TODAY IS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH, 2024, AND THE TIME IS 5:00 PM.

I AM MAIMONA AFZAL BERTA, PRESIDENT OF THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, AND I WILL PRESIDE OVER THIS MEETING.

THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION RECOGNIZES TEN SANTA CLARA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION EMPLOYEES EACH YEAR FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO STUDENTS, PARENTS, COWORKERS, AND CUSTOMERS.

MARICELA ORNELAS, A TEACHER AT SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION IN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WITHIN THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE DIVISION, IS THE NOVEMBER EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH. MARICELA ORNELAS HAS WORKED AT THE SCCOE FOR JUST OVER THREE AND A HALF YEARS.

BEFORE JOINING THE SCCOE, MARICELA WAS A SWIM INSTRUCTOR FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AT THE TIMPANI CENTER.

SHE THEN TRANSITIONED TO BECOMING A BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONIST AT THE CUPERTINO UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SHE RECEIVED HER SPECIAL EDUCATION CREDENTIAL FROM THE EDUCATION FOR INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS PROGRAM PROVIDED BY THE SEC THROUGH THE EDUCATION PREPARATION PROGRAMS. AS A TEACHER OF SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION AT THE SEVEN TREES EDUCATIONAL CENTER.

MARICELA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING AND WRITING INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PLANS AND MAINTAINING A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH SELF-HELP ACTIVITIES AND INDEPENDENCE ARE IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS.

I LIKE INTERACTING WITH THE KIDS EVERY DAY.

I LIKE THE CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THEM.

I THINK THAT'S WHAT MADE ME DO TEACHING, SAID ORNELAS.

HER SUPERVISOR, CAROLINA YURIYA, PRINCIPAL OF SEVEN TREES CLUSTER, DESCRIBED MARICELA AS AN EXPERIENCED TEACHER.

ON HER FIRST DAY IN THE CLASSROOM, MARICELA IMMEDIATELY TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE CLASS AND DISPLAYED AN EAGERNESS TO LEARN AS MUCH AS SHE COULD.

SHE WAS ALWAYS QUICK TO APPLY WHAT SHE LEARNED.

IF ONE OF HER STUDENTS HAD BEHAVIOR ISSUES, SHE IMMEDIATELY TOOK STEPS TO CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT TO FACILITATE THEIR SUCCESS, SAID YURIA.

MARISELA'S PASSION AND DEDICATION FOR HER STUDENTS HAS NOT GONE UNNOTICED.

SHE LEANS INTO HER TWO TOP STRENGTHS HARMONY AND ARRANGER, TO GO THE EXTRA MILE FOR HER STUDENTS.

SHE GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ASSIST THOSE WHO MAY NEED HELP.

SHE IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO SPEAK WITH AND TO HELP SOLVE PROBLEMS. SHE STRIVES TO MEET THE DIFFERENT NEEDS OF ALL HER STUDENTS AND CREATE A FUN AND ENGAGING CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT, SAID SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR MARIA ELENA GUTIERREZ.

IT IS WITH GRATITUDE THAT WE CONGRATULATE MARICELA ON BEING RECOGNIZED AS NOVEMBER'S EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH.

WHAT STANDS OUT ABOUT MARICELA IS THAT SHE HAS STRENGTHS IN ALL AREAS OF TEACHING.

SHE KNOWS HER STUDENTS WELL AND IS ABLE TO ASSIST THEM IN IMPROVING THEIR BEHAVIOR.

SHE LOVES AND ACCEPTS THEM AND BECAUSE OF THIS, THEY KNOW THIS.

SHE'S ABLE TO RAISE THE BAR ON WHAT HER STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ACCOMPLISH.

MARICELA ALSO UNDERSTANDS ACADEMICS AND KNOWS HER STUDENTS STRENGTHS.

SHE PLANS TO INSTRUCTION TO TAKE HIM TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

THEY ACHIEVE IT BECAUSE SHE EXPECTS IT.

