIN THE UPDATE. [01:00:06] THANK YOU, DOCTOR DEWAN. AS STATED ON THE BOARD PRIORITIES, IT IS OUR SHARED INTENT THAT GROUNDED IN IN YOUTH VOICE AND THROUGH ADVOCACY IN THE PURSUIT OF FUNDING, WE WILL ADVANCE EQUITY, EDUCATIONAL AND SYSTEMIC JUSTICE. THIS GRAPHIC ILLUSTRATES HOW THE BOARD PRIORITIES INTERSECT WITH THE JLAC FOCUS AREAS AND THE SCCOE GOALS. FOR EACH PRIORITY AREA, WE HAVE LISTED MUCH INFORMATION FOR EACH SLIDE. EACH PRESENTER WILL HIGHLIGHT A FEW AREAS FROM EACH SLIDE. WE WILL BEGIN TONIGHT'S PRESENTATION WITH OUR PROGRESS TOWARDS THE BOARD PRIORITY OF EMPOWERING CHILD WELLNESS. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR EMPOWERING CHILD WELLNESS. THE STUDENT WELLNESS ADVISORY GROUP SWAG GRADUATES ARE TAKING THEIR LEARNING TO HIGHER EDUCATION. THEY HAVE BUILT A SOLID FOUNDATION WITHIN OUR COUNTY BY TRAINING NEW LEADERS FOR OUR SWAG ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN OUR LEAS. THANK YOU DOCTOR. I AM DAVID WU, HEAD OF HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY, AND WE'LL BE SHARING WITH YOU AN UPDATE ON EARLY LEARNING AND CARE. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR EARLY LEARNING AND CARE. THE EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM CONTINUES TO PARTNER WITH AGENCIES TO SUPPORT THOSE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN EARLY LEARNING AND CARE. DUE TO THESE PARTNERSHIPS, WE HAVE GRADUATED OUR FIRST GROUP OF APPRENTICE TEACHERS WHO ARE NOW ELIGIBLE FOR THEIR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PERMIT. THANK YOU, MR. WU. I AM ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT GOMEZ, AND WE'LL BE SHARING WITH YOU AN UPDATE ON LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY IS ONE OF THE LEAD AGENCIES FOR THE CALIFORNIA COLLABORATIVE FOR LEARNING ACCELERATION, WHICH SUPPORTS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED ON LITERACY. CCLA OFFERED A LEARNING ACCELERATION SUMMIT ON MARCH 16TH, WHICH HAD A KEY FOCUS AREA OF HIGH IMPACT TUTORING. DUE TO THE LEADERSHIP OF DOCTOR DEWAN, THE SCCOE HAS OBTAINED MULTIPLE GRANTS TO SUPPORT LITERACY WORK THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. WE ARE A REGIONAL HUB FOR THE LITERACY COACHES AND READING SPECIALIST GRANTS. SCCOE IS A PARTNER WITH HIGHER EDUCATION ON THE BILINGUAL TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM GRANT. THIS PARTNERSHIP HAS HELPED OVER 2800 GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS EARN THEIR SEAL OF BILITERACY. THANK YOU, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT GOMEZ. I AM ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT SHIPP AND WILL BE SHARING WITH YOU AN UPDATE ON SPECIAL EDUCATION COURT AND COMMUNITY SCHOOLS. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION COURT AND COMMUNITY SCHOOLS. WE NOW HAVE 27 LOCAL BUSINESSES PARTNERS WHO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS IN THE WORKABILITY PROGRAM. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IS A HIGH PRIORITY FOR ALL OUR PROGRAMS. OUR STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ENGAGE IN CIVIC ACTION PROJECTS, AND WE HAVE SEEN SUCCESS IN OUR EFFORTS WITH SEVEN STUDENTS IN OUR PROGRAMS EARNING THEIR SEAL OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THIS LAST YEAR. OUR EFFORTS FOR INCLUSION CAN BE WITNESSED IN THIS VIDEO CLIP, SHOWING HOW OUR STUDENTS AND THE EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR PARTICIPATED IN OUR WALDEN WEST PROGRAM. [01:05:06] THANK YOU, MISS SHIPP. I AM ASSOCIATE SUPERINTENDENT. DOCTOR BANDERAS WILL BE SHARING WITH YOU AN UPDATE ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE LITERACY. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AND CLIMATE LITERACY. THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY YOUTH CLIMATE INITIATIVE IS A GRANT FUNDED PROGRAM THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA NATURAL RESOURCES AGENCY, WITH MULTIPLE PARTNERSHIPS. THE WORK IN THIS PARTNERSHIP HAS BEEN TO GAIN YOUTH INPUT ON CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION THROUGH FOCUS GROUPS. I AM PLEASED TO INTRODUCE JENNIFER MUTCH, ROSSI CHEN AND PARVA MEFUTIA TO TELL YOU MORE ABOUT THIS WORK. HELLO. GOOD. OKAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH, DOCTOR VON DORIS, FOR THE INTRODUCTION. AND THANK YOU, DOCTOR DEWAN, PRESIDENT BERTA, AND ALL OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TRUSTEES FOR INVITING ME HERE TODAY TO SPEAK WITH YOU GUYS. MY NAME IS ROSIE CHEN, AND I AM A RECENT GRADUATE OF WILCOX HIGH SCHOOL IN THE SANTA CLARA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. AND I'M ALSO A MEMBER OF SILICON VALLEY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION. I'M HERE TO TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT A RECENT PROJECT CALLED THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY YOUTH CLIMATE INITIATIVE, OR SCCYCI. THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY YOUTH CLIMATE INITIATIVE IS A GRANT FUNDED PROGRAM THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA NATURAL RESOURCES AGENCY, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE. TEN STRANDS SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION, CLIMATE RESILIENT COMMUNITIES, SAN JOSE CONSERVATION CORPS AND CHARTER SCHOOL, THE FREMONT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT, SILICON VALLEY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION REGION FIVE EXPANDED LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS, AND THE TENACIOUS GROUP. SCCOE WORK IN THIS PARTNERSHIP HAS BEEN TO GATHER YOUTH INPUT ON CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION ACROSS THE COUNTY, WHICH WAS ACCOMPANIED ACCOMPLISHED BY HOLDING SEVERAL FOCUS GROUPS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OVER THE LAST TWO AND A HALF MONTHS, AND CURATING RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO INCREASE THE AWARENESS AND IMPROVE CLIMATE LITERACY. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF HELPING TO FACILITATE THESE FOCUS GROUPS BY MODERATING THE EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES PORTION. A FEW OF OUR FINDINGS FROM THE FOCUS GROUPS ARE THAT MOST STUDENTS FIRST LEARNED ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE IN ELEMENTARY OR MIDDLE SCHOOL THROUGH BASIC LESSONS ON WATER CONSERVATION, DROUGHT, POLLUTION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, AND THAT THEIR UNDERSTANDING DEEPENED OVER TIME THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS, WATCHING DOCUMENTARIES, OR LEARNING SPECIFIC UNITS IN SCIENCE CLASSES OR PERSONAL RESEARCH. STUDENTS ALSO DISCUSS THE PREFERENCE FOR HANDS ON ACTIVITIES FOR LEARNING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH PROJECTS LIKE SCHOOL GARDENS, COMPOSTING AND ENDANGERED SPECIES PRESENTATIONS. WATCHING ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTARIES AND PARTICIPATING IN CLUB MEETINGS ON CURRENT EVENTS WERE ALSO IMPACTFUL AND IN-DEPTH. STUDIES ON CARBON FOOTPRINTS, GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, AND THE BROADER IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE SOLIDIFIED THEIR UNDERSTANDING THROUGH SPECIFIC CLASSES SUCH AS BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES. AS PART OF THE EXTRACURRICULAR SECTION, I ALSO GOT A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR THOUGHTS ON LEARNING CLIMATE EDUCATION OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM, AND THERE WAS ENTHUSIASTIC SUPPORT FOR AN EXTRACURRICULAR BASED CLIMATE EDUCATION