THERAPISTS LIKE ME HAVE TIME TO DO MEANINGFUL WORK THAT ISN'T MEASURED BY STUDENT NUMBERS OR BY THEIR IEP, LIKE ENSURING THAT CLASSROOMS HAVE APPROPRIATE SENSORY AND MOTOR EQUIPMENT, DESK AND CHAIRS ACTUALLY FIT OUR STUDENTS AND THAT OUR PARENTS HAVE TOOLS TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILD'S DEVELOPMENT. IT ALLOWS ME TO SPEND MEANINGFUL TIME BEYOND THE DIRECT SERVICES TO SUPPORT MY STUDENTS, SPECIAL EDUCATION AND HEADSTART STAFF, AND THEIR HEAD START PEERS IN HEAD START INCLUSION. THE PROPOSED LAYOFFS WOULD NOT ONLY AFFECT ME, BUT ALSO THE PEOPLE WE SERVE. OUR WORKLOADS HAVE INCREASED SINCE I STARTED WITH SCCOE NEARLY 20 YEARS AGO, WHILE THE STUDENTS' NEEDS HAVE INCREASED. OTS AND PTS WERE RECENTLY THE ONLY STAFF EXCLUDED FROM SPEECH CAMP, DESPITE OUR ADVOCACY AND THE ADVOCACY OF THE SPEECH THERAPISTS AND THE INCLUSION OF PSYCHOLOGISTS WHO PRIMARILY EVALUATE AND PROVIDE LITTLE DIRECT SERVICE. IT WAS NO SURPRISE THAT SEVERAL MONTHS LATER WHEN WE RETURN TO IN PERSON INSTRUCTION, WE WERE NOW SEVERELY SHORT STAFFED AND EFFECT THAT HAS LINGERED NEARLY FIVE YEARS LATER. WHILE ECONOMISTS SOUNDED THE ALARM THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC, CALIFORNIA SHOWED RESILIENCE AND INVESTED AN UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH REVENUE INTO EDUCATION AND STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLNESS. AN EXAMPLE I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU, AT A PARTICULAR SCHOOL SITE, FURNITURE WAS BOUGHT FOR APPROXIMATELY $200,000. THESE ARE LITTLE CHILDREN, AND THEY BOUGHT CHAIRS THAT HAD ROLLING WHEELS. OF COURSE, THE LITTLE KIDS DON'T ENJOY WHEELS, AND HENCE THE WHEELS HAD TO BE REMOVED FROM THE CHAIRS. WHAT THEN HAPPENED WAS THAT THE CHAIRS ARE NOW TOO LOW FOR THE TABLES, THUS RENDERING THE TABLES AND THE CHAIRS UNUSABLE. THIS IS THE MISMANAGEMENT THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, AND THIS IS WHERE MONEY COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED, AND EVERY PENNY SAVED IS A JOB SAVED. SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS ARE NOT A PART OF THIS DATA AS THOSE PROGRAMS ARE INCLUDED IN THEIR DISTRICTS OF RESIDENTS. THE FIRST LIGHT IS ON CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM LOOKS AT GRADES TK-8 BASED ON CUMULATIVE ENROLLMENT. A STUDENT IS DEEMED CHRONICALLY ABSENT IF THEY ARE ABSENT 10% OR MORE OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS FOR WHICH THEY ARE ENROLLED. KEEP IN MIND STUDENTS MAY HAVE MORE RIGHT NOW IN TERMS OF ABSENCES BECAUSE WE'RE MIDWAY POINT AND WE ALSO ARE GOING THROUGH FLU AND COVID SEASON. IF THERE ARE NO MORE ABSENCES DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR, THEY ACTUALLY WILL COME OUT OF THAT CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM CATEGORY. OUR SUSPENSION RATE INDICATOR CONSIDERS THE PERCENT OF STUDENTS WITH AN AGGREGATE SUSPENSION OF AT LEAST ONE FULL SCHOOL DAY. THE SUSPENSION RATE INCLUDES ALL STUDENTS, TK-12, ENROLLED AT LEAST ONE DAY. THE RATE INCLUDES IN SCHOOL AND OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION. OUR SUSPENSION RATE FOR 23-24 WAS 6.6%. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE WAS AN INCREASE, WHICH MEANS WE REMAIN IN THE RED INDICATOR. OUR GOAL FOR THREE YEARS IS A 0% SUSPENSION RATE. OUR GRADUATION RATE INDICATOR IS BASED ON BOTH THE COMBINED FOUR AND FIVE YEAR GRADUATION RATES. SINCE OUR PROGRAMS ARE CONSIDERED DASHBOARD ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS OR DOS SCHOOLS, THE DASHBOARD GRADUATION RATE IS BASED ON BOTH THE COMBINED FOUR AND FIVE YEAR GRADUATION RATE INSTEAD OF THE FOUR YEAR RATE ALONE. STUDENTS WHO EARNED HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE ARE NOT CONSIDERED PART OF THE GRADUATION RATE. THE GRADUATION RATE FOR 23-24 WAS 71.9%, WHICH WAS AN IMPROVEMENT FROM THE PRIOR YEAR, THUS THE COLOR STATUS IS YELLOW. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE AN 80% GRADUATION RATE OR HIGHER. THE COLLEGE AND CAREER INDICATOR SHOWS THAT FOR 23-24, 6% OF SENIORS GRADUATED PREPARED. THE PERCENTAGE RATE WAS LOW AND DECLINED FROM PRIOR YEAR, THUS THE STATUS REMAINED RED, THE LOWEST PERFORMANCE. FOR ANY AREA REGISTERED AS RED, WE DO HAVE SPECIFIC GOALS WRITTEN INTO THE LCAP, [00:40:03] WHICH IS A NEW REQUIREMENT FOR THIS YEAR. OUR ENGLISH LEARNER PROGRESS INDICATOR IS ALSO IN THE RED. THE GOVERNOR BECAME THE SUPERINTENDENT OF MY SCHOOL DISTRICT, AND HE SHUT DOWN MY SCHOOLS. I WAS SO ANGRY." HE SAID ALSO THAT HE DIDN'T BELIEVE IN EQUITABLE GRADING POLICIES AND INSTEAD BELIEVED IN EDUCATIONAL CAPITALISM. WHEN IT CAME TO SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, DR. THEY CREATED A DIFFERENT CLUB SPECIFICALLY FOR THESE FAMILIES. THEY FELT COMFORTABLE COMING TO IT. NOW THAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR, THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE COMING TO THE GENERAL HOME SCHOOL CLUB, AND THEY'RE ALL WORKING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY, AND THE DATA SHOWED THAT THIS IS HELPING ALL THE STUDENTS WITH THEIR ACHIEVEMENT GAP BECAUSE THEY'RE SEEING REPRESENTATION OF THEIR FAMILIES WHO WERE AFRAID TO BE THERE BEFORE.