MARICELA HAS A SIXTH SENSE WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING WHAT HER STUDENTS NEED EACH DAY EMOTIONALLY, SOCIALLY, AND ACADEMICALLY.

MARICELA IS FULL OF CREATIVE IDEAS AND FOLLOWS THROUGH WITH IMPLEMENTING THEM.

AND ONE OTHER THING I REALLY LOVE ABOUT YOU IS YOU'LL SAY TO ME, CATALINA, I NEED A CHALLENGE.

EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING IS WORKING WELL, SHE'LL THINK OF A WAY TO MAKE HER CLASSROOM BETTER, AND SHE'LL COME IN OVER THE WEEKEND AND JUST REARRANGE EVERYTHING.

YEAH, WE ARE VERY BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH A GIFTED TEACHER WHO MAKES SERVING OUR STUDENTS HER FIRST PRIORITY.

MY NAME IS MARICELA ORNELAS.

I'M AN ELEMENTARY TEACHER AT SEVEN TREES.

SO FIRST OF ALL, I WANT TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO EVERYONE WHO NOMINATED ME FOR THIS RECOGNITION.

IT'S TRULY AN HONOR.

SPECIAL EDUCATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN CLOSE TO MY HEART, INSPIRED BY BOTH MY REBECCA ALARCON AND MY MOTHER.

THEY THEY'VE DEDICATED THEIR CAREERS TO THE FIELD OF SPECIAL EDUCATION.

AFTER THE PANDEMIC REVEALED THE GROWING NEED FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.

I DECIDED TO PURSUE THIS PATH MYSELF.

I DECIDED MY EXPERIENCE WITH AS A SWIM INSTRUCTOR, BOTH IN A BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONIST.

YOU KNOW, IT FUELED MY PASSION THAT I HAD WORKING WITH STUDENTS OR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

WHEN I JOINED SEVEN TREES, I WAS CONFIDENT MY BACKGROUND AND BEHAVIOR WOULD BE A VALUABLE ASSET TO THE CLASSROOM.

FROM DAY ONE, I KNEW I WAS IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

ONE OF THE GREATEST GIFTS OF WORKING AT SEVEN TREES HAS BEEN MEETING AND COLLABORATING WITH MY TEAM MARIA, ELENA, ANGELA, KIM, ELKE AND JASMINE.

TOGETHER, WE'VE CULTIVATED A WARM AND SUPPORTIVE, INVITING CULTURE THAT MAKES COMING TO WORK EVERY DAY ENJOYABLE.

I AM PROUD OF THE TEAM WE'VE BUILT TOGETHER.

IT'S TRULY A JOY TO WORK WITH THEM EVERY DAY, AND I HAVE TO SAY, THE RECOGNITION FEELS LIKE A TEAM WIN BECAUSE WITH THEM MY JOB WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR. FOR ME PERSONALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THESE ARE ONE OF OR ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING ASPECTS OF MY JOB IS WORKING WITH STUDENTS WHO FACE THE MOST CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS. STUDENTS WHO MAY STRUGGLE TO COMMUNICATE OR ACT OUT IN WAYS THAT MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO BE A PART OF A TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM.

TO SOME, THEY MIGHT SEEM TOO DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH, BUT TO ME, I LOVE THAT.

I LOVE THAT CHALLENGE.

AND THROUGH CONSISTENT BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION, SUPPORT AND CREATING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT, I'VE SEEN THESE CHILDREN WHO'VE ONCE EXPRESSED EXPRESS FRUSTRATION PHYSICALLY OR HAD SOME DIFFICULTY ENGAGING.

NOW THEY'RE FOLLOWING LESSON PLANS, PARTICIPATING, AND EVEN BEGINNING TO READ.

IT'S INCREDIBLE TO WITNESS THEIR GROWTH, AS IT'S A TESTAMENT TO HOW POWERFUL THE RIGHT APPROACH CAN BE.