PROGRAM, WITH STUDENTS INTERESTED IN DIVING DEEPER INTO THE SCIENCE BEHIND CLIMATE CHANGE, THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON HUMAN HEALTH, AND THE IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SOCIETY AND HUMAN INTERACTIONS. THERE WAS ALSO AN EMPHASIS ON MAKING CLIMATE EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE, WHETHER THAT BE HAVING CLIMATE EDUCATION TAUGHT AT A CONVENIENT TIME, SUCH AS AT LUNCH, OR HAVING THEIR LEARNING BE COMPENSATED. THE GENERAL SENTIMENT IS THAT STUDENTS WANT CLIMATE EDUCATION, BUT THEY NEED SUPPORT TO DO SO. THE CORE PARTNERS IN THE INITIATIVE ALSO GATHERED INFORMATION ON ACADEMICS AND GREEN CAREERS. AND IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE YOUTH FOCUS GROUP FINDINGS, THIS CAN BE AVAILABLE ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY AND SUSTAINABILITY WEBSITE. AND LASTLY, SOME OF THE OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS THAT SCCOE IS PART OF IS PARTNERING WITH THE OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY AND RESILIENCE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT AND MENTORSHIP TO TWO YOUTH COMMISSIONERS, WHICH IS ONE OF THESE COMMISSIONERS, AS WELL AS SUPPORTING YOUTH WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CURRICULUM, AN ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY CURRICULUM, AND HAVING YOUTH PRESENT ON PANELS AND WORKSHOPS AND INVITING ME TO SPEAK HERE TODAY, AND THEN ALSO ATTEND OUR ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY SUMMIT, WHICH WE WILL SHARE MORE ABOUT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH, ROSIE, AND THANKS FOR BEING A GREAT LEADER FOR CLIMATE ACTION IN OUR COUNTY. SHE JUST HELPED LEAD AND PLAN AN AMAZING EVENT THIS LAST WEEKEND, THE SILICON VALLEY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION YOUTH LEADERSHIP SUMMIT AND INVITED ME TO BE PART OF THAT. SO THANK YOU. SO NEXT SLIDE PLEASE. WE'RE EXCITED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT TWO OF OUR DISTRICTS HAVE WON THE CALIFORNIA GREEN RIBBON AWARD THIS YEAR. SO SANTA CLARA UNIFIED AND MOUNTAIN VIEW WHISMAN. AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING WITH SANTA CLARA UNIFIED TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR THEIR SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY PLANS, WITH A FOCUS ON FOUR C'S CAMPUS [01:10:06] COMMUNITY, CURRICULUM AND CULTURE. WE'RE ALSO PARTICIPATING OR CO-FACILITATE, FACILITATING THEIR SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE, THEIR MEETINGS AND PROVIDING GUIDANCE ON STATE ADOPTED BILLS FOCUSED ON THE FOUR C'S. OUR GROWING GARDENS COMMUNITY PRACTICE IS IN ITS THIRD YEAR AND HAS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT SCHOOL GARDENS FOR OVER HALF OF OUR DISTRICTS. AND IN FIVE OF OUR SCC PROGRAMS AND OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS HAVE CREATED STRONG CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE COMMUNITY WITH TEACHERS, PARENTS, COMMUNITY-BASED PARTNERS, FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE, AND SCHOOL GARDEN VOLUNTEERS. AND OUR MEETINGS INCLUDE A LEARNING COMPONENT WITH TOPICS SUCH AS RESILIENCY, INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE, AND SHARING ABOUT THE RECENT GROWING SCHOOL GARDEN STATEWIDE SUMMIT, WHERE WE HAD A TEAM FROM SCCOE PRESENT. OTHER COMPONENTS ARE NETWORKING AND SHARING ABOUT SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES. AND I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT WE HAVE THREE FELLOWS FROM THE CALIFORNIA CLIMATE ACTION CORPS, WHICH IS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CALIFORNIA VOLUNTEERS FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE AND BAY AREA COMMUNITY RESOURCES. AND THEY'VE BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR WORK THERE, SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL GARDEN PROGRAMS, ESPECIALLY AT SUNOL AND HESTER. AND WE'LL BE EXPANDING THAT TO OTHER SITES. THEY'RE WORKING ON COMPOSTING PROJECTS, FOOD WASTE RECOVERY, AND LEVERAGING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS. IT'S OUR SECOND GROUP. WE'VE HAD THEM. WE'LL HAVE THEM UNTIL MID SEPTEMBER, AND WE WILL GET A NEW GROUP STARTING IN SEPTEMBER FOR A FULL YEAR. SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. AND LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO PURVA. HI. I'M A LITTLE SHORTER THAN ROSIE, SO I THINK THIS MIC ACTUALLY WORKS BETTER FOR ME. BUT ANYWAY. HI, I'M PURVA I'M CURRENTLY A RISING SENIOR AT CUPERTINO HIGH SCHOOL. I'M A MEMBER OF SILICON VALLEY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION, WHICH HELD THE SUMMIT THAT ROSIE MENTIONED EARLIER. AND I'M ALSO, AS SHE MENTIONED, ONE OF TWO YOUTH MEMBERS ON THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION. AND I'M ALSO FORTUNATE TO HELP OUT WITH MY SCHOOL DISTRICT'S CLIMATE COLLECTIVE TEAM, WHICH I'LL GET INTO A LITTLE BIT LATER. BUT FIRST, I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY SUMMIT THAT WE HAD AT SCCOE EARLIER THIS YEAR, AND THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN. WE HAD TWO REALLY AMAZING KEYNOTE SPEAKERS, BOTH DOCTOR KELLY LEE, WHO'S AN AUTHOR AND CLIMATE EDUCATION LEADER. SHE'S HELPED WITH A LOT OF REALLY GREAT CLIMATE LITERACY PROJECTS, AS WELL AS DIRECTOR OF CLIMATE RESILIENT COMMUNITIES AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERT VIOLET WOLF SIGNER. AND WE HAD A LOT OF OTHER HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS FROM YOUTH, EDUCATORS AND OTHER COMMUNITY PARTNERS, INCLUDING SILICON VALLEY CLEAN ENERGY, THE MINETA TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE, AND THE OPEN SPACE AUTHORITY. AND OVERALL, I THINK THE DAY WAS JUST REALLY, I GUESS, ENERGIZING IN THAT THERE WERE A LOT OF IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS HAD AROUND INTEGRATING, LIKE AN EQUITY PERSPECTIVE INTO ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. AND ROSIE ACTUALLY ALSO MODERATED A PANEL THAT I GOT TO SPEAK ON WITH A COUPLE OF OTHER YOUTH WHERE WE WERE TALKING ABOUT BRINGING CLIMATE EDUCATION TO CLASSROOMS BEYOND JUST ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE OR AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND INTEGRATING IT INTO BOTH STEM AND HUMANITIES CLASSES AS WELL. SO THAT WAS REALLY EXCITING. AND I'D ALSO LIKE TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE WORK THAT MY DISTRICT HAS DONE SINCE THEN. I MENTIONED I WAS PART OF MY DISTRICT CLIMATE COLLECTIVE. WE'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ON SOME REALLY EXCITING PROJECTS OVER THE SUMMER SUCH AS STUDENT LED EFFORTS SUCH AS WE HAVE A RECYCLING INITIATIVE THAT IS COMPLETELY STUDENT LED AND KIND OF ORGANIZED BY YOUTH WHICH WE'VE MANAGED TO SPREAD TO, TO MOST OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS IN OUR DISTRICT. AND WE ALSO ARE WORKING ON CLIMATE LITERACY CURRICULUM, AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, INTEGRATING IT INTO LIKE WRITING AN ESSAY IN AP LIT. YOU CAN MAKE THAT ABOUT CLIMATE, THINGS LIKE THAT, OR EXPLORING THE IMPACTS OF E-WASTE IN CHEMISTRY HONORS THINGS LIKE THAT. AND ONE LAST THING THAT I WANT TO MENTION, BECAUSE I KNOW I'VE BEEN TALKING FOR A WHILE, IS THAT WE ARE ALSO WORKING ON SORT OF MORE HANDS ON INITIATIVES, SUCH AS ONE THAT I'VE GOTTEN TO BE INVOLVED WITH, WHICH IS A DATA DASHBOARD THAT WE'RE PUTTING TOGETHER WITH OUR DISTRICT FACILITIES MANAGER, WHICH IS REALLY NEAT BECAUSE WE GET TO GO UP THERE AND KIND OF ANALYZE ENERGY DATA, LIKE DIRECTLY FROM THE