MY BACKGROUND ALWAYS ALLOWS ME TO ADAPT CURRICULUM HELP THESE CHILDREN INTEGRATE INTO A CLASSROOM, GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO BE A PART OF A COMMUNITY.

THEY MAY NOT ALWAYS HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO BE A PART OF.

IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY, BUT EVERY BIT OF PROGRESS, EVERY MOMENT OF ENGAGEMENT IS A REMINDER OF WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO.

LOOKING AHEAD, I'M EXCITED TO CONTINUE HELPING MY STUDENTS TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL.

THE BEST PART OF MY JOB IS WATCHING THEM GROW, THRIVE, AND SURPRISE THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES WITH WHAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF.

EVERY DAY BRINGS NEW CHALLENGES THAT KEEP ME ENGAGED.

REMIND ME OF WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO.

I'M INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL TO MY TEAM, COLLEAGUES, AND EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS RECOGNITION POSSIBLE.

THE STUDENTS ARE OUR COMMUNITY.

SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN BUSY.

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WAS COLLEGE MONTH.

ON OCTOBER 22ND, OUR ACADEMIC COUNSELORS HELD A COLLEGE DAY AT SOUTH COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOL.

STUDENTS FROM SOUTH COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AND SONORA COMMUNITY SCHOOL PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT, AND WERE ABLE TO MEET WITH DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE COLLEGES AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT PROGRAMS OFFERED.

BOTH COMMUNITY SCHOOLS ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE PRO CON ATHLETIC LEAGUE AND THEY KICK OFF THEIR FLAG FOOTBALL SEASON.

GAMES ARE TUESDAY MORNINGS AND MORGAN HILL AND THURSDAY MORNINGS AND SAN JOSE.

AS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL, THEY HELD MOCK ELECTIONS INFORM STUDENTS ON HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE.

THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THIS SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF AND SEEING THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR COUNTRY.

ALSO. I ALSO KNOW STUDENTS BUILD PUMPKIN LAUNCHING CATAPULTS AS PART OF A SCIENCE, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART AND MATH THEMED PROJECT.

THEY WERE ABLE TO LAUNCH SMALL PUMPKINS INTO TARGETS ON THE FIELD.

ON OCTOBER 24TH, I ATTENDED THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER SYMPOSIUM IN ALAMEDA COUNTY.

THIS CONFERENCE FOCUS WAS TO BRING STUDENTS WHO REPRESENT THEIR COUNTY SCHOOL BOARDS OF EDUCATION ACROSS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TOGETHER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WE HELD DISCUSSIONS ABOUT EDUCATION POLICY, CHALLENGES OF BEING A STUDENT BOARD MEMBER, STUDENT RIGHTS, PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS, AND HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR AUDIENCE.

MY BIGGEST TAKEAWAY WAS GETTING TO MEET AND COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS AROUND CALIFORNIA.

I HOPE I CAN BRING NEW IDEAS TO THE TABLE AFTER ATTENDING THIS CONFERENCE.

OVERALL, THIS EXPERIENCE WAS REALLY INSPIRING AND INFLUENCED ME TO MAKE CHANGES IN MY COMMUNITY AND COME TOGETHER AS A TEAM WITH OTHER STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS.

ON MONDAY, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET DOCTOR HINMAN, AND WE TALKED ABOUT MY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

MEETING HIM WAS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE IT MADE ME FEEL HEARD AND APPRECIATED IN MY ROLE AS A STUDENT BOARD MEMBER.

SCC, RSP AND ROCKETSHIP EDUCATION, DOING BUSINESS AS ROCKETSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOL, OR RSP, ENTERED INTO A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING IN 2017, WHICH REMAINS IN EFFECT DURING ANY CHARTER, RENEWAL OR APPEAL UNTIL A NEW AGREEMENT IS REACHED.

THE CHARTER SCHOOLS DEPARTMENT HAS PROVIDED RSSP AN UPDATED MOU TO ALIGN WITH THE CURRENT LAWS AND PRACTICES.

RSP HAS EXPRESSED ITS INTENT TO ENTER INTO AN UPDATED MOU, AND IF THE SECBOE RENEWS THE CHARTER, SCCOE WILL CONTINUE TO WORK WITH RSSP ON FINALIZING THE NEW MOU.

RSSP WAS NEITHER DEEMED A HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOL, WITH SCHOOL WIDE ACHIEVEMENT IN THE TWO HIGHEST PERFORMANCE LEVELS ON THE DASHBOARD OR SCHOOL WIDE AND MAJORITY SUBGROUP ACHIEVEMENT HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE ON ALL ACADEMIC INDICATORS ON THE DASHBOARD.

THE RENEWAL PETITION REQUEST COUNTY BOARD APPROVAL OF ADDITIONAL ADMISSION CRITERIA OR ADMISSION PREFERENCES IN CASES IN WHICH THERE ARE MORE APPLICANTS THAN SPACES AT A PARTICULAR GRADE LEVEL.

RSSP IS SEEKING APPROVAL OF THE FOLLOWING PREFERENCES IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER.

SIBLINGS NUMBER ONE SIBLINGS OF STUDENTS CURRENTLY ADMITTED TO OR ATTENDING RSSP.

NUMBER TWO. CHILDREN OF EMPLOYEES OF RSSP NOT TO EXCEED 10% TOTAL ENROLLMENT, NUMBER THREE STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS. NUMBER FOUR RESIDENTS OF THE ALUM ROCK UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

NUMBER FIVE OTHER CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS.

THE REQUESTED CHANGES ARE TO ADD THE PREFERENCE FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR FREE AND REDUCED MEALS, AND TO ADD A PREFERENCE FOR SIBLINGS OF STUDENTS WHO ARE ADMITTED TO RSP IN ADDITION TO SIBLINGS OF STUDENTS WITH WHO ALREADY ATTEND RSP, THE NEW PREFERENCE FOR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR THE FREE AND REDUCED MEALS PROGRAM INCREASES ENROLLMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED STUDENTS AND STAFF RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THIS PREFERENCE.

STAFF RECOGNIZES THE BENEFIT OF ALLOWING FAMILIES TO ENROLL ALL THEIR CHILDREN AT THE SAME SCHOOL, SO RECOMMENDS THAT THE SCC BOE APPROVE THE ADDITION OF THE PREFERENCE FOR SIBLINGS OF STUDENTS WHO ARE ADMITTED TO RSP.

RSP RENEWAL PETITION INCLUDES A REVISION REMOVING THE TEACHING CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL POSITIONS.

THE PROPOSED ELIMINATION OF THIS SIGNIFICANT PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION FOR THE POSITIONS OF PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CONSTITUTES A REQUEST FOR A MATERIAL REVISION TO THE CHARTER. AS EMPLOYEE QUALIFICATIONS ARE REQUIRED, CHARTER ARE A REQUIRED CHARTER ELEMENT AND THIS PROPOSED CHANGE HAS POTENTIALLY SUBSTANTIAL, HAS A POTENTIALLY SUBSTANTIAL EFFECT ON THE QUALITY OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND TEACHING AT RSSP, IMPACTING THE OVERALL SOUNDNESS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROGRAM.

THE SCCBOE MAY ACT ON THE MATERIAL REVISION REQUEST SEPARATELY FROM ITS ACTION ON THE REQUEST FOR RENEWAL.

WE NOTE THAT ROCKETSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOL EXPLAINED IN CORRESPONDENCE AND CORRESPONDENCE TO THE COUNTY BOARD ON FRIDAY, MAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST THAT IT AGREES THAT THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL POSITIONS MUST BE HELD BY AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A TEACHING CREDENTIAL.