DISTRICT, LIKE WE'RE LOOKING AT PG AND E BILLS, AND WE'RE TRYING TO UNDERSTAND OUR CARBON IMPACT OVER TIME AND FIGURE OUT WHERE WE CAN TRY TO REDUCE IT THROUGH STUDENT LED INITIATIVES OR OTHER FACILITIES UPGRADES THAT NEED TO BE MADE. SO YEAH. THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH, PURVA. AND AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP AT FREMONT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT AND AS A SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSIONER FOR THE COUNTY. FINALLY, I'D LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT AGAIN, GOING BACK TO SUNOL COMMUNITY SCHOOL. THEY ACTUALLY GOT TO PARTICIPATE IN A GREAT PROJECT CALLED STEAM THE STREETS. AND THAT WAS WHERE THE STUDENTS GOT TO WRITE SOME, SOME LYRICS AND SOME DID SOME VIDEO OF SHOWING THEIR CONNECTION TO GREEN CAREERS. [01:15:03] SO THAT WAS I THINK YOU WERE SHOWN THAT A FEW MONTHS AGO. I'M NOT SURE, BUT IF NOT, I'LL GET IT TO YOU. AND IT WAS REALLY COOL BECAUSE WE'VE ALSO BEEN WORKING WITH THEM ON SOME AQUAPONICS AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES ON THEIR CAMPUS. AND WE DID RECENTLY HAVE WE HAVE A GRANT FROM CAL FIRE AND WE DID SOME LEARNING AROUND URBAN HEAT ISLANDS. SO LEARNING ABOUT WHY TREE CANOPIES IMPORTANT ON CAMPUSES. FINALLY, I WANT TO SHARE MY APPRECIATION FOR ALL OF YOU. THE BOARD FOR SUPPORTING THIS WORK AND TO DOCTOR DEWAN AND OUR CABINET FOR SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE EDUCATION. THANKS SO MUCH. THANK YOU, MISS MAH, ROSIE AND PURVA FOR SHARING SUCH GREAT INFORMATION WITH US. UM ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT [INAUDIBLE] WILL BE SHARING WITH YOU AN UPDATE ON WORKFORCE PATHWAYS AND DIVERSIFICATION. THESE ARE THE BOARD ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS FOR WORKFORCE PATHWAYS AND DIVERSIFICATION. EDUCATION PREPARATION PROGRAM HAS BEEN ACTIVELY BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS TO SUPPORT OUR ENTIRE COUNTY TO INCREASE THE DIVERSITY IN OUR EDUCATOR PIPELINE, AND SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION HELD ITS ANNUAL RECRUITMENT EVENT ON MARCH 23RD, WHERE OVER 500 PARTICIPANTS BENEFITED FROM BREAKOUT SESSIONS AND RESOURCES SUPPORTING THEIR ENTRY INTO THE EDUCATION FIELD. THIS EVENT WAS DESIGNED TO ATTRACT DIVERSITY WITHIN THE WORKFORCE. THE STEP INTO EDUCATION EVENT WILL BE HELD ON AUGUST 17TH, WHICH IS NOT THIS SATURDAY NEXT SATURDAY. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, DOCTOR GILL. THE SCCOE HAS BEEN PURSUING FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIORITY AREAS, WHICH ARE GROUNDED IN YOUTH VOICE THROUGH ADVOCACY AND THE PURSUIT OF FUNDING, AS NOTED BY THE SCCBOE ON THEIR ADOPTED PRIORITIES, WE'RE DELIGHTED TO SHARE OUR SUCCESS WITH THESE ONE-TIME COMPETITIVE GRANT AWARDS. THE ITEMS LISTED IN THE NEXT FEW SLIDES WERE AWARDED DURING THE FOURTH QUARTER OF THIS CALENDAR YEAR. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ITEMS LISTED WITH AN ASTERISK DENOTE THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED AN INTENT TO AWARD LETTER BUT HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THE ACTUAL FUNDS. THE REVENUE ASSOCIATED WITH THESE AWARDS IS RESTRICTED TO BEING USED FOR SPECIFIED PURPOSES, AS DESCRIBED BY THE GRANTOR. THE SPECIFIED PURPOSES ARE ALIGNED TO OUR STRATEGIC PLAN AND THE BOARD PRIORITIES AND ALLOW US TO CONTINUE OUR EFFORTS TO ADVANCE EQUITY AND BE A PREMIER SERVICE PROVIDER. WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTAL GRANTS, THE SCCOE COULD NOT IMPLEMENT THE QUALITY WORK NEEDED TO SUPPORT OUR MISSION VISION GOALS, NOR THE SCCBOE ADOPTED PRIORITY AREAS. THIS SLIDE SHOWS THE SCCOE HAS SECURED FUNDING TOWARD EARLY LEARNING AND CARE, AND LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. ON SLIDE 37, WE SUMMARIZE THE GRANTS FOR WHICH WE'VE RECEIVED AN INTENT TO AWARD FOR EMPOWERING CHILD WELLNESS. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE ALL THE TEAM MEMBERS FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND EFFORT AS WE WORK TOGETHER THROUGH ADVOCACY AND THE PURSUIT OF FUNDING. AS YOU CAN SEE, WE CONTINUE TO SEEK GRANTS TO INCREASE THE CAREER PATHWAYS TOWARD A CAREER AND EDUCATION. THESE GRANT AWARDS HELP CREATE MULTIPLE AVENUES TOWARD AN EDUCATIONAL CAREER THAT FIT INTO CANDIDATES LIFESTYLES AND HELP US TO DIVERSIFY OUR WORKFORCE. THIS CONCLUDES OUR QUARTERLY REPORT. THANK YOU, DOCTOR JUAN, AND OUR CABINET, AS WELL AS ROSIE AND PURVA. I JUST WANT TO GIVE YOU A QUICK. THAT WAS REALLY GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN. IT'S ALWAYS GREAT TO HEAR FROM OUR STUDENTS AND ESPECIALLY SEEING YOU LEAD IN SUCH INCREDIBLE WAYS, NOT JUST FOR YOUR DISTRICTS, BUT FOR, YOU KNOW, OUR BROADER COMMUNITY. IT'S QUITE IMPRESSIVE, SO KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. I WILL OPEN IT UP TO TRUSTEES FOR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS. TRUSTEE CHON. YEAH, I JUST HAD A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT THE WORKFORCE PATHWAYS AND DIVERSIFICATION AT THE DO WE HAVE DATA ON THE TEACHER RECRUITMENT FAIR AND HOW MANY OF THEM WERE SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING POSITIONS WITHIN OUR COUNTY? AND THEN I WANTED TO KNOW IF WE HAVE LIKE I WAS REALLY HAPPY TO SEE THE EDUCATION PREPARATION PROGRAMS, ESPECIALLY FOR INCREASING DIVERSITY WITH OUR EDUCATORS. BUT ARE WE DOING MORE PARTNER PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO SUPPORT, LIKE OUR INTERN TEACHERS TO COME IN AND DO MORE TEACHER CREDENTIALING. SO IN THE EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM, WE DO SUPPORT INTERN TEACHERS. ACROSS THE DISTRICT. SOME DISTRICTS HAVE THEIR OWN PROGRAMS, BUT WE DO ALSO PROVIDE SUPPORT, AND WE DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE DATA ABOUT ALL THE TEACHERS [01:20:01] THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN HIRED BY DISTRICTS. BUT ANECDOTALLY, THE SUCCESS RATE IS QUITE HIGH. OKAY, THAT'S GOOD TO KNOW. TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN YOU, I JUST HAD A THOUGHT COME UP DURING THE PRESENTATION AND THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT PRESENTED AS WELL. AND SO YOU KNOW, EVERYONE KNOWS MY HEART'S IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY PRIORITY. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. SO I JUST HAD A COMMENT THERE. IS I KNOW THAT OUR SUPERINTENDENT WAS A LEAD WITNESS BECAUSE SO MUCH OF THIS WORK. SCHOOLS NEED FUNDING, RIGHT? AND SO I KNOW THE OFFICE HAS BEEN ADVOCATING FOR STATE FUNDING. AND SO OUR SUPERINTENDENT WAS A LEAD WITNESS ON YOU KNOW, THE MOST EXPANSIVE, CLIMATE RESILIENT SCHOOLS BILL. I THINK THIS WAS LAST YEAR NOW OR BUT I THOUGHT, I KNOW THAT THAT WITH THE BUDGET DEFICIT, THAT WILL BE TRICKY. BUT THOSE EFFORTS WILL CONTINUE. AND I THOUGHT IT'D BE A GREAT IDEA TO SEE IF SOME OF THE STUDENTS COULD PARTNER WITH SCCOE ON SOME OF THAT ADVOCACY. YOU KNOW, AND WITH YOUR GREAT GOVERNMENT RELATIONS TEAM YOU HAVE AND MAYBE GOING TO THE CAPITOL, IF THAT'S APPROPRIATE. BUT PROBABLY YOU'RE ALREADY TEN STEPS AHEAD OF ME, BUT I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE FUN. GREAT IDEAS. TRUSTEE MAH. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT BERTA. I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS. A LOT OF THESE. SORRY, GOT KIND OF A FROG IN MY THROAT. SOME OF THESE AREAS OF PRIORITIES FOR THE BOARD DON'T HAVE A LOT OF METRICS, WHICH IS KIND OF WHAT TRUSTEE CHON WAS KIND OF NOTICING. I WAS WONDERING IF THERE ARE SOME METRICS THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO AGAIN, NOT TODAY. NOW, BUT BE ABLE TO PROVIDE. SO, FOR INSTANCE, ON SLIDE 15 ON THE LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. THERE'S A DISCUSSION ABOUT EFFORTS TO CLOSE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT GAPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHICH IS LAUDABLE. BUT IF WE COULD JUST GET THE INFORMATION ACROSS THE COUNTY, THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL. I MEAN, EVEN, YOU KNOW, BEFORE AND AFTER KIND OF WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP OR HOW HAS THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP CHANGED? AND NOT NECESSARILY, YOU KNOW, DIRECTLY BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DO OR DON'T DO, BUT TO HAVE SOME METRICS THERE SO WE YOU CAN'T CONTROL WHAT YOU DON'T MEASURE. AND SO, FOR INSTANCE, ALSO UNDER LITERACY AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, THERE'S A DISCUSSION, THERE WAS A DISCUSSION OF THE CALIFORNIA COLLABORATIVE FOR LEARNING ACCELERATION AND THAT THERE WERE HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS APPROXIMATELY. I'M JUST KIND OF GIVE GIVE US A FEEL FOR THE NUMBERS. I BELIEVE THERE WERE IN MID 30S AT THE LAST CLA. WE DID ALSO HAVE A LITERACY SUMMIT HERE AT RITTER PARK THIS LAST WEEK AND THEN EARLIER IN THE SUMMER. THAT WAS VERY WELL ATTENDED AS WELL. ANOTHER 30 OR SO PEOPLE KIND OF THING EACH TIME. YEAH. IT WAS A PACKED HOUSE. GREAT. SO KIND OF JUST ALONG THE WAY IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO HAVE MORE SPECIFIC METRICS FOR, FOR A NUMBER OF THESE AREAS WHICH WERE, YOU KNOW, EXPANDING OR IMPROVING. HOW MUCH HAVE WE ACTUALLY GONE THROUGH. IT'D BE GREAT TO KNOW. AND THEN I ACTUALLY HAVE ANOTHER BUNCH OF QUESTIONS. I CAN WAIT FOR A SECOND ROUND IF THAT'S BETTER. ARE THERE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM TRUSTEES? THE FLOOR IS YOURS. OKAY. I'LL TRY TO BE EFFICIENT FOR THE GRANTS, WHICH ARE AWESOME. COULD WE GET A NOTE AGAIN? NOT NOW, BUT A NOTE MAY BE ATTACHED TO SAY WHICH OF THESE GRANTS ARE FEDERAL, STATE? PRIVATE. I MEAN, I SEE THAT, YOU KNOW, SBCF HAS SOME OF THE GRANTS. SO JUST TO GET A FEEL AS TO WHERE OUR, OUR GRANT MONEY IS COMING FROM, HOW MUCH OF IT IS, YOU KNOW, FEDERALLY FUNDED VERSUS STATE VERSUS PRIVATE OR PHILANTHROPIC. BUT THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS IS A GREAT PRESENTATION. TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN IN MY COMMENTS, I FORGOT TO THANK DIRECTOR MUCH WHO I WAS ABLE TO GO TO THE YOUTH CLIMATE SUMMIT ON THIS PAST WEEKEND TOO. AND SO, YOU KNOW, SHE'S AT EVERY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION EVENT I FORGET TO MENTION, BUT SHE'S ALWAYS THERE WITH THE STUDENTS. AND AGAIN, JUST APPRECIATE THE PRESENTATION. PERHAPS A COUPLE OF THINGS. [01:25:01] MAYBE JUST AS A GENERAL THINGS. AS WE LOOK TOWARDS THE NEXT QUARTERLY UPDATE, I WOULD BE REALLY INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE. SIMILAR TO MY COLLEAGUES HAVE MENTIONED THE DATA IN TERMS OF, I GUESS, PROGRESS OVER TIME AND A LOT OF THE IN ADDITION TO GRANT DOLLARS HOW FUNDING ALLOCATED WITHIN THESE PROGRAMS OR PRIORITY AREAS AND INITIATIVES AND MAYBE JUST SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THE PERCENTAGE OF OUR BUDGET THAT, YOU KNOW, AS THAT ALIGNS WITH THESE DIFFERENT PRIORITY AREAS. JUST THOUGHT, YOU KNOW, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT PRIORITIES UPDATE. AND THANK YOU AGAIN TO OUR STUDENTS AND DIRECTORS AND CABINET AS WELL. WE APPRECIATE IT. WE WILL GO TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM. [D. Overview on the Charter School Renewal Process] DOCTOR DEWAN, WILL YOU INTRODUCE THE NEXT ITEM PLEASE? OUR NEXT ITEM IS AN OVERVIEW ON THE CHARTER SCHOOL RENEWAL PROCESS FOR THIS ITEM. MEFULA FAIRLEY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CHARTER SCHOOLS, WILL PRESENT THIS TEN-MINUTE OVERVIEW OF THE BASICS OF CHARTER RENEWAL. GOOD AFTERNOON, PRESIDENT BERTA, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, SUPERINTENDENT DEWAN STAFF AND COMMUNITY. NEXT SLIDE. THE PURPOSE OF TONIGHT'S PRESENTATION IS TO REVIEW RENEWAL BASICS, INCLUDING SOME OF THE CHANGES MADE IN 2020 UNDER AB 1505 IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY. WE INCORPORATE THE LAW INTO THE FOLLOWING PROCESS. WHEN A CHARTER SCHOOL SUBMITS A COMPLETED RENEWAL PACKAGE WITH A SIGNED CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION, THE RENEWAL PETITION IS CONSIDERED SUBMITTED. SCCOE ACKNOWLEDGES RECEIPT OF THE RENEWAL PETITION AND GIVES THE CHARTER SCHOOL A STANDARD MOU FOR EXPECTED EXECUTION BEFORE THE DECISION HEARING WITHIN 60 CALENDAR DAYS. THE BOARD MUST HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING TO CONSIDER THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT FOR THE PETITION. DURING THIS TIME, STAFF BEGINS ITS ANALYSIS OF THE PETITION AND CONDUCTS A SITE VISIT AND INTERVIEWS WITH SCHOOL STAFF AND THEIR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. THE STAFF ANALYSIS IS POSTED 15 DAYS PRIOR TO THE DECISION AND WITHIN 90 CALENDAR DAYS OF SUBMISSION. THE BOARD ACTS TO RENEW THE OR DENY THE CHARTER PETITION. IF THE PETITION IS APPROVED, STAFF WILL NEGOTIATE AN ADDENDUM TO THE MOU TO ADD OR CORRECT INFORMATION RELATED TO BEST PRACTICES ON THE OVERSIGHT AND OPERATION OF THE CHARTER SCHOOL. IF THE PETITION IS NOT RENEWED, THE CHARTER SCHOOL MAY APPEAL TO THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION UNDER THE ABUSE OF DISCRETION STANDARD, AND THAT IS FOR EVERY CHARTER SCHOOL EXCEPT COUNTYWIDE CHARTER SCHOOLS SUCH AS ROCKETSHIP ALMA AND ROCKETSHIP BRILLIANT MINDS, WHO YOU WILL RECEIVE PETITIONS FROM LATER THIS YEAR. RENEWAL PETITIONS MUST HAVE REASONABLY COMPREHENSIVE DESCRIPTIONS OF ELEMENTS OF THE ELEMENTS REQUIRED IN A CHARTER SCHOOLS PETITION, AS WELL AS A REASONABLY COMPREHENSIVE DESCRIPTION OF ANY NEW REQUIREMENTS OF CHARTER SCHOOLS ENACTED INTO LAW AFTER THE CHARTER WAS ORIGINALLY GRANTED OR LAST RENEWED. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT CHANGED UNDER AB 1505 IS THAT CHARTER AUTHORIZERS MUST ALSO CONSIDER THE CHARTER SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE ON THE INDICATORS INCLUDED IN THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD WHEN EVALUATING A PETITION TO RENEW A CHARTER SCHOOL. AB 1505 CREATED THREE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES OR TIERS FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS. CHARTER SCHOOL TIERS ARE DETERMINED BY ITS PERFORMANCE ON THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD USING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA. SO CRITERIA ONE FOR DETERMINING A SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE TIER OR CATEGORY IS BASED ON SCHOOL WIDE PERFORMANCE LEVEL ON ALL STATE INDICATORS FOR THE TWO YEARS PRIOR TO RENEWAL, OR CRITERION TWO FOR DETERMINING A SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE. TIER OR CATEGORY IS BASED ON THE SCHOOL WIDE, THE SCHOOL'S SCHOOL WIDE STATUS AND THE STATUS OF ITS SPECIFIC STUDENT GROUPS ON THE ACADEMIC INDICATORS IN COMPARISON TO THE STATE AVERAGE FOR THE TWO YEARS PRIOR TO RENEWAL. FOR THE CURRENT CHARTER RENEWALS. CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN PLACED INTO ONE OF THE THREE TIERS BASED ON DATA FROM THE DASHBOARD FOR 2022 AND 2023. I WILL NOTE HERE THAT CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PUBLICLY POSTING THE DATA FILE THAT PROVIDES THE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES FOR THE CHARTER SCHOOLS. THE FILE FOR THE CURRENT YEAR HAS BEEN POSTED ON THE CDE WEBSITE, AND THE SCCBOE AUTHORIZED SCHOOLS UP FOR RENEWAL THIS YEAR FALL INTO EACH OF THE CATEGORIES. [01:30:01] SO, IN THE HIGH TIER, WE HAVE BULLETS. IN THE LOW TIER WE HAVE ALPHA JOSE HERNANDEZ AND THE THREE ROCKET SHIP SCHOOLS BEING COMING FOR RENEWAL THIS YEAR. ROCKET SHIP AMA, BRILLIANT MINDS AND SI SI PUEDE ALL FALL INTO THE MIDDLE TIER. DASS CHARTER SCHOOLS SUCH AS OPPORTUNITY YOUTH ACADEMY HAVE THEIR OWN RENEWAL CRITERIA AND ARE NOT ASSIGNED A PERFORMANCE CATEGORY. I WANT TO POINT OUT AT THIS POINT THAT THIS SLIDE HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A ONE PAGER, AND IT HAS SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. SO, SOME OF THE STUFF THAT I'M GOING TO SAY TO YOU IS NOT ON THE SLIDE, BUT IT IS ON THIS ONE PAGER. SO, THIS CHART SUMMARIZES THE RENEWAL ELIGIBILITY, THE CHARTER, POSSIBLE CHARTER TERM, THE CAUSES FOR DENIAL, AND SOME NOTES OF INTEREST FOR EACH OF THE THREE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES. HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR RENEWAL AND SHALL NOT BE DENIED FOR ACADEMIC REASONS. HAVING SAID THIS, I WANT TO BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR THAT A CHARTERING AUTHORITY MAY DENY RENEWAL OF A CHARTER SCHOOL IN ANY OF THE THREE PERFORMANCE TIERS. EVEN A HIGH PERFORMING CHARTER SCHOOL CAN BE DENIED. UPON FINDING THAT THE SCHOOL IS DEMONSTRABLY UNLIKELY TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM SET FORTH IN THE PETITION DUE TO SUBSTANTIAL FISCAL OR GOVERNANCE FACTORS, GOVERNANCE FACTORS, OR NOT SERVING ALL PUPILS WHO WISH TO ATTEND. IN MAKING THE DECISION TO DENY A HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOL, THE AUTHORIZER MUST PROVIDE AT LEAST 30 DAY'S NOTICE TO THE CHARTER SCHOOL OF THE ALLEGED VIOLATION, AND MUST ALSO PROVIDE THE CHARTER SCHOOL WITH A REASONABLE OPPORTUNITY TO CURE THE VIOLATION, INCLUDING A CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN PROPOSED BY THE CHARTER SCHOOL. THE CHARTERING AUTHORITY MAY THEN DENY RENEWAL ONLY AFTER MAKING EITHER OF THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS. THE CORRECTIVE ACTION PROPOSED BY THE CHARTER SCHOOL HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL, OR THE VIOLATIONS ARE SO SUFFICIENTLY SEVERE AND PERVASIVE AS TO RENDER A CORRECTIVE ACTION PLAN UNVIABLE. ONE OTHER THING TO NOTE ABOUT HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS IS THAT THEY ARE ONLY REQUIRED TO UPDATE THEIR CHARTER TO REFLECT ANY NEW CHANGES IN THE LAW, OR AS NECESSARY, TO REFLECT THE CURRENT PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE SCHOOL. LOW PERFORMING CHARTER SCHOOLS ARE PRESUMPTIVE DENIALS AND SHALL NOT BE RENEWED UNLESS THE AUTHORIZER FINDS THE SCHOOL IS MAKING MEANINGFUL STEPS TO ADDRESS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OR CAUSES OF LOW PERFORMANCE AS DOCUMENTED IN A WRITTEN PLAN, AND THE SCHOOL CAN USE VERIFIED DATA TO SHOW AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF PROGRESS FOR EACH YEAR IN SCHOOL, OR THE SCHOOL CAN DEMONSTRATE STRONG POST-SECONDARY OUTCOMES. UPON MAKING THESE FINDINGS, THE AUTHORIZER MAY RENEW A LOW PERFORMING SCHOOL, BUT ONLY FOR TWO YEARS. AND FINALLY, A SCHOOL IS CONSIDERED MIDDLE PERFORMING IF IT DOES NOT QUALIFY AS A HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOL OR AS A LOW PERFORMING SCHOOL. MIDDLE PERFORMING SCHOOLS CAN BE CAN BE DENIED FOR THE SAME REASONS THAT I JUST DESCRIBED FOR HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOLS. AND JUST AS A REMINDER, THOSE ARE SUBSTANTIAL FISCAL OR GOVERNANCE FACTORS OR NOT SERVING ALL STUDENTS MIDDLE PERFORMING SCHOOLS CAN ALSO BE DENIED. IF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING THREE THINGS ARE TRUE, THE SCHOOL HAS FAILED TO MEET OR MAKE SUFFICIENT PROGRESS TOWARDS MEETING STANDARDS THAT PROVIDE A BENEFIT TO THE STUDENTS, AND CLOSURE IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF STUDENTS AND THE DECISION PROVIDES GREATER WEIGHT TO ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. MIDDLE PERFORMING SCHOOLS MAY BE RENEWED FOR FIVE YEARS. AS STATED EARLIER, SCHOOLS MUST PROVIDE AN UPDATED PETITION AND INCLUDE EVIDENCE OF ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS PART OF THE RENEWAL PROCESS. THIS EVIDENCE INCLUDES CAASPP SCORES IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH FOR ALL STUDENTS, AS WELL AS FOR NUMERICALLY SIGNIFICANT STUDENT GROUPS. LPAC OR ENGLISH LEARNER SCORES, AND THE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE ON THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD AND VERIFIED DATA, WHICH YOU SEE ON THE SLIDE, IS DATA THAT MAY BE PROVIDED BY ANY CHARTER SCHOOL TO ITS AUTHORIZER FOR RENEWAL, BUT SPECIFICALLY BY MIDDLE AND LOW PERFORMING CHARTER SCHOOLS TO SUPPORT THEIR DEMONSTRATION OF ACADEMIC PROGRESS. THIS WILL OCCUR IF THE CAASPP AND DASHBOARD DATA DON'T SHOW ADEQUATE ACADEMIC PROGRESS. THE VERIFIED DATA COME FROM A LIST OF VALID AND RELIABLE ASSESSMENTS AND MEASURES ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND IMPLEMENTED BY THE CHARTER SCHOOL. SO, WHEN DISCUSSING LOW PERFORMING CHARTER SCHOOLS, I MENTIONED THEY MAY SUBMIT POST-SECONDARY OUTCOME DATA AS ANOTHER INDICATOR FOR CONSIDERATION IN THE CHARTER RENEWAL PROCESS. THIS SLIDE EXPLAINS WHAT THE DATA IS. WHAT DATA IS COLLECTED AND SUBMITTED FOR POST SECONDARY OUTCOMES. [01:35:07] ALL STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS, INCLUDING FINDINGS, MUST BE PUBLISHED AT LEAST 15 DAYS BEFORE THE DECISION IS MADE BY THE BOARD. THIS REPORT WILL BE PUBLISHED OR IN OTHER WORDS, POSTED ON THE SEC WEBSITE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE BOARD RECEIVES A COPY FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT. ADDITIONALLY, THE CHARTER SCHOOL AND THE AFFECTED DISTRICT ARE NOTIFIED OF PUBLICATION BY THE CHARTER SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT STAFF. SO JUST AS A REMINDER, YOU, ON FRIDAY WE WILL BE POSTING THE STAFF ANALYSIS FOR BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL, AND THAT WILL BE 15 DAYS BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR DECISION ON AUGUST 26TH. THE LAST THING I WANT TO LEAVE YOU WITH IS IS THE PROTOCOL FOR THE DECISION HEARING. THE AUTHORIZER IS REQUIRED TO GIVE EQUIVALENT TIME AND PROCEDURES TO THE CHARTER SCHOOL DURING THE DECISION HEARING. THEREFORE, BOTH CHARTER SCHOOL, THE CHARTER SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT STAFF AND THE CHARTER SCHOOL WILL BOTH BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A PRESENTATION AT THE HEARING. THE AFFECTED DISTRICT WHERE THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TIME TO COMMENT. THE BOARD WILL HEAR PUBLIC COMMENT AND ASK QUESTIONS OF THE PRESENTERS AND THEN DELIBERATE. AND FINALLY THE BOARD WILL TAKE ACTION ON THE CHARTER RENEWAL PETITION. AND THAT CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION. THANK YOU, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FAIRLEY. AND THIS IS REALLY TIMELY AS WE ARE KICK STARTING A WHOLE SERIES OF RENEWALS. SO, WE APPRECIATE THE PRESENTATION. TRUSTEES, DO WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? OKAY. WELL, I GUESS THAT MEANS WE'RE READY. SO I BELIEVE THE NEXT ITEM IS ALSO FROM YOU EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DOCTOR DEWAN. [E. Charter Schools Update] WOULD YOU LIKE TO INTRODUCE THAT ITEM? YES, THIS IS OUR CHARTER SCHOOLS UPDATE AND WE ANTICIPATE ABOUT THREE MINUTES FOR THIS ITEM. GOOD EVENING ONCE