AFFIRM THAT THAT ALL ROCKETSHIP PRINCIPALS AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS HAVE SUCH CREDENTIALS, AND INDICATED THAT IT DOES NOT NEED TO PURSUE A MATERIAL REVISION ON THIS POINT.

AS SUCH, RSSP POSITION APPEARS TO BE CONSISTENT WITH STAFF'S RECOMMENDATION.

RECOMMENDATION THAT THE SCC BOE DENY THESE MATERIAL REVISIONS TO THE RSP CHARTER AND MAINTAIN THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT OF A VALID TEACHING CREDENTIAL FOR THE POSITIONS OF PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL.

STAFF RECOMMENDS THAT THE RSSP CHARTER BE RENEWED, WITH THE CONDITION THAT RSSP AND ROCKETSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOLS ENTER INTO AN MOU AND OR AN ADDENDUM TO AN MOU ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 31ST, 2025 THAT ADDRESSES EACH OF STAFF'S CONCERNS AND RECOMMENDED CONDITIONS IDENTIFIED IN THE STAFF ANALYSIS.

AS NOTED, STAFF ALSO RECOMMENDS THAT SCCBOE DENY THE MATERIAL REVISIONS TO THE RENEWAL PETITION TO REMOVE THE TEACHING CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE PRINCIPAL AND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL POSITIONS.

PREVIOUSLY, YOUR FORMER CO-FOUNDER USED TO SAY THE MARKETPLACE WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF BECAUSE I ALWAYS THOUGHT ROCKETSHIP SHOULD BE PRE-K THROUGH GRADE EIGHT.

AND AT THE SAME TIME, THE WAY THAT WE SEE CHANGE HAPPEN IS THROUGH THE FAMILIES THAT YOU SEE IN THIS ROOM WHO HAVE COME HERE TODAY.

AND THE WAY THAT ACROSS THEIR TIME WITH US AND OUR ENGAGEMENT TOGETHER AND OUR PARTNERSHIP AND THEIR LEADERSHIP, THEY CONTINUE TO GROW THEIR IMPACT BEYOND THEIR TIME AT ROCKETSHIP. SO I'M PROUD TO SAY, AND JANINE CAN PROBABLY SPEAK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT THE NUMBERS LOOK LIKE THAT OVER THE COURSE OF OUR EXISTENCE AS A ROCKET SHIP NETWORK IN SAN JOSE. WE'VE SEEN THE NUMBER OF HIGH QUALITY MIDDLE SCHOOL SEATS OPEN ACROSS SPACES, AND REALLY PROUD TODAY THAT WE'RE JOINED BY A NUMBER OF ALUMNI WHO'VE JOINED OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND HAVE GONE ON TO A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO CONTINUE ON WITH THEIR EDUCATIONAL CAREER.

AND JUST BECAUSE YOU MENTIONED LONGITUDINAL STUDIES IT MIGHT SAY A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE, THE CREDO STUDY, AND WE SHARED A LITTLE BIT OF INFORMATION ABOUT IT BEFORE, BUT PRETTY INTO IT BECAUSE IT ESSENTIALLY IT STUDIED SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR A NUMBER OF, OF YEARS. AND I THINK THE TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT HAD ACTUALLY CONSIDERED IN THE STUDY WAS AROUND THREE, AROUND A TOTAL OF 3 MILLION STUDENTS FROM ACROSS 29 STATES.

AND AS A PART OF THAT, THEY LOOKED AT THE TIME FRAME FROM MULTIPLE YEARS FROM 2014 TO 2019.

AND WHAT THEY FOUND WAS THEY IDENTIFIED AS PART OF THAT STUDY, GAP BUSTING SCHOOLS.

AND THOSE WERE SCHOOLS THAT WERE DELIVERING SUPERIOR ACADEMIC RESULTS FOR STUDENTS.

SO ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE WERE MOST PROUD OF, AND RESULTS THAT WE SAW FROM THAT CREDO STUDY, IS THAT IT IDENTIFIED ROCKETSHIP AS ONE OF THOSE GAP BUSTING SCHOOLS, BECAUSE THE EDUCATORS AND THE FAMILIES THAT YOU SEE HERE TODAY AND THE RESULTS THAT WE WERE DELIVERING FOR FAMILIES.

IT WAS A QUICK FOLLOW UP.

THERE WAS ONE TIME WHERE NOT TOO LONG AGO, IT SEEMED LIKE THAT YOU WERE LOSING YOUR FIFTH GRADERS OR FIFTH GRADERS WEREN'T GOING ON TO ROCKETSHIP SCHOOLS.

THEY WERE MOVING INTO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

CHARTER SCHOOLS THAT STARTED WITH FIFTH GRADE.

HAS THAT CHANGED NOW? I'M HAPPY TO SPEAK TO THAT.

MORE SO THAN LOSING OUR FIFTH GRADERS.

WE REALLY BELIEVE IN MAKING ITS EMBEDDED IN CHOICE AND IT'S EMBEDDED IN WHAT IS THE BEST FOR OUR FAMILIES.

AND SO WE LEARNED THAT IF OUR FAMILIES LEFT OUR SCHOOLS IN FOURTH GRADE, EVEN WHEN THAT MEANS LOWER ENROLLMENT FOR US, THEY HAD A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING INTO THE SCHOOLS THAT THEY WANTED TO.

AND SO WITH THAT IN MIND, WE ACTUALLY START THE MIDDLE SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPO, AND WE DO THAT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALL SCHOOLS.

SO BOTH DISTRICT TRADITIONAL AND CHARTER SCHOOLS INVITING ALL THE SCHOOLS IN THE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.

AND WE HAVE A FAIR SO SCHOOLS CAN COME.

THEY PROMOTE THEIR SCHOOLS, PARENTS WILL ASK QUESTIONS.

THERE'S USUALLY A PANEL WITH PARENTS WHO'VE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAM, WHO MAY ALREADY BE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL OR ALREADY IN HIGH SCHOOL, TALKING ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE, BOTH LIKE TIPS AND TRICKS OF HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND BEYOND.

AND WE INVITE ALL OF OUR FOURTH GRADERS RISING FOURTH GRADERS INTO THAT SO THAT IF FAMILIES DECIDE, HEY, ACTUALLY, I WANT TO GO TO A DIFFERENT SCHOOL THAN FAMILIES LEAVE. SO YES, WE DO HAVE A HABIT OF HAVING A SMALLER COHORT IN OUR FIFTH GRADE CLASS BECAUSE WE ARE PROMOTING THE OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND IN THE COMMUNITY FOR OUR FAMILIES TO LEAVE.

BUT IT'S EMBEDDED IN THE BELIEF THAT WE HAVE THAT FAMILIES SHOULD CHOOSE WHERE THEY GO AND WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR THEM.

AND WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY AND HAPPY ARE HAPPY TO SHARE WITH THEM THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS AND CHOICES THAT EXIST IN THE COMMUNITY.

HOWEVER, I ENTRUST THAT IT'S A SYSTEM THAT WORKS THERE, BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT IT BECAUSE COMPETITIVE PAY, ESPECIALLY IN THE BAY AREA, IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY RETAINS TEACHERS, AND ESPECIALLY ONE THAT SERVES A LOT OF TITLE ONE STUDENTS.

AND SO I THINK THAT ANY WAY THAT WE CAN CONTINUALLY RETAIN TEACHERS AT AN EDUCATION INSTITUTION, ESPECIALLY AT SCHOOLS, IT ONLY IMPROVES THE WORKING CONDITIONS AND THE STUDENT LEARNING CONDITIONS.

SO I THINK THE MORE THAT WE CAN DO THAT WOULD BE JUST EVEN BETTER.

AND THERE I KNOW THERE'S TEACHERS IN THE AUDIENCE TODAY TOO, WHICH IS FANTASTIC.

AND SO I SEE THE COMMITMENT TO THE JOB.