AGAIN. TONIGHT, I HAVE TWO ITEMS ON WHICH TO UPDATE YOU, AND THEY BOTH PERTAIN TO CHARTER SCHOOL RENEWALS. SO ALPHA JOSE HERNANDEZ, ON AUGUST 1ST SUBMITTED TO SCCOE A CHARTER RENEWAL PETITION, AND THE PETITION HAS BEEN POSTED ON THE SCO WEBSITE AND THE PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD AT THIS BOARD. SEPTEMBER 4TH MEETING. THE PUBLIC HEARING. THE HEARING. THE HEARING FOR THE. I'M SORRY. THE DECISION HEARING WILL BE HELD ON OCTOBER 16TH. THE NEXT TWO PETITIONS FROM ROCKETSHIP ALMA AND ROCKETSHIP BRILLIANT MINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SUBMITTED ON SEPTEMBER 3RD. BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL. AFTER THE JULY 17TH PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE BULLIS CHARTER SCHOOL RENEWAL PETITION, THE CHARTER SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT FOLLOWED UP WITH BULLIS THROUGH SUPERINTENDENT MAUREEN ISRAEL. WE SENT HER SEVERAL EMAILS, PLACED SEVERAL PHONE CALLS REGARDING YOUR QUESTIONS AND REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION. AND FINALLY, ON AUGUST 5TH, BULLIS SUBMITTED TO SCCOE SOME OF ITS MARKETING MATERIALS, WHICH WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE SUPERINTENDENT'S WEEKLY THIS FRIDAY. THOSE MATERIALS INCLUDE DIRECT MAILERS, ADS AND FLIERS AND ADDITIONALLY SUPERINTENDENT ISRAEL ALSO STATED THAT BULLIS WILL CONTINUE WHEN THEY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO SEE WHAT OTHER INFORMATION THEY CAN PROVIDE. AND THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT FOR THE EVENING. THANK YOU, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. TRUSTEES, WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I DID HAVE A CLARIFYING QUESTION. WHERE WAS ALL THE INFORMATION THAT TRUSTEES REQUESTED PROVIDED THEN? AND WILL WE BE RECEIVE THAT IN THE WEEKLY? NO. THE ONLY THING THAT WE RECEIVE SO FAR ARE THE MARKETING MATERIALS, WHICH WILL BE INCLUDED ON THE IN THE WEEKLY ON FRIDAY THIS FRIDAY. OKAY. AND WAS THERE A TIMELINE THAT WAS ASKED IN TERMS OF WHEN THESE MATERIALS. YES, WE I KNOW THE MOST RECENT TIMELINE THAT WE GAVE THEM WAS MONDAY THE FIFTH, WHICH IS THE DATE THAT THEY DID SEND US THE MARKETING MATERIALS. BUT THAT WAS, I THINK, THE SECOND DEADLINE THAT WE HAD ASKED THEM TO SUBMIT WITHIN. HAVE WE RECEIVED ANY INDICATION THAT THEY WILL BE SUBMITTING ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS? INITIALLY THEY SAID THAT THEY WERE WORKING ON GATHERING THE DOCUMENTS. BUT THEN THE LAST COMMENT THAT WE GOT IS, AS THEY FIND THE CAPACITY THEY'LL BE WORKING ON TO PROVIDE OTHER DOCUMENTS. SO, I ASSUME THEY'RE STILL WORKING TO GATHER THEM. THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE THE UPDATES. TRUSTEE. CHON. OKAY. TRUSTEE MAH. THANK YOU. I NOTICED ON OUR WEBSITE, UNDER THE CHARTER SCHOOL DEPARTMENT THAT YOU DO LIST THE SUBMITTED PETITIONS FOR RENEWAL, AND YOU [01:40:04] HAVE THE DATES FOR THE INITIAL HEARING. IT WOULD BE HELPFUL SINCE WE ALREADY KNOW FOR THE ONES THAT WE DO A DECISION DATE TO HAVE THE PUBLISHED DATE OF WHEN THE REPORTS COMING OUT JUST ON THE WEBSITE ALSO. OKAY. I THINK THAT THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR THE PUBLIC JUST TO KNOW, SINCE WE'RE ALL GOING TO FIND OUT THE SAME DAY ANYWAY. THANK YOU. TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN I YOU SAID THIS EARLIER, BUT WHEN IS THE REPORT FOR BULLETS COMING OUT? FRIDAY. FRIDAY. OKAY. WELL, IF THERE ARE NO OTHER QUESTIONS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. SO, POLICY COUNCIL MET TODAY, AND WE HAD JUST A QUICK REVIEW OF THE BOARD BYLAW 9323 ON MEETING CONDUCT. IT WAS JUST A DISCUSSION ITEM AND REVIEW. THE BOARD SUBCOMMITTEE CONSIDERED CHANGES TO BOARD POLICY 1312.3, UNIFORM COMPLAINT PROCEDURES AND BOARD POLICY 5132, DRESSING, GROOMING AND ALSO BOTH OF THOSE WERE UPDATES BASED ON LAW CHANGES AND GETTING THOSE IN ALIGNMENT. THOSE BOTH PASSED UNANIMOUSLY AND WILL COME TO THE BOARD FOR FIRST READING EITHER AUGUST 26TH OR SEPTEMBER 4TH. TRUSTEE CHON, TRUSTEE LARI, TRUSTEE MAH, TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN. ALL RIGHT. I'LL BE REALLY FAST, OVER THE WEEKEND PRESIDENT BERTA AND I MET WITH SOME STUDENT ADVOCATES FROM GEN UP, WHICH WAS REALLY AWESOME TO HEAR HOW OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE REALLY ADVOCATING FOR EDUCATIONAL POLICY. AND WE HAD SOME GOOD CONVERSATIONS, AND I FEEL LIKE THEY SAID THEY LEARNED FROM US, BUT WE LEARNED A LOT FROM THEM. AND PRESIDENT BERTA, I'M SURE YOU'LL TAG IN ON THAT AS WELL, BUT I WANTED TO JUST SHARE THAT WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO GET TO MEET WITH THEM AND THE INDIVIDUAL THAT INVITED US TO MEET WITH THEM WAS ACTUALLY T, WHO WAS OUR POET THAT WAS HERE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. SO JUST AGAIN APPRECIATE THE COUNTY OFFICE SUPPORTING T AND THEIR WORK AND FOR US TO ALSO MEET WITH GEN UP, THAT'S ALL. [01:50:06] OH, I ALSO WANTED TO THANK JENNA AND SANDHYA FOR HELPING ME MAKE MY OWN WOODEN PUZZLE IN THE MAKERSPACE, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT. TRUSTEE LARI. SO IN JULY 18TH, I CO-ORGANIZED AND CO-MODERATED A PANEL ON THE IMPACT OF HOUSING INSTABILITY AND HOUSING QUALITY ON A HEALTH FOR THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS BAY AREA. ACCORDING TO THE 2022-23 EDUCATIONAL CENSUS, 4452 STUDENTS IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY EXPERIENCED HOMELESSNESS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, WHICH WORKS OUT TO BE 1 IN 30 STUDENTS ACROSS K-12 IN THE COUNTY. ANOTHER SEGMENT OF THE STUDENTS LIVE IN HOUSING THAT IS POORLY CONSTRUCTED OR MAINTAINED, INCREASING EXPOSURE TO LEAD PAINT OR WATER CONTAMINATION, IMPACTING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, AND THE ABILITY TO SHOW UP IN SCHOOL. ON JULY 31ST, I ATTENDED WITH DOCTOR DEWAN THE JAMES RANCH YOUTH CENTER, LIBRARY AND RECREATION CENTER GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION, A JOINT INITIATIVE BY SCCOE AND THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY LIBRARY DISTRICT TO PROVIDE INCARCERATED YOUTH ACCESS TO LIBRARY SERVICES. THE CENTER IS REALLY A WONDERFUL ENVIRONMENT, WITH A VAST COLLECTION OF BOOKS, A PING PONG, AND A POOL TABLE. WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO THE YOUTH COUNCIL MEMBERS TO DISCUSS THEIR FAVORITE BOOKS, AND THE POSITIVE ROLE BOOKS HAVE PLAYED IN THEIR LIVES AFTER INCARCERATION, THEY SHARED THAT THEY DEVELOPED A LOVE OF READING BECAUSE OF THE ACCESS TO LIBRARY SERVICES, WHICH WAS SOMETHING THE STUDENTS DID NOT HAVE GROWING UP. ONE OF THE YOUTH COUNCIL MEMBERS SHARED THAT HE GREW UP WITH NO FOOD IN THE FRIDGE AND NO ELECTRICITY. ON AUGUST 1ST, TRUSTEE MAH AND I VISITED THE RIDER PARK EARLY LEARNING CENTER PROJECT, WHICH IS NEARING COMPLETION. IT IS FUNDED BY THE INCLUSIVE EARLY EDUCATION EXPANSION PROGRAM GRANT AWARDED ABOUT AWARDED BY THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. WE SAW THE VERY INVITING THREE CLASSROOMS AND CRIB ROOM FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES, THE NURSING ROOM, THE SEPARATE KITCHENS FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF, AND THE DELIGHTFUL SENSORY STATIONS FOR STUDENTS. IT WAS APPARENT FROM THE TOUR THAT A LOT OF THOUGHT AND EFFORT HAS GONE INTO DEVELOPING THE FACILITY. AND THANK YOU TO EVERYONE AT SCCOE WHO WORKED ON THIS WONDERFUL PROJECT. AND THAT'S IT FOR MY REPORT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, TRUSTEE. ARE THERE ANY OTHER REPORTS? TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN. THANK YOU. SO, I MENTIONED EARLIER ON SATURDAY I ATTENDED THE SILICON VALLEY YOUTH CLIMATE ACTION ANNUAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT, AND THE COUNTY OFFICE OF ED HAD A PRESENCE THERE WITH DIRECTOR MUCH. AND YOU HEARD FROM SOME OF THE STUDENTS. AND THEN ALSO ON AUGUST 1ST I WENT TO OR. NO, THIS WAS THIS WAS ON SATURDAY AS WELL. THIS WAS AUGUST 3RD. I WENT TO A TOUR OF A FAMILY CHILDCARE CENTER, AND IT WAS A COALITION OF FAMILY CHILD CARE PROVIDERS IN ACROSS THE BAY AREA. AND SO, DOCTOR DEWAN PRESENTED THERE, AND ALSO RAQUEL DIETRICH FROM OUR CHILDCARE RESOURCE AND REFERRAL PROGRAM PRESENTED. AND FOLKS ASKED A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND I FELT LIKE THEY FELT REALLY HEARD IN AND WE KNOW THAT A LOT OF FAMILY CHILD CARE PROVIDERS ARE NOT DOING AS WELL AS THEY HOPED TO BE WITH JUST, YOU KNOW, DECLINING ENROLLMENT AND DIFFERENT MEASURES THAT THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH. SO, I KNOW THE STAFF WAS VERY OPEN TO TALKING WITH THEM. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND THEN WITH THIS SAME COALITION, I HAD A COUPLE ZOOM MEETINGS WITH STAFF AND DOCTOR DEWAN JUST TO HEAR MORE FROM OUR FAMILY CHILDCARE PROVIDERS. AND THEN I ACTUALLY MISSED THE MEETING YESTERDAY, BUT DOCTOR DEWAN AND I THINK DOCTOR BANDURAS MET WITH GURU YELLA SWARUP, WHO I MENTIONED LAST TIME HAS THE APP THAT THEY ARE DEVELOPING FOR STUDENTS. AND I THINK THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE A FOLLOW UP MEETING AS WELL. SO HE WAS SUPER APPRECIATIVE. AND THEN I HAD A FEW MEETINGS WITH STUDENTS FROM HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL. THEY HAVE THEIR FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA CHAPTER, FBLA, AND SO THEY THE DIFFERENT STUDENTS HAVE DIFFERENT COMMUNITY PROJECTS THEY'RE WORKING ON. ONE WAS ON ALZHEIMER'S AND DEMENTIA. AND SO, IT WAS GREAT TO SPEAK TO THOSE STUDENTS. THANK YOU. MOM. THANK YOU. I REALLY DID ENJOY ALSO, ALONG WITH TRUSTEE LARI, THE TOUR OF THE EARLY LEARNING FACILITY THAT'S UNDER CONSTRUCTION. [01:55:05] YOU CAN SEE PART OF IT OUT IN THE PARKING LOT HERE. WE WERE ALL GIVEN THESE GREAT CONSTRUCTION HATS TOO. SO, IT'S LIKE I HAVE SOMETHING TO PROTECT MY HEAD IN PICKLEBALL. AND THEN I ALSO ATTENDED THE CHALLENGE TEAM, WHICH IS THE NORTH COUNTY ORGANIZATION THAT MEETS EVERY MONTH WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT COUNSELORS, MENTAL HEALTH, ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT YOUTH. AND THEY HAD AN EXCELLENT SPEAKER TALKING ABOUT SEX TRAFFICKING OF CHILDREN, WHICH IS HAPPENING MUCH MORE THAN MANY OF US SUSPECT OR ARE AWARE OF. BUT THERE WAS A WONDERFUL SPEAKER WITH AN ORGANIZATION UP IN MARIN COUNTY WHO'S REALLY MAKING PEOPLE AWARE OF WHAT IT IS, CERTAINLY HOW HORRIBLE IT IS. BUT AND WORKING ON WAYS TO, TO HELP REDUCE AND FILL IN THE GAPS FOR KIDS WHO ARE, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE YOUR KIDNAPED KIDS, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE THE ACCOMPANIED MINORS WHO ARE BEING ACCOMPANIED BY THE WRONG PERSON OR KIDS WHO ARE JUST MISSING. AND WHEN THEY'RE MISSING, WE DON'T REALLY HAVE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT A GOOD WAY TO TRACK THEM OR WATCH THEM UNTIL THEIR, YOU KNOW, FILE A MISSING CHILD REPORT OR SOMETHING LIKE AMBER ALERT. BUT BY THAT TIME, IT'S ALREADY KIND OF TOO LATE. SO, THIS WAS A VERY, VERY GOOD SPEAKER WHO SAID THAT SHE WOULD BE ABLE TO COME AND SPEAK ANY TIME IF WE WANT TO EDUCATE MORE PEOPLE ABOUT IT. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. TRUSTEE MAH. ARE THERE ANY OTHERS? I WILL JUST QUICKLY SHARE. IN ADDITION TO THE GEN UP MEETING THAT I WAS ABLE TO JOIN WITH TRUSTEE CHON. I REALLY WANT TO THANK MISS SAINI, DIRECTOR CALDWELL, MR. CAMILLERI AND DOCTOR DEWAN. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY EARLIER THIS WEEK TO VISIT BLUE RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL AND SHARE ABOUT MY EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA, AND SPECIFICALLY SOME OF THE FORKLIFT FOOTAGE, SINCE THAT'S PART OF THE CERTIFICATION THAT THEY EARN. AND THANKS TO THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AND LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS, THEY ACTUALLY SENT ME SOME VR HEADSETS FOR THE STUDENTS TO VIEW AND EXPERIENCE IMMERSIVE FOOTAGE OF THE WILDLIFE, YOU KNOW, THE ICE, THE OCEAN AND THE JOURNEY TO GET TO ANTARCTICA. AND IT WAS JUST REALLY INCREDIBLE TO SEE HOW ENGAGED OUR STUDENTS WERE. AND YOU KNOW, ASKING GREAT QUESTIONS AND, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY REALLY THINKING ABOUT WHERE THEY WANT TO EXPLORE AND THE TYPE OF CAREER THAT THEY WANT TO PURSUE. SO I JUST AGAIN, WANT TO THANK EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR THAT OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT. [A. The superintendent may give a report on any activities related to her duties.] AND WITH THAT, WE WILL GO TO OUR SUPERINTENDENT REPORT. DOCTOR DEWAN. YES. THANK YOU. SO FIRST I WANT TO REINTRODUCE DOCTOR KULWINDER GILL THE NEW ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR PERSONNEL SERVICES AND WELCOME HER. I'VE INTRODUCED HER AT A COUPLE OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS AT WHICH SHE WAS NOT IN ATTENDANCE. SO, I PROMISED HER THAT I WOULD INTRODUCE HER AGAIN THIS EVENING WHILE SHE IS HERE. PRESENT. SO OFFICIALLY AGAIN, WELCOME TO THE TEAM. AND I ALSO WANTED TO JUST SHARE AN UPDATE THAT WE'RE CONTINUING TO WORK WITH OUR LABOR PARTNERS ON OUR LABOR MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE. WE HAD A MEETING RECENTLY WHERE WE INVITED ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO THE TEAM AND REVIEWED SOME OF THE KEY LEARNINGS. AND AS THE FOUNDATION OF THAT INITIATIVE, THE COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND THE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTY EDUCATORS COMPLETED NEGOTIATIONS AND HAVE AGREED TO ADD A FLAT SALARY ON SCHEDULE INCREASE OF $3,237, AND THAT IS RETROACTIVE TO JULY 1ST, 2024. A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS. ON JULY 31ST, I WAS GRATEFUL TO ATTEND THE GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION OF THE JAMES RANCH YOUTH CENTER LIBRARY, WHICH IS A SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION OVER THE LIBRARY THAT ALREADY EXISTED THERE. AND I WAS JUST REALLY HONORED TO HAVE TRUSTEE LARI BE THERE. AND TO HEAR DIRECTLY FROM THE STUDENTS ABOUT HOW IMPACTFUL THE LIBRARY AND THE SUPPORT FROM THE LIBRARIANS AND STAFF HAVE BEEN TO INCREASING THEIR LITERACY. AND THE STUDENTS, THEY SPOKE VERY ARTICULATELY ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE BOOKS. THEY HAD LEARNED TO DO BOOK TALKS, AND THEY WERE MARKETING THE BOOKS THAT THEY ENJOYED. AND THEY ENGAGED IN CONVERSATION WITH US ABOUT BOOKS THAT WE WOULD RECOMMEND TO THEM. [02:00:01] SO IT WAS JUST A REALLY DELIGHTFUL EVENT AND A TRUE CELEBRATION AS WELL OF ALL THE PARTNERSHIPS ON AUGUST 1ST. AS HAS BEEN MENTIONED, WE HOSTED THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER HARD-HAT TOUR AS WE ARE ABOUT 70% OR SO COMPLETE ON THE PROJECT. WE WILL, OF COURSE, WHEN IT IS COMPLETE TO A RIBBON CUTTING AND THAT WILL INVITE THE BOARD TO AS WELL. BUT I WANTED TO PROVIDE THE BOARD WITH A COPY OF THE HANDOUT THAT WE USED AT THE HARD HAT TOUR THAT TELLS A BIT ABOUT THE PROJECT ITSELF, AND ON THE BACK SIDE IS A FLOOR PLAN OF THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER. SO YOU CAN GET A SENSE WE'LL BE SERVING INFANTS ALL THE WAY UP TO FIVE YEAR OLDS. ON