BUT THAT WAS JUST ONE AREA THAT I, YOU KNOW, WAS SOMETHING THAT REALLY CAUGHT MY ATTENTION.

HOWEVER, IT DOESN'T FACTOR INTO THE RENEWAL.

SO BUT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT I DID WANT TO SHARE BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THERE IS A COLLABORATIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIP.

AND I DO ALSO WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I APPRECIATED THE UPDATE IN IN WHAT WE HAD HEARD ABOUT THE TEACHING CREDENTIAL FOR THE ADMINISTRATORS.

I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT THAT OUR ADMINISTRATORS AT OUR SCHOOLS HAVE TEACHING CREDENTIALS BECAUSE THEY'RE THE ONES EVALUATING THE TEACHERS, AND THERE'S SO MUCH THAT YOU LEARN AND AS AN EDUCATOR YOURSELF.

I THINK THAT IT SPEAKS WELL TO RETENTION, CERTAINLY OF SOME OF THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE FOR A LONG, LONG TIME AND JUST KIND OF THE NATURE OF SILICON VALLEY'S CREATIVE WAYS TO COMPENSATE.

I THINK THAT OUR CONCERN IS THAT EACH OF THE SCHOOLS USES THE SAME TEMPLATE SORT OF THE SAME PLAN FOR RECRUITMENT WITHOUT, IT APPEARS TO US, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE SPECIFIC CHALLENGES THAT MIGHT EXIST AT EACH SCHOOL IN TERMS OF RECRUITING THE FOLKS IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY, THAT THE PLAN LOOKS THE SAME AT EVERY SCHOOL.

AND WE DIDN'T SEE ANY DIFFERENTIATION FOR INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS.

I THINK WHEN WE RESPONDED, SAYING THAT IT WAS MORE INTENTIONAL IS THAT WE'RE GOING TO THE PLACES THAT WE KNOW ARE FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY THE FAMILIES THAT WE SEEK TO SERVE, ARE SPENDING TIME IN. SO WHETHER THAT'S THE GROCERY STORES ARE GOING TO WHETHER THAT'S PLACES LIKE SUPERHERO SUMMER FESTIVAL, LIKE JUST DIFFERENT PLACES THAT WE KNOW THAT THE FAMILIES THAT WE IN OUR MISSION AIM TO SERVE.

AND SO IT WAS MORE OF JUST WANTING TO SHED SOME LIGHT THAT WE ARE.

IT LOOKS SIMILAR ACROSS SCHOOLS AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE SCHOOLS IN THE SAME COMMUNITY, BUT STILL DEFINITELY TRYING TO BE RESPONSIVE TO DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES.

AND SO THAT'S, YOU KNOW, KIND OF THE LINGERING QUESTION FOR ME IS, YOU KNOW, GIVEN THOSE SMALL NUMBERS, DOES IT REALLY DEMONSTRATE ONE THAT THERE'S, YOU KNOW, THE TYPE OF ACCOMMODATING PROGRAM WHICH I GREATLY, AGAIN, APPRECIATE THE MESSAGING, THE INCLUSIVITY, THE CENTERING AROUND INTEGRATED SPECIAL EDUCATION.

A NEW COMMITTEE CALLED THE SUCCESS COMMITTEE, STANDING FOR SUPPORTING UNHOUSED STUDENTS THROUGH COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, EDUCATION AND SOLUTIONS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, HAS BEEN FORMED. THE COMMITTEE IS OPEN FOR MEMBERS TO JOIN AND HAS BEEN FORMED TO ADDRESS THE GROWING NEEDS OF UNHOUSED STUDENTS, WHO NUMBERED 6813.

AS OF 2022, 23 DISTRICTS REMAIN RESPONSIBLE FOR UNHOUSED SCHOOL ATTENDANCE, TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL, AND OUTCOMES WITH FEDERAL PROTECTION UNDER THE MCKINNEY-VENTO HOMELESS ASSISTANCE ACT.