AUGUST 2ND, I WELCOMED STAFF MEMBERS BACK AT THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES DIVISION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY AT THE SAN JOSE CONVENTION CENTER. IT WAS A TRULY INSPIRING DAY. THE EVENT HAD ATTENDANCE FROM OVER A THOUSAND OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS AND THE SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND MANY OTHERS. SUPPORT CAME FROM DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS AND DIVISIONS THROUGHOUT THE AGENCY. WE HAD A RESOURCE FAIR KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SESSIONS. AND OUR VERY FAVORITE AND FAMOUS BAND, THE DREAM ACHIEVERS, CAME AND ALSO PERFORMED FOR THE FOR THE GROUP. I WANT TO GIVE HUGE KUDOS TO THE TEAM THAT PLANNED THAT, WHICH INCLUDED REPRESENTATIVES FROM OUR LABOR PARTNERS, OUR EMPLOYEES AND MANAGEMENT WHO PLANNED THAT DAY. THE SAME MORNING, WE HOSTED A STEM SHOP KIT BUILDING EVENT HERE AT RITTER PARK IN PARTNERSHIPS WITH SYNOPSIS FOUNDATION AND THE STEM KIT BUILD PROVIDES SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND CLASSROOM SUPPLIES TO EVERY FIRST YEAR TEACHER IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY. SO, THEY ALL ARE GETTING THIS AMAZING KIT FULL OF RESOURCES AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES. AND WE HAD A NUMBER OF LEADERSHIP TEAM MEMBERS WHO VOLUNTEERED TO HELP ASSEMBLE THE KITS ALONG WITH VOLUNTEERS. FROM SYNOPSIS. YESTERDAY, AS WAS MENTIONED, I WAS JUST REALLY HONORED TO JOIN PRESIDENT BERTA AS SHE PRESENTED ABOUT HER ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION TO STUDENTS AT BLUE RIDGE. AND I HAD A COUPLE OF TAKEAWAYS. ONE WAS THAT THE STUDENTS WERE REALLY MAKING CONNECTIONS TO THEIR CAREERS. AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO EARN A FORKLIFT CERTIFICATE. SO THEY GOT TO SEE IN REAL LIFE HOW ADULTS WERE EARNING A LIVING AND GETTING TO DO AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE USING FORKLIFT SKILLS. AND THEY ALSO LEARNED ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE CHEF ON THE BOAT. AND MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE LEARNING CULINARY SKILLS AS WELL AND HAVE THAT AS A GOAL. JUST ONE QUICK REMINDER. THE CSBA COUNTY BOARD MEMBER SERVICES CONFERENCE IS COMING UP IN SEPTEMBER. WE HAVE REGISTERED A COUPLE OF TRUSTEES, BUT PLEASE DO LET ME KNOW VIA EMAIL IF YOU'D LIKE TO ATTEND SO WE CAN GET YOU REGISTERED. THAT CONCLUDES MY REPORT AND THE DATE IS SEPTEMBER 13TH TO 15TH AND IT'S IN MONTEREY. THANK YOU, DOCTOR DEWAN. THIS BRINGS US TO ITEM 11 OR INFORMATION ITEMS. [A. Future Agenda Items] WILL YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE THIS ITEM, DOCTOR DEWAN. THE ONLY THING THAT WE HAVE TO SHARE ON THIS ONE IS THAT WE CONTINUE TO UPDATE THE TABLE. AND WE DID MAKE SOME UPDATES SINCE THE LAST MEETING. TRUSTEE CHON. THANK YOU. I JUST WANTED TO REMIND THE AGENDA ITEM THAT I BROUGHT FORWARD ABOUT OUR EMPLOYEES, ORGANIZATIONS, OUR BARGAINING UNITS, AND WORKING. I KNOW WE'RE WORKING ON ON THAT, SO I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE STILL FOLLOWING UP AND SEEING HOW WE CAN ADD THAT STANDING AGENDA ITEM. I ALSO DID WANT TO REQUEST IN ORDER TO SUPPORT AND UPLIFT OUR INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES, IF WE COULD BEGIN STARTING OUR BOARD MEETINGS WITH THE LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT. AND OF COURSE, GOING THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A YOU KNOW, PROPER ONE AND IN REPRESENTATIVE OF THIS AREA. WELL, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS AREA OR SANTA CLARA COUNTY I, YOU KNOW, WORKING WITH THE RIGHT PARTNERS IN ORDER TO DEVELOP ONE. BUT I WOULD THINK THAT WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR US TO DO THAT, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE WE DEVELOPED THAT TASK FORCE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO NOW. BUT IF WE COULD START THAT WORK, THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL. TRUSTEE CHON. TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN. THANK YOU. [02:05:01] I WANTED TO THANK STAFF AND PRESIDENT BERTA FOR ADDING THE EDUCATION BOND ON THE AGENDA. AND I WANTED TO SECOND TRUSTEE CHON'S ITEM ABOUT HAVING AN ITEM FOR OUR BARGAINING UNITS ON THERE. AND SO I WAS, AFTER TALKING TO TRUSTEE CHON SHE SHOWED ME HOW THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY BOARD OF ED HAS THAT. SO I WAS LOOKING AT THEIR AGENDA. SO, I THINK THAT'S SOMETHING WE CAN SORT OF REPLICATE. WHICH WOULD BE GREAT. THANK YOU. THEIR COMMENTS OR REQUESTS FROM TRUSTEES. TRUSTEE MAH. SORRY. ACTUALLY, I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I WANTED TO ASK A QUESTION ABOUT ONE OF THE CONSENT ITEMS. ITEM 12. SO ONCE WE'RE DONE WITH FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS, I DON'T WANT TO JUST GO IMMEDIATELY TO ADJOURNMENT. THANK YOU. SO, WE WILL BE AT ITEM. WELL, WE CAN GO THERE NOW. WHAT? WHICH ITEM IS IT? SO MY QUESTION IS REGARDING 12 A, I'M SORRY, 12 B, CONTRACTS OVER $250,000. I SAW THAT THERE'S A CONTRACT HERE WITH WEST ED FOR DATA COLLECTION AND PROGRAM EVALUATION FOR STATEWIDE RESIDENCY, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER, SR TAC. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S A FAST WAY TO SAY THAT. SO AT $1.2 MILLION, WHAT? WHAT EXACTLY IS THAT? WELL, THE STATEWIDE RESIDENCY TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE CENTER IS THE GRANT THAT OUR OFFICE HAS RECEIVED TO MANAGE AND LEAD THE STATEWIDE WORK ON CREATING RESIDENCY PROGRAMS, HELPING SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND COUNTY OFFICES OF EDUCATION CREATE TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAMS AND MODELS. AND ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE GRANT IS THAT WE HAD TO HAVE A RESEARCH PARTNER WHO WOULD CONDUCT AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW, HELP WITH THE DATA COLLECTION AND HELP EVALUATE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THAT GRANT AND THAT. AND THE GRANT APPLICATION AND IN THE APPROVAL OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION BEING THE STATEWIDE LEAD IT WAS A REQUIREMENT FOR WEST ED TO BE THAT PROVIDER. AND THE COST OF THAT IS COVERED BY THE GRANT FUNDS. SO THAT'S THE 1.2 MILLION. BUT THEN IN ADDITION, THERE'S ALSO THE CALIFORNIA DEDICATED TO EDUCATION FOUNDATION, WHICH ALSO IS PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR THE SAME. SO THAT'S AN ADDITIONAL 3.6 MILLION. AND THAT ONE THE CALIFORNIA DEDICATED TO EDUCATION FOUNDATION. IS THAT A NONPROFIT? I MEAN, THAT'S PRIVATE OR IS THAT THAT'S NOT A I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S A NONPROFIT. I'M NOT SURE. OKAY. SO THOSE TWO IT LOOK LIKE ARE PRETTY HEFTY. THAT'S AWESOME. BUT THEY I SEE THAT THEIR SOLE SOURCE BECAUSE THAT'S A REQUIREMENT OF THE GRANT I SEE THAT WAS ALL MY QUESTIONS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THE NEXT THIS BRINGS US TO ADJOURNMENT. THE NEXT SANTA CLARA COUNTY REGULAR MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 26TH, 2024 AT 530. MAY I HAVE A MOTION TO ADJOURN? SO MOVED. MOVED BY TRUSTEE. CHON. DO I HAVE A SECOND? I'LL SECOND THE MOTION. TRUSTEES, PLEASE VOTE IN BOARD DOCS. VERBAL AYE FROM TRUSTEE SREEKRISHNAN. VERBAL AYE FROM TRUSTEE. DI SALVO. VERBAL AYE FROM TRUSTEE LARI. AND THAT MOTION CARRIES UNANIMOUSLY. WE ARE NOW ADJOURNED AT 11:10 P.M.. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR STAFF WHO ARE STILL HERE AS WELL. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
